Road safety week some advice from Northland police

IT'S ROAD SAFETY WEEK!
Too many people are dying on our roads and we need everybody’s help to save lives.

Road Policing has four prevention priorities around driver behaviours that we know contribute to death and injury on our roads:
- Distracted driving
- Impaired driving
- Going too fast for the conditions
- Not wearing seatbelts.

Police in Northland kicked off Road Safety Week on Friday evening by deploying Police across the Whangarei and Kaipara region to keep our people safe on the roads.
Kristin Edge from the Northern Advocate came along with us and some of you may have seen her article linked here: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/northern-advocate/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503450&objectid=12046293

But remember, Police can’t be everywhere at once, or control the actions of every driver 24/7. We can’t be beside you in the car telling you to put your seatbelt on, or keep your eyes on the road. So please…..
• Put your belt on… and that of your children
Being properly restrained reduces your chance of death or serious injury in a crash by 60 percent in the front seat and 44 percent in the back seat. A third of drivers and passengers who die on our roads are not wearing seatbelts. If they had taken the two seconds it takes to put a belt on they may still be here with their families today.
• Put your phone away
Put your passengers and other road users first. Nobody wants to share the road with a driver who isn’t paying attention.
• Slow down
Less speed = less harm
• Stay sober

As Kristin says in her article we didn’t catch many drunk drivers on Friday but one is too many. Thank you for all your support and to all those who drive safely.

New cycle path proves popular - Northern Advocate - Northern Advocate News

The Onerahi/Riverside path, which provides off-road walking and cycling from Raumanga to Onerahi while linking with the Hatea Loop walkway, was officially opened yesterday. Where you there?

An Onerahi resident who has been cycling into Whangarei Central since 1997 says the route, which used to be like a desert, is now filled with cyclists thanks to a new, safer pathway - Northern Advocate
