Welcome to weekly staff picks, where each week a Flying Nun staff member hand-picks a bunch of albums they currently adore.

After digging through the deep dark crates of our Flying Nun Auckland store, manager Carla surfaced with some solid vinyl gold. From cult classic Music from Twin Peaks by Angelo Badalamenti to Great Doubt by Danish composer and Viola player Astrid Sonne. There’s even some lush ambient marimba and electronics by Masayoshi Fujita with Bird Ambience for good measure, AND MORE. We know you’ll love it.

A book that now sits happily on our shelves, A Record Could Be Your Whole World is a love poem to vinyl. The new book by New Zealand sound improvisor BRUCE RUSSELL and graphic designer and musician LUKE WOOD highlights the beauty and importance of records. Trust me boys, we get you.

"This book tries to cast light on the unique role played by records in western culture in the late twentieth century. Records deeply penetrated everyday life and encompassed entire worldviews through their combination of sound, design and modern mythology. In this book a diverse group of people reflect on their relationship to a specific vinyl record, and in the process reflect the diversity of human connections, needs and aspirations that records can represent."

A Record Could Be Your Whole World: Vinyl Records as the Total Artwork of the Late Twentieth Century, by Bruce Russell & Luke Wood (editors) is a book about records considered ‘in themselves’. Buy the book from Flying Nun Records and get free shipping on orders over $80 in New Zealand.

-2 formed from the remnants of Christchurch band The Terminals after Peter Stapleton and Brian Crook relocated south to Pūrākanui and Port Chalmers in the mid-1990s. The distance between band members created more sporadic gatherings of the Terminals from this point on however Stephen Cogle, Mick Elborado and John Chrisstoffels continued to rehearse and performed a handful of live gigs as a three piece in Christchurch. They never ventured out of the city. It’s a dark, moody sound, like the Terminals unplugged, combining John’s droning cello, Mick’s swirling keyboards and the paired back guitar riffs and leads by Stephen. All of this is overlaid by Mr Cogle with one of the most unique and beautifully rendered vocal styles you’ll ever hear in New Zealand’s alternative music scene. Originally recorded in 2002 or 2003, we’re actually not sure when exactly, and released as a limited edition CD in 2009 The Joy of Return is now available as an LP for the first time. The Joy of Return features 10 songs including versions of the classic Cogle / Stapleton tracks Touch and Crocus along with several other songs that never made it onto the Terminal’s set list. Also included are stunning covers of Builders Alien and Dadamah’s High Tension House. It’s a Christchurch vibe, with covers hand-screenprinted in Lyttelton! Edition of 250.
