Cape Kidnappers, Gannet Safaris Overland. What an amazing field trip at the HATA conference. Finishing off at the Te Mata Peak restaurant for the HATA BGM

INTERESTING FACTS:
1: The farm on Cape Kidnappers has an 11k predator fence.
2: The fence cost 1 Million dollars per km to build due to the cost of the chopper needed.
2: They estimate 300 plus kiwis now inhabit the area.
3: Gannets mate for life.
4: An adult gannet weighs about 2.5kgs but a gannet chick weighs double as it has to fly to Australia as a young bird, in one go, no stopovers and uses the stored fat and food for the journey.
5: Gannets can dive up to 70ft and on entering the water have inflating pockets of skin on their neck.
6: They also have a second eyelid that covers their eyes to protect them when they hit the water.
7: The Māori name for gannet is tākapu

Straight out of the box!
I'm like a kid opening a birthday present when I receive a print job.

I always get it sent to myself so I can quality control the colour, clarity and trimming.

And it's also a good idea to triple remind a client that what it looks like on screen ain't what it's gonna look like as a printed hard copy (such superb English!)

I use a CMYK pantone matching booklet which is usually spot on.

Colour inspo!

When designing a new website a good way to get the creative juices flowing is to just have a play! Kind of like a warm up before a run, I like to create a bit of a photoshop or Indesign collage, and mix and match potential colour palettes using the eye dropper tool and the images.

That's why it's also very handy, if not imperative to have all your photography sorted before you start.

In this case I'm also designing the logo and overall branding so I'll need to make note of the CMYK percentages and also check my pantone booklet to see what the colours actually look like in the flesh. Although digital printing does vary quite a bit from printer to

So here's a bit of background about me.

A few years ago now (cough splutter) I gained a degree at Waikato Polytechnic, in Media Arts, majoring in Graphics and my first real role as a designer was in-house brand and packaging designer for Nutra-life Health and Fitness in Auckland. A fantastic job, where I met some great people...one who ended up being my bridesmaid and the boardroom drinkies with our hilarious CEO on a Friday night were second to none!

A year later & somewhat reluctantly to leave a great job, I was off on my "Big OE" (with my now husband) and gained further experience working in the Uk for agency Pearl Fisher Advertising and as a brand designer/developer for fashion labels Hackett and Henri Lloyd. Again what a blast, working in a centuries old brick warehouse in the middle of old London! Such cool memories.

After travelling the globe four years later and a stint working as a chef on the super yachts, my next best and most awesome job yet was Graphic Designer for Independent Liquor New Zealand, (now Asahi Beverages ). A year later I was promoted to New Product Development Manager and Brand Manager for one of their most successful brands, Mudshake. Perhaps you remember it? 😉

This involved running a studio of Graphic Designers and overseeing production of all packaging and production requirements in a fast paced successful company that liked to fly by the seat of it's pants!

Those were the days when petrol and company entertainment cards were the norm and yes working for an alcohol company definitely had its perks. But the best part about that job was again the friends made and the people met. One which after leaving turned into a client for 14 years and the other ended up being god mother to my first born (such a talented gal!)

Reluctantly I had to leave - to raise a family, bless their little cotton socks 😂 as I was up the duff 😂 and this was when Catherine Bryant Design, my thriving little design studio was also born. I might just add that I worked up until 8 months pregnant, just saying!

And that's it in a nutshell basically 😂 Still highly passionate about design and forever learning and growing!

I'll let you in on a little secret, sometimes us designers have a slight freak out when their clients printing arrives from the courier lol.

It's because missed mistakes stand out like dogs balls when you see something in the actual flesh!! 😂 and another little secret is I'm not the best speller!

Fortunately these are looking awesome and I'm very happy with the nice black satin finish.

I often get my clients printing sent to myself so that I can fully check printing quality before passing it on. Just a little bit of the perfectionist coming out in me, and wanting to provide only the best to my clients.

An email signature is an important element of your marketing campaigns. It shows your brand personality, introduces the person behind emails, and provides necessary contact information.

Professional email signatures look best when they are kept simple and short. That's why you should try and limit your signature to 3 to 4 lines of text, mentioning only the essentials like full name, job title, and contact information.

Here's one I prepared earlier😆

When it comes to selecting colours for your logo, on trend colour palettes have come such a long way (thankfully) and tend to be much more edgy and sophisticated. The rule is...there's actually no rule these days and anything goes, as long as the design is awesome and it totally fits the brand.

Being very much an entrepreneurial modern farming couple, the Hancocks, were absolutely thrilled with their fresh new logo for their business.

Ok I admit it, I just used a beautiful tropical photo to drag you into my post, lol. Well it is related I promise 😂. The shot was taken by my client Steve (or one of his family members) at on Insta, who is the Life Coach from True North Life Coaching.

His brand new website, created by moi and on the websites platform has just recently gone live, and looks awesome!

Steve is currently sailing around the Fijian Lau islands with his family. There are 57 of these beautiful remote islands in the Eastern Archipelago of Fiji, and they look like the stuff dreams are made of! Sparsely populated, with unspoilt traditional Fijian villages and hardly any tourists - they sound like bliss!

Steve still has internet coverage and can be contacted via his website if you're interested in getting more out of life and reaching seemingly unattainable goals. This guy knows his stuff.

When building this brand it was imperative to my client that it was completely different to any similar industry branding and websites in the marketplace to avoid confusion. Here we played on the strong use of the black referencing the ultrasound as viewed on screen, with eye catching white and bright green.

Optimised for mobile, laptop and ipad on the Rocketspark platform, this is a very user friendly, and punchy website that will hold the attention of the viewer with well written and engaging flow of information.

Check it out here https://www.pocuseducation.co.nz/
Contact Jo via email if you're in need of expert ultrasound training or just to find out more.

One of the things I love about my job is meeting people that have very interesting professions. A recent branding job that I have personally learnt a lot from is for Jo McCann the founder of POCUS Education.

POCUS stands for Point of care Ultrasound and refers to the use of ultrasound at a patient's bedside for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.

Jo is a senior accredited medical sonographer and lecturer at Otago University and will now also be offering one on one teachings and workshops for medical professionals in their clinical practises.

Wouldn't this be handy for the patient if on seeing a specialist or doctor they could get their ultrasound done then and there?
We both love the strong contrasting colours and imagery which sets her apart from current similar industry branding.
A great looking website will soon be up and running too!

Email at [email protected] for more info

I love it when a client ventures outside the box when it comes to colour and doesn't follow the norm. This logo and branding will definitely stand out amongst the crowd and when I asked Ravinder from Oceanic Tech Services why he chose this particular logo design, he said it was because was bold, simplistic and most of all memorable.

Their branding package included all social medial profile files formatted for Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin.
Plus collateral such as business cards, letterhead template and email signature.

Oceanic Tech Services are based in Tauranga and offer: consulting & advice • application & mobile development • API development & integration & cloud solutions.

This was a great job to work on as I got to hear all bout Steve (my clients), amazing adventures, cruising around the world with his family, to the most exotic beautiful places on his 50 Ft yacht. He's off again in the next few days for another stint in Fiji to more beautiful remote Islands...and I am just a teeny bit jealous!! Back in December for good he tells me though.

One can only dream about a life like that...or with the right know how and drive, could this be your reality too?

Along with many other life adventures, skills, and experiences living abroad, Steve from True North Life Coaching, decided he would be pretty dam good at helping others achieve their life's dream as well.

This is where I also came in, providing the branding and website design for his new venture - he actually came to me for his website first, but soon discovered he really needed a s**t hot logo (not one of these cheapies off randoms off the internet), to establish a more professional looking brand. VERY IMPORTANT!

We developed a logo with a strong, masculine feel that conveys Steve's "no fluff" approach, giving clients, solid, practical advice and of course direction and an actual plan of attack.

Steve was stoked with his logo and we're currently working on a website, with Rocketspark which will be launched very soon. The beauty of the Rocketspark platform being that Steve can update and add to his website easily himself whilst aboard.

So watch this space for the website, however if you would like to contact Steve about his life coaching services you can message him on facebook Truenorth Life coaching or follow him on Insta handle and watch his new adventures unfold.

If you have a new venture like Steve's but need help in making it come to fruition visually then don't hesitate to call me for some free advice on 64 21 805 015 on how to get started and how I can help you.

So you have a great business or brand idea that needs a name! where do you start? Here are a few things to consider.

1. Short is sweet, don’t choose a name that is overly long. You are going to have to use it over and over. It needs to be
easy to type, easy to pronounce and easy to remember.

2. Suggest purpose, but don’t be too generic. Many strong brands allude to what their business does, but aren’t too obvious and therefore forgettable. For example, your customers might search for generic keywords, but they will remember a catchy name, e.g. if they search for “online payment solutions” - PAYPAL is a unique name that suggests the kind of service it provides.

3. Be creative, a good way to create a catchy, distinctive and memorable business name is to use alternative spelling of words related to the goods or service that you are offering. For example, LYFT (uber taxi) and ELECTRIFY (E-Bike company)

4. Don’t resemble your competitors, stay away from names that are so similar to other traders in your industry that consumers might get confused. You also want to make sure that it isn't trademarked already. Research the brands and business names already used in your industry. Here is a really good website that you can use to check if your name is available and what email addresses are available too:
https://www.business.govt.nz/onecheck

5. Choose a name that could grow with your brand. If there’s a possibility of future growth and you may be looking to expand your range of goods and services or geographic region, make sure that the name still works.

6. Think carefully about using your own name (he he I must consider this!) If you ever expand your business to another area or sell it, your name might not be suitable.

7. Consider the visual aspect of your name, does the configuration of the letters lend itself to a unique design and does the name easily conjure up visual imagery that you could use in the logo? (obviously this is where I come in as well)

Happy name hunting and here to help if you're struggling to find something suitable. Finding a brand name is all part of the service I offer in your full branding package.

It was such a pleasure to work with Julian White, Hamilton Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon on his brand new website and supporting collateral. Julian was wanting to communicate a new focus within his career, going from head of ENT department at the Waikato hospital to concentrating more on his private practice at 20 Peachgrove Road in Hamilton.

He wanted something that looked professional, modern, welcoming and not too flashy, which we have created through professional photography, use of colour, and clean design - a site to be very proud of!

This was a logo a did I wee while ago but it's one of my favourites, as everything just came together so nicely, the concept the colours, the font. Manawa means "heart" in Maori and had significant importance to my clients family heritage. My client loved the way the two korus form a heart shape, and also ties in with the agricultural & primary industries aspect of his business as well.

A beautiful logo and branding package for Pahi Coastal Walk Coromandel. The client who has lived and farmed the area for many years wanted a logo that timelessly reflected the iconic coastal and farming scenery.

We achieved this with a clean simple modern logo encompassing both the ocean and surrounding hills.

The logo is also very adaptable and can be used in multiple configurations, with or without the circle. The design package came complete with branding guidelines for any future advertising, whether that be on social or printed material.

Check out ARS Accomodation Rental Solutions newly upgraded website! It was great working with Nicole from A.R.S Accommodation Rental Solutions who came to me in need of not only a design upgrade but a vast improvement of the functionality of their existing site, especially with the properties listings. We all think it looks so much more professional and inviting, everything is working once again and it has been made very easy for the ARS staff to just go in and enter new rental listings etc. They are based in Cambridge and are a very friendly team. Pop in and see them if you have any rental management requirements or are looking yourself for a property to rent. https://arspropertymanagement.com/
