Saving her daughter and building a new life
Valeriya Horyayeva has experienced first-hand the horror of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Early in 2022 life was going well for the married mother-of-one. Valeriya had her own social marketing company and business was good. Everything changed when the Russians attacked.
Separated from her husband, Sergii, who was in another part of the country on a skiing holiday, Valeriya had to get their daughter, Tereza, to safety.
Episode 10 of The Nelson Pod
After spending days sheltering in the corridor of their apartment building – the idea being that, if a shell hit the building, the first two layers of walls would offer some protection – Valeriya, Tereza and Valeriya’s grandmother made a run for it.
During their desperate dash to Poland, where Valeriya’s sister lived, they heard the planes and the bombs, and they ran from gunfire. Valeriya made a point of carrying Tereza on her front in case she got shot in the back. At one point, Valeriya wrote her sister’s name and phone number in the crook of Tereza’s elbow in the hope that, if she was killed, Tereza might still be reunited with her aunt.
After a nerve-wracking trip, Valeriya and Tereza made it to Nelson where Valeriya’s mother and her stepfather live.
She talks to Matt about their ordeal, the war’s impact on her family and friends at home, the threat of Russian disinformation and her great affection for Nelson and New Zealand.
