ALL BLACKS: ROBERTSON SAYS RETURNING PERENARA IS 'THE KORO WE NEEDED' 🧙🏿‍♂️ 🖤 🤍

Experience at halfback counts for a lot when it comes to picking the All Blacks first test side, says coach Scott Robertson.

In a tightly congested picture for the number nine jersey, 80-test veteran TJ Perenara has won the race to start against England this Saturday in Dunedin, with Robertson saying that he is "the koro we needed".

"He picked himself, he's on form, he's a competitor. He's 80 test matches in."

Finlay Christie will come off the bench, while Cortez Ratima will have to wait for his test debut. All three had solid cases for starting this test, however it does feel fitting for Perenara to get the nod given that it was against England that he suffered a serious knee injury back in November of 2022. That saw him miss a year and a half's worth of rugby, but once he returned to the Hurricanes Perenara has been in some of the best form of his career.

Other tightly contested selection areas were blindside flanker and wing, with Samipeni Finau rewarded for a strong season with the Chiefs.

"He's six foot five and 120 kilos. He's a great lineout jumper, can tackle and he's a test forward," Robertson said when asked about what he liked about Finau. The 25-year-old played one test last season and is the latest in a long line of players to try and make the number six jersey their own.

Robertson admitted the wing selections were difficult, before opting for Sevu Reece and Mark Tele'a.

The most interesting call was at fullback, where Stephen Perofeta was preferred over Beauden Barrett. Robertson said that Perofeta's performance in the Blues' Super Rugby Pacific final win was a factor. Read more...

NEW ZEALAND UNDER 20 SN**CH DRAMATIC WIN OVER FRANCE 🔥 🖤 🤍

An inspired second half charged New Zealand to an epic 27-26 victory over defending champions France at the World Rugby Under 20 championships in Stellenbosch.
New Zealand was down 26-24 in the 78th minute when lock Liam Jack poached a Rico Simpson restart. New Zealand was piggybacked inside the French 22 by a penalty.

New Zealand’s lineout drive was a source of profit throughout and cruelly expectational French blindside Joe Quere Karaba conceded a penalty, leaving Simpson a chance to win the match with a penalty kick five metres in from touch and 25 metres shy of the target.

Into a blustery wind, Simpson pushed the ball out to the right before it curved back and slithered over the posts by a nostril hair. Euphorically Simpson raised his right arm to celebrate, but the kick was so close, the touch judge wasn’t sure. A television inspection confirmed the kick was successful. New Zealand had lost reserve prop Joshua Smith to a yellow card in the 76th minute.

Down 11-0 at halftime, New Zealand appeared sluggish and irritated by a fiercely committed French pack.

New Zealand was forced into sustained periods of defense and wilted early when fullback Xan Mousques slid over in the fourth minute.

Damage limitation was the game's name in the opening quarter and critical interventions by Johnny Lee, Xavier Tito-Harris, Logan Wallace and Dylan Pledger prevented further hurt on the scoreboard.

New Zealand couldn’t prevent two Hugo Reus penalties, but the deficit remained manageable especially given blindside flanker Andrew Smith was yellow-carded.

The spark for New Zealand’s resurgence was winger Stanley Solomon. A chip, chase and regather from inside his own 22 advanced New Zealand past halfway. Smith carried on the momentum and then combative centre Aki Tuivailala knifed through in the 44th minute.

Suddenly New Zealand had momentum, which was temporally snuffed out in the 49th minute by a 70 metre Joe Quere Karaba intercept.

There was no panic from New Zealand. Solomon scored a try in the 52nd minute after halfback Pledger weaved past lethargic tackles at the ruck. Pledger was one of New Zealand’s best with swift distribution and smart options. Pledger propelled New Zealand into the lead for the first time in the 62nd minute gratefully collecting a tighthead the New Zealand pack secured at the scrum. Opposite halfback Leo Carbonneau was yellow-carded in the 56th minute.

Reus chipped over a penalty to make it 21-19 to France in the 65th minute but the New Zealand pack was now rampant. Replacement ho**er Manumaua Letiu scored a 20m rolling maul try in the 67th minute.

A six-pass length of the field break by France didn’t yield any points as the tussle for territory became the deciding factor. Reus kicked France 26-24 ahead, but the discipline and brutality of the New Zealand pack was a massive step up from the limp efforts of 2023.

Openside Lee topped the tackle count for New Zealand with 13. Second five Xavi Taele carried ten times with venom. Only openside flanker Geoffrey Malaterre (16) made more tackles than dynamite Quere Karaba who finished with 14.

New Zealand only has to beat winless Spain in their last group match to guarantee a place in the semi-finals. France will require a bonus point victory against Wales and favours from other countries to have a chance of defending their title.

New Zealand Under 20: 27 (Stanley Solomon, Aki Tuivailala, Dylan Pledger, Manumaua Letiu tries; Rico Simpson 2 con pen) France Under 20: 26 (Xan Mousques, Joe Quere Karaba, Mathis Ferte tries; Hugo Reus 3 pen, con)

NEW ZEALAND UNDER 20 START WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CAMPAIGN STRONGLY 👏🏾 🖤 🤍

New Zealand have started their World Rugby Under 20 Championship campaign with a captivating 41-34 victory over a gritty Wales in Cape Town.

New Zealand appeared in command leading 41-20 with a 12 minutes remaining. However, Wales launched a furious rally and converted tries to replacements, Steffan Emanuel and Macs Page, shrinking the deficit to seven with a minute left.

New Zealand dispatched the restart deep inside the Welsh 22 where it was caught by talisman No.8 Morgan Morse. Astonishingly Morse kicked the ball into touch and New Zealand secured the lineout and terminated time.

Lineout and counterattack were essential ingredients in New Zealand’s success. New Zealand poached several Welsh throws, often thwarting potentially ominous situations. Despite making more tackles than Wales, New Zealand’s attack flowed smoothly.

New Zealand opened the scoring after eight minutes when halfback Dylan Pledger intercepted from halfway when New Zealand was outflanked three on two.

A failure to secure the restart cost New Zealand points. Wales built momentum and fullback Huw Anderson catapulted through three tacklers.

New Zealand hasn’t won the championship since 2017 with stifling lineout drives so often kryptonite in the barren tenure. A penalty try with centre Aki Tuivailala and winger Frank Vaenuku joining a maul would have been satisfactory for the coaching staff. Read more...

BLACK FERNS O'REILLY CUP SQUAD ANNOUNCED 🫶🏿 🖤 🤍

Talented lock Chelsea Bremner and competitive loose forward Lucy Jenkins have been named in their first Test squad for the 2024 season. Experienced loosehead prop Phillipa Love, and hopeful debutant Atlanta Lolohea have once again earnt their call-up after providing injury cover during the Pacific Four Series.

Chiefs Manawa loose forward Mia Anderson is named in the Black Ferns squad for the first time, following a blockbusting Sky Super Rugby Aupiki season and impressive showing in Black Ferns camps. Anderson joins the side with the absence of Black Ferns Co-Captain Kennedy Simon who has been sidelined with an ankle injury.

Black Ferns Director of Rugby Allan Bunting said consistency within the squad has made for a competitive selection process.

“We wanted to see consistency within our squad to prepare to face Australia, but also wanted to ensure those who missed out on the Pacific Four Series had their opportunity to put their best foot forward. We have a few injuries, but we have a competitive group of wāhine who are eager to step up and take ownership of the chance they are given.”

“We know that Australia will be continuing to adapt and improve with their new coaching group. We expect they will be well supported by their whānau and fans to deliver a strong performance in Brisbane. We are excited for that challenge and provides us with another Test to prepare ahead of our England Test and WXV1 tournament.”

The Black Ferns squad will assemble on Monday 1 July in Auckland, before departing for Brisbane, Australia on Sunday 7 July ahead of their O’Reilly Cup Test against Australia on Sunday 14 July.

MĀORI ALL BLACKS OUTCLASS JAPAN XV IN TOKYO 👏🏾 🖤 🤍 ❤️

The Ross Filipo era is off to a winning start, despite playing a quarter of the match with 14 players.

Cameron Suafoa and Rameka Poihipi were yellow carded in the Māori All Blacks’ 36-10 win against a Japan XV in steamy Tokyo on Saturday night.

Having scratched prop Joe Moody ahead of kickoff, the visitors outscored the home side five tries to two, utilising a smash and bash game-plan not too dissimilar from that of the Blues during Super Rugby Pacific.

Māori All Blacks selectors of Ross Filipo (Muaūopko), Roger Randle (Ngāti Awa), Greg Feek (Ngāti Kahugunu) and Jamie Joseph (Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Rārua, Rangitāne) have announced a 28-strong squad ahead of the team’s two-match series against Japan XV in Japan.

Fresh from their DHL Super Rugby Pacific win, seven Blues players have been rewarded for their form, with Corey Evans (Te Aupouri, Ngāti Kahu), Cole Forbes (Ngāti Awa) and Laghlan McWhannell (Ngāti Kahungunu) selected for the first time. Marcel Renata (Ngāti Whanaunga, Ngāi Takoto) and Cameron Suafoa (Ngāpuhi) have also earned selection following a remarkable season with the Blues.

Crusaders stalwart Joe Moody (Ngāi Tahu) will don the Māori All Blacks jersey for the first time since 2015. Moody will add to an already formidable forward pack alongside Billy Harmon (Ngāi Tahu) Isaia Walker-Leawere (Ngāti Porou) and Pouri Rakete-Stones (Ngāpuhi) who represent a wealth of experience, leadership and guidance in the squad.

Among the debutants is midfielder Daniel Rona (Te Ātiawa) and Highlanders loose forward Nikora Broughton (Ngā Rauru, Ngāti Ruanui). The elusive first five eighth duo of Rivez Reihana (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Hine, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) and Taha Kemara (Te Whānau a Apanui, Te Whakatōhea) will also bring plenty of speed and accuracy to the back line in their first campaign.

SEVEN HURRICANES NAMED IN ALL BLACKS SQUAD 🔥 👏🏾 🖤 💛

As the first All Blacks squad for the 2024 was announced, seven Hurricanes have been named in Head Coach Scott Robertson’s team to take on England and Fiji as the July international window begins.

Following strong 2024 DHL Super Rugby Pacific campaigns, Billy Proctor and Pasilio Tosi earn their maiden call ups to the National Team, as well as recalls for TJ Perenara and Asafo Aumua.

On his return from Japan. Ardie Savea has been named as one of two Vice-Captains, alongside Jordie Barrett.

Hurricanes Head Coach Clark Laidlaw said it was pleasing to see Hurricanes players getting opportunities at the next level.

“Our goal as coaches is to help grow people to be their best, both on and off the field and the opportunity for these young men to be able to go and represent their country is something we’re really proud of.”

Laidlaw was complimentary of the work TJ Perenara and Asafo Aumua had done to earn themselves recalls to the side.

“TJ has had a fantastic season for us. He worked away diligently for 18 months to come back from his injury and the same goes with Asafo. His form this season pre and post injury was fantastic, and to see the two of them back in the squad is really pleasing.”

On the new players called into the side, Laidlaw said.

“Pasi was the only player to play every game for us this season and his game grew and grew as the season wore on. Billy Proctor is a really impressive player, so to see him named into the squad is fantastic.”

Full-back Ruben Love has been named as injury cover.

ALL BLACKS STAR ARDIE SAVEA TO PLAY CLUB RUGBY FOR ORIES 👏🏾 🔥 🖤 💛

Wellington rugby club Oriental Rongotai will be able to call on the best player in the world for their upcoming match.

All Blacks star Ardie Savea has been listed to start at No. 8 for Ories in their Swindale Shield fixture against Wellington at Hataitai Park at 2.45pm on Saturday.

Savea will make a surprise appearance for his local club, two days before new coach Scott Robertson names his first All Blacks squad for the year.

It will be Savea’s first sighting on a rugby field in New Zealand since he took up a sabbatical with Japanese club Kobelco Kobe Steelers.

The World Rugby player of the year is a certainty to be selected for the All Blacks on Monday and is among the leading contenders to succeed Sam Cane as captain.

Oriental Rongotai assistant coach Poasa Poasa confirmed Savea had received New Zealand Rugby’s blessing to make a one-off appearance on Saturday.

He said Savea remained heavily involved in the club and always put his hand up to play for Ories whenever the opportunity arose.

“Since he got back from Japan he’s come and watched a few games with the kids, kicked the ball around, and a lot of the kids in the community gravitate to him so there is a special buzz for this weekend, especially amongst the playing group,” Poasa said.

“It’s not every day they get to run out with a potential All Black captain and the reigning World Rugby player of the year. It’s something special for the playing group as well as the coaching group to be involved with his progression as well.”

Savea won’t be the first All Blacks player to play club rugby this season. Just last weekend, Beauden Barrett made a surprise appearance for Taranaki club Coastal, 14 years after his last game for the team.

HIGHLANDERS RUGBY PLAYER CONNOR GARDEN-BACHOP HAS PASSED AWAY 😪 🫶🏿 🖤 💛

Garden-Bachop, an outside back, is the son of former All Black Stephen Bachop and former Black Fern Sue Garden-Bachop who died in 2009 after a long battle with cancer. He is also the nephew of former All Black Graeme Bachop.

It’s understood Garden-Bachop died after a medical event on Monday evening at a relative’s home in Christchurch.

A joint statement has been released from New Zealand Rugby, the New Zealand Māori Rugby Board, Highlanders, Wellington Rugby and New Zealand Rugby Players Association.

“Connor passed away on Monday following a medical event, and rugby’s collective focus at this time is on supporting his family. All of rugby walks alongside the Garden- Bachop family at this time and we are collectively united in our grief.”

Garden-Bachop was a “fantastic young player, an exciting New Zealand age-grade representative and a proud Māori All Black”.

“Wherever he played, he was a committed and popular team mate with infectious energy and someone who could light up the room.

“Most importantly, he was a loving father to his twin girls, a brother, a son and immeasurably loved by all those who knew him.”

In an emailed statement to Stuff, Highlanders chief executive Roger Clark said: “We would like to express the club’s sincerest condolences to all of Connor’s family and friends at this very sad time.

“It is extremely hard to come to terms with the sudden passing of one so young and full of life. Connor was an effervescent character who possessed a broad smile and engaging personality, he will be sorely missed.

“Again, on behalf of the club we extend our heartfelt sympathies to all those that knew and supported Connor.”

The 25-year-old, who also played for the Wellington Lions and Canterbury in the NPC, debuted for the Highlanders in 2021 as the club’s 300th player and was awarded the club’s Rookie of the Year.

He was also selected for the Māori All Blacks in 2022, making his debut during a two-test series against Ireland.

The Highlanders posted on Facebook last week announcing several players who were confirmed as not returning for the team next season, including Garden-Bachop.

Garden-Bachop posted on Instagram several days ago thanking the Highlanders for an “unforgettable five years”.

“Thank you to everyone in the south for making me feel at home, and thank you to the boys I have been honoured to share the field with, it’s been a pleasure, I will miss you all. Till next time #300.”
