🎨✨ This past weekend, The Patch had the incredible honor of hosting for his inspiring annual Paper Bag initiative—now in its 4th year!

Once a year, this event brings together creatives over a warm cup of koko to share their artistic talent on plain paper bags. Each participant brings five bags adorned with their art, which are then redistributed in a fun lottery system.

The result? A beautiful exchange of creativity, where everyone walks away with unique art pieces crafted by fellow artists.

What makes this event so special? It’s all about celebrating art without the pressure of a formal exhibition—just pure, unfiltered expression.

Swipe to see some of the stunning masterpieces from this year’s event! 🎨💖

Check it out! congrats Pake & team

ALOHA! Well it is official and this is our first post for the Menehune Film Academy. I am so proud of this organization and just like our moʻolele of the Menehune. This organization is growing and building itself overnight!

A little background. We started this during the pandemic when all the kids were on the beaches and there was no going to school because everything was shutdown. I thought to myself as I had just bought a new camera to tell "our" native kanaka stories. I asked myself. How can I inspire the kids to tell their stories, their kupuna stories, and what can I do to inspire the need to tell our own stories? They are important and our voices matter. So we started this organically at Mākaha Beach!

I would take the camera, the water housing, and film them surfing, and show them the "coolness" of the equipment and cinema! A lot of our kids will become on camera talent either in acting or even professional surfing. They need to know how to respond to camera cues like "action" and how to speak on camera without being shy. So this is the beginning of that movement.

This is our first event and it will be an annual event so our people can see ourselves on the "silver / big screen." We plan to showcase student films from our community, indigenous films from across the Pacific, and films right here made in Hawaiʻi by Hawaiian filmmakers!

Join us and stay connected! We will be doing amazing films and content for our community because "OUR STORIES MATTER."

And following on from the extraordinary talents we have been sharing over the past 3 weeks……

🎉 Meet Emily Mafile’o, or as we affectionately call her, Emz—the Patch’s very own “Visionary”!

🌟 When it comes to Photography and Production Design, Emz is the go-to guru with an amazing flair for turning ideas into visual masterpieces. She’s definitely a star in her craft. 😉

And if that wasn’t busy enough, Emz isn’t just a creative dynamo—she’s also our lead programmer, making sure everything functions as crisply as a perfectly focused lens

✨ Fun Fact: Emz has been an avid vegetarian since she was 14 years old and is now a vegan. She is also expecting her very first grandchild and so will soon be a Nana 👵🏼

Up next from our Taro Patch team, we have Rachel | The ‘Gimme Mah Monnneyyy’ super star 💸✨

She is the reason we have a roof over our head, and desks to sit in! She is our ACE, she is our go-to guru for crafting and prepping killer reports and applications that make waves both in and out of our communities.

Some fun facts about Rach:
🏡 Living life in Raglan with epic ocean views and endless adventure.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Proudly 1 of 8 siblings
🌄 Outdoor ju**ie: From fishing & diving to snowboarding & surfing, she is all about living in the moment.
🚀 Remote worker, global connector—if you can’t contact her, she is probably in the middle of a client call or if you can’t find her, she is in a daring outdoor escapade either 🚤 Sailing, dirt biking, or just chasing adventures!

📕And finally, her favourite quote is “Sleep when you're dead" 💤 or "You can fit more into life than you think. Be kind and don't take society too seriously." 🌟

Come back next week to learn more about our collective team!

🌱Next up! meet Elizabeth “Bubzie” Mafile’o – she is "The Genius" of The Patch.

She is the glue that keeps us together. She doesn’t quite like the limelight, she is the one that is quietly and consistently behind the scenes getting s**t done. But don’t let her reserved nature fool you; she’s known for her witty shade and one liners that keeps us on our toes and always on the ready with a clap back.. 👏🏽🤌🏽

When she’s not serving up her daily dose of sassy shade, you’ll find her immersed in her next project – whether it’s crafting props, building set walls, brewing barista-level coffee, editing, fixing what’s broken, or occasionally breaking things just to fix them again 🤣

Bubzie is absolutely the one you can rely on to come to your aid in the midst of a storm…oh and she is You Tube qualified. 📝🏅💎

One of her fave proverbs - Holo pe tu’u he ko e ngalu e fasi – Stand firm and the waves will break.

🌱This week, meet Mandy. Mandy is "The Ops Extraordinaire" for the Patch. She is the one who is hot off the emails, keeps our event & prop bookings pumping, and our calendars in check, has eyes and hands over our accounts processing, and makes sure we are kept safe and we have good ol’ systems and processes in place in case any of us wanna break a leg on any given day. With a warm nature and a knack for keeping us all accountable, she's our behind-the-scenes superhero!

🧐A few fun facts about Mandy – she is a hardworking bee, she has been working since she was 11! When she was in her mid-teens she was part of a singing group that traveled nationally to SDA churches and events. Then when she hit her early adulthood life she thought she’d try some new things like throw herself out of a plane 🛫 at 18,000FT tandem skydiving and mountain-biked Waiheke Island! But these days, her greatest joy is being involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren.

📕One of her favorite mantras: "there are no mistakes, only great moments”.

Tune in next week to meet other members of the patch famili! 😎

The 2024 theme for Tonga Language Week is 'E tu'uloa 'a e lea faka-Tongá 'o ka lea'aki 'i 'api, siasí (lotú), mo e nofo-'a-kāingá - The Tongan Language will be sustainable when used at home, church and in the wider community.

This theme derives from the overarching Language Week Series theme for 2024, 'Sustainability'.

Say malo e lelei to the incredible people who make Taro Patch Creative the space that it is! Each week, we’ll be spotlighting a different team member so you can get to know the faces behind the magic ✨

This week, meet Vea Mafile’o – she is “The Maestro” of The Patch. She orchestrates the team with the finesse of a conductor, though sometimes, in a room full of creatives, it can sound more like a cacophony of broken drums and bagpipes! 😂 But in all seriousness, Vea has a magical touch, transforming everything she engages with into masterpieces, whether through her community work, directing short films, music, or movies.

📕A few fun facts about Vea: she’s a proud mom of three wonderful boys and has always had a love for the water. Her career started as a divemaster in Vavau,Tonga, she was a high school water polo player, and even captained the first XV rugby team.

🫶🏾Her favorite mantra? "Today is the first day of the rest of your life."

🧐Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes glimpses and get to know more of our incredible team!
