We rebranded in May and it was the best thing we've ever done. ✨

A rebrand can be beneficial if you think that you or your audience no longer resonates with your positioning or branding. For us, our old brand fit both of that criteria.

A rebrand in our eyes is like a radical new haircut, it may help the outside world perceive you differently but only you can decide if you're now a long lost child of the 90's in need of frosted tips to bring out the Justin Timberlake hiding inside.

I've been thinking a lot recently about the place of 'going viral' on social media.

After running many social media accounts that have had a viral vid hit the millions, I'm not convinced it's all that it is hyped up to be.

Especially when you realise those 5 million randos don't all buy straight away...

Let me explain: going viral on social media might help you grow an audience, sell out a product or catalyse an important aspect of your business. All important things, but here's the catch.

Going social media viral won't mean you'll be remembered next week, it won't build any sort of community around your brand, it won't give you life long customers AND it's hard to predict when it'll happen next.

So what does that mean if you manage a social media account? Should you just give up because the ultimate prize of virality is worthless?

No, that's a bit dramatic.

Instead of treating 'going viral' as the end goal, use it to learn about:
- how different audiences engage with your brand
- what content draws a crowd vs sells
- creating better content
- the process of converting strangers into followers

The reality is 5 million randos seeing your brand isn't going to make your social media an immediate success. It's what you do with those views.

I know you've heard the marketing clichĂŠ: people don't buy products, they buy from other people. If you know this is true, why don't you do it in your social media marketing?

When our long time friends at PAK'nSAVE Mill Street needed to get their newest cake decorator busy with custom orders, we knew what we needed to do.

Normally, when you want to tell people about a new product or service in your business you take some nice photos of it, tell people how awesome it is and then plaster this all over the internet. You even spend some money making it into an ad because you find, no-one gives a s**t about a product feature list and no-one organically sees it.

So instead of telling everyone we offer fondant icing options, offer chocolate, vanilla and red velvet blah blah blah... we celebrated the person making the cakes.
Nothing fancy, new or inventive.

We didn't set her on fire to get attention or pull a stunt. We just gave the digital community an opportunity to welcome her into her new role and show her off.

Within 3 days over 30,000 people had seen Angela, our DMs were full with cake orders and we didn't spend a cent on paid ads.

Did you know TikTok cares about your location?

I’m sure you’ve heard ‘I’m not marketing on TikTok because no one in New Zealand will see my product’ and it’s just not true.

This account analytics screenshot is our agency TikTok account that we’ve recently started posting to.

After two videos hitting over 80,000 views in the past 7 days, our audience analytics are shaping up nicely. These analytics are showing us that in the last 7 days we’ve had 250,000 views and 83% of these views are from kiwis.

That’s right, 83% of our audience views are from New Zealand.

Does anyone even get that kind of results from organic Instagram reach?

You need the person sitting across from you to say, "actually yeah, I'm confident this will sell in our store, let's do it".

But how do you get your lovely buyer to say yes? Is it how crazy unique your idea is or how mutual connections you have? Well maybe, but it could also be; how many eyes you can guarantee will see your product before they walk through the store's doors, and how many people in the buyers area have seen this product before and are desperately looking for a stockist near them.

How could you guarantee to the buyer that 10,000 people are only a 5 minute drive from their store and eager to try something new on their weekly shop?
