Meeting our TCP authors in person is such a treat! This weekend I was privileged to spend a few hours with this beautiful woman having a coffee, sharing our stories, and celebrating all God is doing through her beautiful book.

Leitu Kimitaunga wrote "It's Okay...to be a Mum" to remind women who feel like life's a mess that it's okay to have bad mornings and rough days. It's okay to feel overwhelmed. And most importantly, it's okay to 'just' be a mother! Sometimes we just need to deal with the trauma we carry and grasp a new vision of who we are and what God has called us to be.

If you are a woman who longs to move beyond cultural, family or societal obstacles and lean into motherhood, this book is for you. The chapters are short (just 2-3 pages each), making it the perfect read for busy mums or those who don't normally like to read. One thing's for sure, you'll find gentle insights and practical encouragement on every page.

Our hearts are with our colleagues and friends in Turkey and Syria right now.

It’s been a week since the devastating earthquake hit, and the death toll so far is more than 40,000 precious people, not to mention the livelihoods destroyed and the countless injured and displaced.

As a publishing company, we have close ties to friends and colleagues in Turkey; in fact, a number of us have lived and worked in the region over the years.

In our bio there is a link to a short interview conducted by John Maust of MAI and Gökhan Talas, an Istanbul-based publisher whose passion is to bring words of hope to this grieving nation. We’d love you to watch it, join in prayer, and if you’d like to contribute to one of the many charities on the ground in Turkey or Syria, you’ll find suggestions in the video along with a QR code to by swiping left.

Anya founded Torn Curtain Publishing in 2020, with the goal of setting new standards of excellence in the Christian publishing industry, helping Christian authors cross the finish line and establish ongoing streams of income, and training a new generation of Christian publishing professionals. As well as overseeing the Torn Curtain team she provides mentoring and leadership to Christian publishers in various parts of the world. Anya lives in Wellington, New Zealand with her husband Jeff and their four children (and dog!) She enjoys starting the day with an early morning swim, grabbing a flat white from one of Wellington’s superb cafés, and catching the musicals and orchestras that pass through New Zealand.

I wish you were here to see this day Dad 💔

Due to negative words that had been spoken over me through years of bullying at school and abusive relationships, I never thought I'd amount to much. I never thought I would do anything significant with my life. I felt like a nobody.

Before life took its toll I had an idyllic childhood and I had bright hopes and dreams for my future ... one of those dreams was to be an author, but as the years went on and life wore me down I thought that was just yet another pipe dream that "someone like me" could never achieve.

BUT ... today I hold a copy of my first book in my hands. Today I am officially a published author.

I recently read: "... 97% of people who start to write a book never finish it. That's a pretty staggering statistic. Out of every 1,000 people that set out to do so, only 30 actually complete the task."

I DID IT!! It may have taken me over 40 years, but I finally did it!!

It’s important for authors to identify their ultimate purpose in writing. For some, the goal is to convey information. Others write to inspire or influence their readers in some way, or (my personal favourite) to impart something powerful like wisdom, hope or courage.

But there’s one goal in writing that should never be overlooked (unless you’re writing a purely academic textbook), and it’s the need to entertain.

A book doesn’t need to be witty or funny or outlandish to entertain. It simply means giving the reader a chance to get caught up, whether for a few minutes or a few hours, in a book that carries them along and has them turning page after page in anticipation.

That’s where editing makes all the difference. Whatever the genre, our aspiration is the same: that every book is truly a pleasure to read.

Story vs Teaching

We’re privileged to work with authors who have a wealth of experience—and knowledge. One thing that helps nonfiction writers, is deciding whether their experiences (or story) will be the focus of their book, or the truths, advice or lessons they wish to impart. In other words, one needs to fortify the other. Choosing which you lead with will keep you (and your readers) from getting stuck.

If you’re struggling to decide which approach is best for your book, try asking these two questions:

1. Do you see yourself primarily as a storyteller, or a teacher?

2. Picture your ideal reader. Would they benefit more from reading real-life experience, or from clear, concise teaching?

As always, feel free to reach out for help before you start writing, or schedule a manuscript assessment so we can suggest the best way to bring structure to your book.

One of the joys of Christian publishing is the incredible range of authors we get to work with. We’ve got people in their 20’s and others in their 80’s. Some of our authors have lived quiet, unassuming lives—others have literally gone out and changed the world. We’ve got authors from the Pacific Islands and Australia, from South Africa, America and here in New Zealand. They’re publishing fiction and nonfiction, memoirs and biographies, children’s books, devotionals and poetry . . . and this week we even began looking into the possibility of publishing our books in other languages!

We’re the most wonderful, diverse, eclectic mix of people—and yet there's something about when we all work together. It feels like a microcosm of heaven. It feels like family.
