Launch into your literacy session with the word of the day (W.O.T.D).
Four days of new words, with a revision on the fifth day.
Each word is pronounced, broken into syllables and given a meaning. Then your ākonga are encouraged to take on the challenge of spelling the word, using it in a spoken sentence or using it in a written sentence.

Loving the TV programme 'The Traitors' at the moment, so wanted to make a Taskmaster Tuesday special traitors edition, and here be video number one...

Five tasks over the next five weeks to be played on a Tuesday (or any day for that matter, no one's monitoring it!). Each task is a group task, but one person in the group is the traitor who has their own task to do within the main task. This will be disruptive, annoying or just plain silly. You as Taskmaster will judge both the efforts of each team, and give out points to the traitors too.
End of the five tasks will see one of the groups win, or the team of traitors will win.

A real game changer for me at the end of T2 was when I introduced daily missions into my day. Teams of ākonga (3-4) took on a mission during our core learning time that was relevant to what was happening around our school or the world. I worked on 2 missions a day, calling them tima kōwhai for the first mission (connecting with the yellow part of the day on the timetable beloe) and tima kakariki (with the green part on the timetable). They had about an hour to complete the mission, but often went over. No expectation that they caught up on the learning the others were doing, the mission itself had heaps of learning embedded in it.
In the final couple of weeks, most of the class had a turn in mixed ability and age groups and were able to: create and give cards to our marvellous support staff; create an amazing leaving card for a teacher; organise an 8 square competition; design and post inspirational quotes on our wall for T3.
This created a real sense of collaboration in these groups, and gave the groups taking on the missions some real power and ownership. They also had the mana to include their classmates and other tamariki in their missions.

A quick fun little game where categories are found based on celebration days of the year.

The project based approach June update has new reading resources, and developing resources in writing and maths to bring a project approach to your literacy and numeracy.

In writing - the project is to hold a class election to find a ruling party and president for a day. This will include advertising, speech writing/delivering and more. Connects to the NZ election happening later in the year.

In maths - the project is called Megatropolis, where students create a fictional island and look into trade in goods and services. Focus on multiplication and division, with a mini focus on position/orientation.

In reading - there will be new mini projects to undertake as well as some new mini missions.

The project based approach is a way of building knowledge with your learners that they then use on a project that connects directly with what they have learnt.
The approach has three phases:
1) build knowledge in up to three areas that directly correlate to the project. This is done by explicit teaching and online lessons/tasks.
2) test knowledge and set goals for the project ahead.
3) use knowledge when undertaking projects in teams, buddies or by themselves.
