If you didn’t already know today is World Toilet Day- yes it’s a real thing around the globe and something most of us here in NZ can be thankful for. 🚽

Toilets are more than just physical structures; they serve as barriers of protection between humans and harmful waste, fostering a sense of safety and security. This can be especially critical for women and girls, who often face increased vulnerability to violence and harassment in the absence of adequate sanitation facilities.

Theatre Hawke’s Bay brought a spirited performance to the stage with Little Miss Sunshine, showcasing an endearing and darkly comedic interpretation of the story.

While it took a little while for the cast to settle in, the actors gained confidence as the show continued, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.
Juliette Douglas as Olive stole the show with her infectious enthusiasm, embodying the heart of the Hoover family. Andrew Clibborn’s portrayal of Richard Hoover, the well-meaning father, was nuanced and filled with humour, adding depth to the family dynamic.
Opposite him, Heidi Nobel as Sheryl Hoover gave a heartfelt performance, balancing strength and vulnerability as the supportive mother trying her best to hold the family together.
John Graham as Uncle Frank added wit and emotional weight, and Jonathan Jordan as the cheeky but kindhearted Grandpa added so much to every scene with his amazing comedic timing and charm. The ensemble navigated the unique challenges of this production, supported by creative staging that captured the quirky, road-trip vibe that is essential to the story.

The music, sound, and lighting added an extra layer of emotion to key scenes and
maintained the show’s momentum.
Despite a few minor technical hiccups typical of any opening night, the cast’s commitment
and enthusiasm shone through, making a heartwarming and enjoyable show.

Theatre Hawke’s Bay’s Little Miss Sunshine shows the resilience of this eccentric but determined family, and delivers the original story with humour and depth.
