Rātana the Prophet republished

Due to strong demand a now rare book chronicling the life and times of prophet, healer and visionary Tahupōtiki Wiremu Rātana is being re-released in May 2024.

Rātana the Prophet was first published by Raupo (Reed/Penguin) in 2009 but within a decade was sold out, and was only available in libraries and fetching high prices on the second hand book market.

The book is distilled from the much larger Rātana Revisited: An unfinished legacy by Keith Newman first published by Reed in 2006 which is also out of print and mostly only available in the heritage section of libraries.

Peter Dowling, who commissioned the original book for Reed and now head of Oratia Books, arranged with the author for an updated version of Rātana the Prophet. The reprint contains corrections and minor revisions that take the unfolding story up to the early days of 2024.

Rātana the Prophet is a comprehensive book on the life of T.W Rātana, the movement he founded, his healing ministry, world tours and efforts to restore Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) as the founding document of Aotearoa-New Zealand and efforts to have it honoured and included in the statutes and lawbooks of the nation.

Rātana not only carried the message of numerous Māori prophets before him but made astounding prophecies of his own between the two world wars including the restoring of Māori mana when the treaty was on everyone’s lips.

The release of this updated book is a timely reminder of the painful past, efforts to remedy the broken promises of the treaty and a hope filled story of perseverance, faith and a vision and model for reconciliation and restoration.

Keith Newman will officially launch the book to the Rātana community, share aspects of how the book came about and why he believes the Rātana story is so significant in the current political, social and spiritual climate.
