It was an honour for KRP to attend the premiere of Ka Whawhai Tonu in Kirikiriroa and to complement the film’s storyline by promoting the award winning te reo Māori account of Tūhoe at the battle of Ōrākau - Te Rautakitahi o Tūhoe ki Ōrākau - written by Tā Pou Temara.

KRP was honoured to host Daniel Hahn, an English writer and translator of some 100 books who was invited to speak at Waituhi o Tāmaki, Auckland Writers Festival 2024. Daniel travelled with Mike, our KRP Raumutu, to Rotorua to meet with Te Haumihiata Mason and to share experiences of translating literary works. Daniel is currently writing about international translations of Shakespeare and was keen to learn about Te Haumihiata and her grand-daughter’s research journey and approach to translating Rōmeo rāua ko Hurieta.

In his book Catching Fire A translation Diary, Daniel explains -

Translation is the sum of its choices, choices that are more or less persuasive, more or less justifiable, but always subjective. Because translators are individual, interpretive readers and individual creative writers… Is the work’s re-expression really the same things as its source? No, nor could it ever be. Like I said: sleight of hand. What it is, is a new piece of writing, seeking to create the same effect as the original but using entirely different tools. And the way this works (this strange fidelity we talk about so much) is another neat little paradox: to keep it just the same, we need to change all of it.

Tā Tīmoti Kāretu muses on the art of translation in his foreword to Rōmeo rāua ko Hurieta -

When I first looked over the translation, I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself at the authentically Māori turn of phrase, expressions echoing the native speakers who raised her, language regurgitated from the utterances of her parents and relatives, the breadth of speech learnt while seated at her grandparents’ feet. The community in which Te Haumihiata grew up strengthened her knowledge, as this was the language spoken day in and day out. Indeed she was of the lucky generation.

The Māori world is the stage of this play. The world of Romeo and his lover Juliet is brought to life through distinctive idioms (kīwaha), proverbial sayings (whakataukī), simile (kupu whakarite) and metaphor (huahuatau). With her understanding of the Māori language, Te Haumihiata is able to play with sentence structures so they suit the context or accentuate the speaker’s thoughts.
