There is no generally agreed definition of what constitutes ART,and its interpretation has varied greatly throughout history and across cultures. I guess all that matters for me, as far as definitions are concerned, is what meaning it has for me. Art is a form of expression and communication. I get to record what is of importance to me.

Just chilling on a hot Sunday afternoon thinking about stupid stuff like New Zealand’s government. So, I played around and made this.

As I was making it I remembered an old advertisement that went something like this.
When do togs become un**es? Undies,un**es, togs! Basically, the piece of clothing was determined an un**es or togs depending on where the attire was worn.

Got me thinking 🤔 (probably too much for a hot Sunday afternoon) 🤣 Who else has been thinking?

Sometimes I can get really annoyed with myself when I try to rectify a mistake but make it worse. Have taken the dremel to this piece. I’m still not happy though.

Enjoying creative space with artist extraordinaire, Tangimoe Clay and our PAREAROHA whānau in Te Whakatōhea. A wānanga about grief and remembering/commemorating those that have gone behind the veil.

Mahi in progress 🧑🏾‍🎨

I love the koru and what it symbolises. 💫

In Māori art, the koru symbolises new beginnings, growth, and harmony. Its spiral shape represents the unfolding of life and the never-ending cycle of renewal. The koru is a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of all living things and the continuous journey of life. Embracing the koru in art reflects the beauty and balance found in nature and the importance of unity and growth in cultural traditions.

Whilst I had made this as a tribute to the King and his passing, I never imagined that the intended recipients would reveal themselves in the form of my nieces. On 11 September 2024 they learnt that their Pāpā no longer existed in this earthly realm and it seemed immediately appropriate that this hue was to honour their King. A vessel for the traditional hair cutting that would forever bind them to their first male love.

Hue (gourd) update: I have decided to include a native bird of New Zealand on the hue. I have chosen the Kererū following a podcast I recently listened to (Pū Kōrero: Puke Timoti). Puke Timoti reigns from Ngai Tuhoe and is an expert in matauranga about native birds. I really loved the new learnings I gained and highly recommend you take a listen to the podcast on Spotify.

I’ve finished the sketching of the Kererū, applied gesso and begun the process of the underpainting. I have never painted a bird, let alone the majestic Kererū. What stories do you have about native manu in your rohe (area)?

The koroua (grandfather) carved a few hue (gourd) in his day. Nan treated these hue with such care and protection that I truly thought (as a child)that there were no more hue in the world. This scarcity mindset would further deepen when Nan took a trip to Invercargill (South Island, New Zealand) and came home with stories about the “poha” (type of gourd) that was used to preserve birds in their fat. Tītī or mutton bird was an excepted choice of bird for preservation. I remember the Kuia being so excited about having seen and held a poha. What a gift that experience was for her.

So, my researching and working with the hue is like a repurposed gift for me. It draws me closer to my grandparents who had an appreciation for these taonga.

I have successfully applied another coat of paint to the hue. The kowhaiwhai partern I am using is the koru. The koru is very popular in use and has come to represent peace, tranquility and spirituality. Furthermore, re-growth or new beginnings is often depicted. The Koru is also often associated with nurturing so when interlocked with others is frequently used to represent the strength and purity of a loving relationship within a family. This kōrero is particularly important for the intended recipient of this hue.

If you’re keen to follow my hue journey, remember to 👍🏽 LIKE and FOLLOW for regular updates. 🙏🏾💫
