Did you know we sell ostrich eggs at Hamilton Zoo? They are a constant source of wonder for many guests who spot them on display at reception and wonder if they are real (we promise you they are!)

Our ostrich girls lay eggs regularly each week and our savannah keepers scoop them up and deliver them to the front counter for a clean and then they are available for sale. The eggs cost $20 each with the money going into our zoo conservation fund. You have to get in quick though as they sell like hot cakes!

The eggs still contain their yolk (the equivalent of 20-24 chicken eggs!) and they can be used in a variety of ways. Zoo staff are experts in this so just ask our friendly Visitor Experience team for their advice, tips and tricks. Receptionist Suzanne likes to drill the ends of the eggs, blow the yolk out and then paint them (just like giant Easter eggs). Receptionist and Health and Safety Officer Alison, along with Education Team Leader Ken, both love to cook the eggs and have their own recipes that they swear by.

Christmas Hot Takes - With Jak & Bronwyn Highlights Part 1 This week Nexus did what all other student media was afraid to do. We searched “Christmas” into Netflix. With the plethora of Hallmark classics and evidence of why Vanessa Hudgens has such a chokehold on us, Hoata and Bron review some of the best Christmas soon-to-be classics. The Cockdown Cocktails -- Espresso Martini This week in l(c)ockdown, Nexus is making cocktails! Because you can't head to House or Mr. Pickles to grab the ever-cherished Espresso Martini, here's how you can simply make one at home! The recipe is simple as :) Ingredients: - Coffee shot (Any kind, doesn't matter) - 30ml Kahlúa - 30ml vodka - Ice Method - Add a single shot of espresso, or any kind of coffee really. F**k it, we're not bougie. - Pour the coffee into a shaker with ice. - Add 30ml of Vodka, about a shot. Or whatever. - Same deal with the Kahlúa. - Shake that sh*t up and pour into a glass. Bam, Espresso Martini is sorted whānau.
