Merry Christmas - Meri Kirihimete - to all our Catalysters. And here's hoping for a happy, healthy, more peaceful, less divisive 2025.

We look forward to bringing you more Catalyst Kōrero in the New Year. Do get in touch if you have any ideas of speakers or topics.

Meanwhile, keep an eye out on our Lilliput Library network throughout the basin. We have more than 20 now.

Also, huge thanks to our Lilliput guardians. You all help keep this gorgeous wee network of community book recycling going.

✨November Trap Results ✨

Over the month of November our incredible volunteer team removed 686 pests from our basin!! Lower than previous months from the year, after chatting to some other groups in Glenorchy and the Matukituki valley it seems to be a similar trend in their area too - interesting!

Summer is when we are expecting to catch the most mustelids, which do a lot of damage to our native wildlife so would be good to get as many of them removed as possible while they are young. Blood scent trails and fresh meaty baits are more effective than visual lures for ferrets! Great time to be increasing trap servicing to keep things appealing.

Keep up the great work out there ✨

Fi****ms, ammunition, drugs, and items consistent with drug supply have been seized by Police this week, following a series of search warrants in Cromwell, Alexandra, Clyde, Hawea, Wānaka and Queenstown.

Detectives from the Southern District Organised Crime Group executed nine search warrants over 17-19 December, as part of Operation Speargrass.

Quantities of the Class A, B, and C controlled drugs methamphetamine, M**A, co***ne, magic mushrooms, and cannabis were seized during the operation.

Eight fi****ms were seized along with thousands of rounds of ammunition.

Two men - aged 34 and 35 - have been arrested and remanded in custody on various drug supply, drug possession, and unlawful firearm possession charges.

Two other men, as well as two women, have had their fi****ms licences suspended as a result of insecure firearm storage and drug possession.

This operation was designed to disrupt the sources of illicit drugs in our community, and it was extremely concerning to also locate fi****ms being improperly and dangerously held.

Holding a fi****ms licence is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly and it is vitally important fi****ms are kept in safe and secure storage.

Police will continue to target those who supply illicit drugs, which cause extreme harm and damage to our communities. We can’t do this alone however, and we ask that anyone with information about the supply of illicit drugs contact us on 105.

Information can also be reported to your local Police station or anonymously through Crime stoppers on 0800 555 111.

We also encourage anyone affected by drug addiction to seek help though the Alcohol and Drug helpline on 0800 787 797, or free text 8681.

We’re strengthening infrastructure in Queenstown before we start construction at the Frankton roundabout in 2026.

Stormwater management will be bigger and better with 700 metres of new 1.4-metre diameter stormwater pipe laid, and new home and business lines. There'll also be more power to Queenstown through upgrades to nearly two kilometres of high voltage lines, 5.7 kilometres of low voltage lines, and overhead powerlines removed.

We'll rebuild sewer main feeds underneath State Highways 6 and 6A, strengthening the network from Queenstown through to the Treatment Plant. Fibre optic cable and ducting will be upgraded with increased capacity to support growing internet demand. We’ll also be improving the drinking water for Frankton through new pipeline and valves providing more capacity for growth.
