This week's photo comes from Kelly Burtenshaw, who took this pic on the 16km return walk to Cable Bay, four months after an operation. “Have been rather slow lately with our walking, but we are back!” she says.

🌼 Learn more about bamboozling buttercups 🌼

Ranunculus means ‘little frog’ in Latin, referring to a penchant for wet or boggy places.

There are over 40 native Ranunculus species gracing our favourite walking spots. However, the exact number of native buttercup species is no settled matter. The genus poses serious challenges to scientists and conservationists alike – both in Aotearoa and abroad.

Is tramping the ultimate sleep fix? 😴

There’s a certain romance to the idea of sleeping in the wilderness. But the reality is often less idyllic. Lumpy ground, noisy hut-mates or a midnight dash to the loo can leave you tossing and turning...

So why do some trampers swear by wilderness sleep as the ultimate reset while others stagger out bleary-eyed? And how do our circadian rhythms fit into the mix?

Sleep specialist Dr. Kate Sprecher explains the science behind sleeping in the wilderness and offers a few simple sleep strategies and key gear choices to make your next trip the best sleep of your life.

Do you guys get a good night sleep out in the hills?

🏡 Hut of the week

Built in December 2010, this hut is a serviced 20-bunk hut on Great Barrier Island.

The hut is known for jaw-dropping panoramas of the Hauraki Gulf, Little Barrier Island (Hauturu) and the summit peaks on Great Barrier Island. Thankfully, it has two deck areas to spread out and enjoy the views 🌅

Earlier this year, the Backcountry Trust and DOC completed exterior work to re-stain the hut

📰 Outdoor news of the week 📰

Kiwi Alyssa Olsen and her hiking partner, Mason Van Zeeland, ran into not one but two grizzly bears on a recent hiking trip in the USA.

Van Zeeland shared a video of the encounter on Instagram, and in the clip, Olsen can be heard saying, “We’re going to die. We’re actually gonna die. Holy heck!”

It’s 4am in Westport. Hundreds of people are milling in the dark. Surprisingly, a coffee shop is open. This is where the day begins for the Old Ghost Ultra, a one-day run over the 85km Old Ghost Road 🏃‍♀️

Runners came from around the world, but it’s the heart and soul of the Westport community that creates the magic of the event.

“The Ultra feels like a race stitched into both the landscape and the community,” says elite ultra mountain runner and proud West Coaster Ruth Croft.

“I’ve raced all over the world, but running the OGU brings me back to my roots. It’s not just about competing; it’s about being part of something that celebrates the terrain, the people and the spirit of the Coast.”

🧭 Skillcheck: Recognising and preventing hypothermia

Hypothermia occurs when a person’s body temperature drops. The person affected is often unaware before confusion sets in, which makes the situation worse. How do we prevent this, and what actions should be taken?

Photo of the week 📸

This week's photo comes from Jacek Pakulski, who won the ‘out there’ category and finished third overall in our 2026 Outdoor Photographer of the Year competition with this photo from the Milford Track.

The judges had the following comments about Jacek’s photo.

🌧️ Alistair Hall: There’s drama aplenty in this photo, which is why I was drawn to it. We’ve no doubt all been in similar foul weather and can appreciate the struggle! It really is ‘out there’.

🥶 Mark Watson: Muted tones and a bold diagonal structure emphasise the mood and moment of this photo. The track leads our eye through airborne snow to a figure whose outstretched arm and apparent tension convey the effort of tramping in bad weather.
