Andrew Fawcett lives in the Wairarapa. He began his artistic career in the UK and his Zoology degree inspired his first pictures, which were intricate pen and ink portrayals of European birdlife. Living in the creative city of Whanganui for 17 years, Andrew worked with prominent artists including Sheila Pearson and Tina Drayton who inspired him to produce stunning interpretations of New Zealand la

ndscapes using oils and acrylics. More recently he has explored digital photography and this is the basis for his latest work where iconic Wairarapa images have been magically portrayed. Andrew’s work can be seen on his website www.capturedjust4you.com. Enquiries and commissions are welcomed.

Check out my second creation for my ‘Beyond Reality’ collection – Cathedral Cove in all its glory! I hope you agree that this style perfectly captures a classic image in a unique way. Also magical was the fact that I could finally walk on the golden sand of Cathedral Cove again. For the first time in nearly two years following Cyclone Gabrielle, beach landings were possible again. With the walking track still closed I treasured being there in virtual isolation. Buy this original piece to savour this feeling with me.

Exciting times – this is the first of my brand new ‘Beyond Reality’ collection of photography art. Where bold shapes meet a pastoral palette. It was an early start to capture the sunrise over Te Mata Peak in the Hawkes Bay and I hope you’ll agree that I’ve captured the drama of a Hawkes Bay dawn in its essentials of form and colour.
Watch this space for further interpretations of NZ landscapes in this contemporary style.

Pauanui in the Coromandel, NZ, has been a recent discovery of mine – it delivers idyllic seclusion, and photographic opportunities by the million! Walking the golden sand of Pauanui beach with the tide receding, I noticed a regular mirror-like surface appear before the ebbing waters disappeared into the sand ready for the next wave. A reflection shot I thought, but the view ahead was not delivering. Imagine my excitement when I looked back and saw the patchy late afternoon clouds appearing above Tairua Heads reflected on the beach. Just couldn’t resist!

Check out my very first ‘on trend’ canvas featuring a Highland Cow – I’m offering a 25% discount for a limited time only: https://wildscapesphotoart.etsy.com This is my first foray into highland cattle studies – please comment below if you think the danger was worth it!

Here’s my story: “I have to admit to having a bit of a soft spot for Highland Cattle. I’m not sure why. Perhaps it’s that unruly hairdo that speaks of having a laissez-faire approach to life, or perhaps it’s those horns that say, 'Don’t mess with me', or perhaps it’s a mix of the two. When I had the luck to care for three of these stunning creatures while house-sitting, I could indulge in some spine-tingling photography sessions. Unlike normal cattle, they are ridiculously inquisitive and not frightened of much. At one point this particular character was within 6 inches of the camera lens and her horns seemed pretty ferocious at that proximity! This is my first foray into highland cattle studies – please let me know if you think the danger was worth it!”

Te Mata peak was emerging from the early morning mist above the Tukituki Valley and things looked ephemeral but promising as I concentrated on the view I could see through my camera lens one foggy winter’s morning. Bands of landscape kept appearing and disappearing and all was eerilu silent. But eventually the foreground came into sharp focus emphasizing the gradual fade of banded hillsides. With the photographers’ mantra of “You have to be in it to win it” ringing in my ears I had dragged myself from slumber to capture the evocative scene. And it had been well worth it!

Te Mata peak was emerging from the early morning mist above the Tukituki Valley and things looked promising as I concentrated on the view I could see through my camera lens one foggy morning in April. Bands of landscape kept appearing and disappearing, but eventually the foreground came into sharp focus emphasizing the gradual fade of banded hillsides. With the photographers’ mantra of “You have to be in it to win it” ringing in my ears I had dragged myself from slumber to capture the Autumn. And it had been worth it!

Breeze is often the enemy of the photographer and so it was with my Glenorchy shoot on what had promised to be a picture-perfect day! Leaving Queenstown, Lake Wanaka looked as calm as it could be and I had high hopes for beautiful reflection shots of the landscape, so arriving at the car park, I was severely disappointed to see sizable ripples ruining any chance of capturing reflections of the towering mountains.

Not being one to give up I realised there was a walking trail around the surrounding wetlands that just might have enough of a screen to allow reflections to appear. Meandering along a tranquil pathway, with the poplar trees creating beautiful shadows, I could see the distant mountains but there was no open water to reflect the scene. That was until a little opening leading to a wooden bench by the water's edge attracted my attention and seemed to say, "You need to come here”. So I did and here is the result.

This magnificent place has to be seen to be believed! Pancake Rocks (Punakaiki) at the top of New Zealand’s South Island is up there with the Seven Wonders of the World. With its relatively unprepossessing entrance on the edge of a State Highway, and the long, winding entrance pathway through thick flax bushes, you get no clue of the majesty that is about to be revealed until you are at the edge of the coast. It is then that the truly breathtaking rock formations are suddenly directly in front of you. You feel transported to another world as you stare at the incredible layers of rock that stretch out towards the sea.

This was my second visit so although I knew what to expect, I still stood there open mouthed. With the brilliant sunshine (a rare event on the West Coast) harshly illuminating the jutting rock faces, I set to work trying to capture its majesty which was something of a challenge. What you see with the eye is often different to what the camera sees, and I started to get frustrated, unable to capture what I knew to be magnificent.

Although the sun was out and throwing good shadows which exaggerated the pancake-like formations, with the harsh light it took some time before I was happy that I can done these magnificent rocks justice.

After the dizzy delights of Wanaka, I was making my way across to the West Coast of New Zealand. The scenery was glorious, the sun was shining, and I was trying to drive while keeping one eye in the rear view mirror just in case the best views were behind me!

As I came up to ‘The Neck’ as it is called (the beautiful link road between Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea), I was checking in the mirror for the 65th time and saw the shot of my dreams. I quickly parked the car on a small patch of gravel on the side of the road, and almost fell out in my hurry to capture the sunny scene before the clouds came across the sky.

The sun was glinting on the leaves of three cabbage palms that were centre stage, with the backdrop of Lake Wanaka below and the mountains rising up almost vertically from the lake. What a dream shot!

Being in the right place at the right time is what generally makes a really great photo. That late summer evening in November there was brilliant sunshine as I hightailed it around the shores of Lake Matheson and I was very hopeful that 'tonight was the night'. However, when I got to my chosen spot to take what I hoped would be a perfect picture, there was also a breeze. Zero wind was needed for the perfect reflection in the lake’s surface.

Not being one to give up, the following morning I almost held my breath as I crept into the car park at 5:30am. I wasn’t too surprised to see several cars already there for the dawn which was enticingly breeze-free. As the sun rose over the mountains, it lit up the misty fog rolling across the surface of the lake, and a pin-sharp reflection of the snow-clad mountains made for this picture perfect shot.

I love being alone with nature, so it wasn’t onerous to sit and await nature’s light show at Bedgebury Pinetum in East Sussex. This is truly a lovely part of the world - the arboretum is always a spectacular place to find colour, especially on this particular day with the late afternoon sun casting its beautiful light across the colouring leaves. And big bonus – there was an opportunity for reflections as well, at a bridge across a magnificent stretch of water in the middle of the arboretum. The sky was slowly turning an incredible colour, but it was a slow affair, and the clock was ticking. At this rate I was going to get locked into the park! As the sun set, I had to hurry to beat the gatekeeper - you sometimes have to be prepared to run in the interests of your art! And you always have to be patient.

A stunning walk up a tumbling stream bed in the Wairarapa leads eventually to a landscape lost in time. You feel you’ve been transported to the Badlands of America – and this is the location used by Peter Jackson for some of his most atmospheric film scenes.

Pewter grey cliffs tower above you, slowly weathering into immense jagged valleys and imposing monoliths – you are dwarfed by nature here. Climbing the tortuous, slippery and narrow pathway to the topmost lookout was my goal. The view here was good, but of course I was sure it would be better if I went to the absolute precipitous edge with the valley floor a crazy 200 feet below.

The view took my breath away and I felt I was at the Seventh Wonder of the World!

Captured for posterity! Historic buildings deserve respect and one way of showing that respect is to get a great shot before they potentially disappear forever.

With permission from the owner of the old Grey Fox Barn, Greytown I explored the paddock around this evocative barn, examining angles, but nothing was shouting out to me. I had even taken a step ladder and several passing drivers honked their horns on seeing my precarious position. I smiled politely as they passed but thought dark thoughts about them!

Standing back down in the stubble of the corn field, I could see golden lines leading towards the barn, but the light was poor. I was almost prepared to give up and go home. However, the field was going to be ploughed the next day, so it was today or never….

Eventually, shafts of sunlight started to pe*****te through the grey cloud. Throwing myself onto the ground with the camera on high burst, I fired off twenty or so pictures and that was it. The sun disappeared after 30 seconds, the cloud thickened, and it started to rain. I crossed my fingers as I looked at the LCD review screen and the pictures were good. I was so relieved!
