Current projections would result in National receiving 50 seats and Labour receiving 34 seats. Combined, National and ACT are in a position to form a government, but may require support from NZ First.

567,000 special votes are yet to be counted, and the official results won't be declared until November 3. Until then, coalition negotiations will get underway. If you're wondering what a National-led government will mean for you, take a look at Policy.nz for a breakdown of key policies and candidates.

After grinding to a halt in 2020, immigration levels have now returned to pre-pandemic levels. This election, most parties have favoured streamlining NZ's immigration laws and providing more pathways for migrants.

Some parties, like National and ACT, emphasise the role of immigration in boosting economic growth. Other parties focus on different aspects of migration. For example, the Greens emphasise the need to protect the rights of migrants once they’re here, and TOP would create a Regional Talent Visa to encourage workers to regions other than Auckland.

A coalition involving the Green Party looks to be Labour's best chance of retaining its leadership for the next three years. However, Labour and the Greens have different policies on topics like tax, health, the environment and housing.

Labour has ruled out considering the Greens' proposed wealth tax and would limit the introduction of the Greens' free dental care plan to people under 30. The Greens aim to strengthen Labour's current approach to the climate change, saying they will establish a Ministry of Climate Change and strengthen the Zero Carbon Act.

Plenty of debate has emerged during this election about NZ’s place in an increasingly unstable and polarised world, as we find ourselves complex relationships with our partners.

Labour and NZ First both want to secure a free trade deal with India. ACT would increase defence spending, while the Green Party would focus current defence spending on climate change, humanitarian aid and environmental monitoring.

Housing in NZ is among the least affordable in the world, despite a recent fall in house prices. While all the major parties say more needs to be done to ensure everyone has affordable housing, there are major differences in how they propose to go about it. Should the state take the lead in building more houses, or loosen the rules to encourage private investors?

Recent surges in support for ACT and NZ First mean that both could play a pivotal role in post-election negotiations. The two parties share plenty of similarities - for instance, both would implement a tougher approach to gangs, withdraw from the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People and place more responsibility for things like protecting biodiversity and freshwater management in the hands of local government. So what's the difference between the two?

While NZ First would adjust tax income brackets to match inflation, ACT would slash NZ's top tax brackets to introduce a two-rate income tax system. NZ First would remove GST from fresh food, whereas ACT aims to decrease groceries bills by allowing foreign investment in NZ supermarkets.
