🛏️ Offered a Place to Stay — Got a Brutal Beating in Return 😔

A Waikato man who opened his home to a mate over New Year’s was rewarded with a vicious assault — most of which happened while he was unconscious.

Jan Weeber, 24, was struggling with mental illness and m**h use when he unleashed a bone-breaking attack on his friend.

The court heard the violence was so severe, the victim couldn’t even defend himself.

Weeber was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison after admitting charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and injuring with intent.

Sometimes the people we try to help end up being the most dangerous.

🚧 Road Cones 1 – Anzac Parades 0? 🇳🇿

Two small-town Anzac Day parades in Hauraki District have been forced off the main road and onto the footpath — all thanks to the cost and complexity of temporary traffic management.

With the $15,000 budget scrapped last year, local RSAs had to plead with council just to keep the parades going. The result? Veterans marching down footpaths instead of proudly taking to the street.

🗣️ Even Transport Minister Chris Bishop weighed in, slamming the current rules as “insane and absurd” and promising change.

Let’s hope next year’s battle is won by common sense — not cones.

🗳️ Australia’s Election: A Political Circus Unchained from Reality? 🇦🇺

OPINION – WaikatoTimes

If you’re craving a look at politics completely uncoupled from fiscal reality, look no further than Australia’s upcoming election.

With voting set for May 3, things have taken a strange turn across the ditch. A few months back, it looked close — Liberal leader Peter Dutton was gaining momentum, while PM Anthony Albanese and Labor were floundering for clarity.

Now? It’s starting to feel like an otherworldly political theatre with spending promises and bold claims flying — reality, optional.

📉 Will common sense return before election day, or are voters in for a wild ride?

🏥 "Waikato Medical School Might Be 20 Years Too Late" – Health Advocate

Malcolm Mulholland, chair of Patient Voice Aotearoa, says New Zealand’s health system is the worst it’s ever been — and the long-discussed Waikato medical school might be arriving far too late to fix the damage.

📍Mulholland will be in Hamilton this Thursday night, urging locals to share their experiences and concerns during a public roadshow on the state of healthcare.

“Without a shadow of a doubt, it’s the worst it’s been,” he says.

With increasing strain on services, workforce shortages, and growing wait times, the question is: can a new medical school still make a difference — or is it too little, too late?

⚠️ 24-Hour Ordeal: Hamilton Man Jailed After Violent Meth-Fuelled Attack

Joshua Lee Eyre, 22, has been sentenced to two years and 10 months in prison after subjecting his girlfriend to a horrific 24-hour assault involving strangulation, beatings, and death threats.

High on m**hamphetamine, Eyre tied up the woman, whipped and beat her, and threatened to dump her body in an offal pit. She eventually escaped and fled to a Hamilton café to get help.

He pleaded guilty to:
🔹 Strangulation
🔹 Injuring with intent
🔹 Assault with intent to injure
🔹 Assault on a family member

💬 The case is another grim reminder of the severe dangers tied to m**h-fuelled violence and family harm.

⚖️ Doctor Faces Tribunal Over Filming, Inappropriate Conduct with Partner

A New Zealand doctor is under scrutiny after allegedly crossing professional boundaries during a sexual relationship with a submissive partner — including filming her kneeling in his medical office and taking vaginal swabs.

The case is being heard by the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal, following charges brought by the Professional Conduct Committee.

🗓️ Incidents in question occurred between June 2018 and January 2019.
🤐 Both parties have name suppression.

The case raises serious questions about ethics, consent, and the responsibilities of medical professionals — particularly when professional spaces and clinical procedures are used in the context of personal relationships.

🧢 “He Pulled a Screwdriver”: Hamilton Retailers Speak Out on Shoplifting 🛍️🔧

When a shoplifter tried to steal a $35 hat from Backdoor, a popular streetwear store in Hamilton, manager Tane stepped in — only to be threatened with a screwdriver.

“I didn’t press him too hard,” he told the Waikato Times.

Retailers across Hamilton say shoplifting is on the rise — and it’s not just about lost stock. It’s about staff safety, intimidation, and a growing sense of helplessness.

🔒 Some shop owners now train staff not to intervene, while others install more surveillance or rely on police — though response times vary.

🗣️ Retailers say what's needed is real support, not just advice, and a justice system that takes retail crime seriously.

🚫 Jamie Strange Won’t Run for Hamilton Mayor 🗳️

Former MP Jamie Strange has officially ruled himself out of the race for Hamilton mayor in this year’s local elections, saying the "timing's not right."

His decision clears the field — possibly for centre-left councillor Sarah Thomson, who has strongly hinted she’ll be running.

When asked if he was stepping aside to support her bid, Strange was coy, saying he’s been talking to “candidates – plural.”

The left still has a card to play… but who will lay it down first?

🪖 Call for Help: Waikato WWI Connections Sought 🌾📜

Brian Templeton is on a mission to uncover his late father’s untold World War I story — and he’s asking Waikato families for help.

His father, Richard Horne Templeton (Service No. 17445), served with the Waikato Mounted Rifles in Egypt and Palestine. Brian recently found an old photograph of Kiwi soldiers in the Sinai Desert — and believes some may be from the Waikato region.

“I’ve never managed to find out who his buddies were,” he says.
“That photo might be the only clue.”

📣 If you had a family member in the Waikato Mounted Rifles during WWI, especially in Egypt or Palestine — Brian would love to hear from you.

Let’s reconnect the stories. Let history breathe.

📈 Inflation Tipped to Rise for First Time in Nearly 3 Years 💸

All eyes on Thursday’s data, with experts expecting NZ’s annual inflation to creep up to 2.4% for the March quarter — marking the first rise in nearly three years, according to forecasts from ANZ, ASB, and the Reserve Bank.

📊 While the lift is modest, it signals a potential shift in the economic trend.

🏦 However, economists say the Reserve Bank is still likely to ease interest rates further in the coming months, as the overall inflation rate remains within the target range.

🔍 Key takeaway: A bump, not a blow — but a signal worth watching.

📈 Net Immigration Rises Again After 15-Month Decline 🌍✈️

After more than a year of steady drops, New Zealand’s net immigration is climbing once more — rising to 32,922 in the year to February, according to Stats NZ.

🔻 The decline had stretched over 16 months, dropping from a record high of 135,529 (Oct 2023) to a recent low of 30,932 in January.

🗳️ One small but notable boost? An uptick in arrivals from the United States, thought to be influenced by the US presidential election results in November.

What’s next? With global movement picking up and NZ remaining a sought-after destination, we could be seeing the start of another upward immigration swing.

🏉 Editorial: Are We at Risk of Losing the All Blacks? 🇳🇿➡️🌍

First it was the America’s Cup — now, could the All Blacks be next?

With whispers of New Zealand Rugby (NZR) eyeing offshore opportunities to secure richer financial backing, fears are growing that the cultural heart of Kiwi sport might follow the same path as Team New Zealand.

💬 Just like Grant Dalton took the Cup abroad in search of deeper pockets, NZR seems increasingly willing to trade local loyalty for global dollars.

Yes, the All Blacks are a global brand. But they’re also ours — a cornerstone of New Zealand identity, pride, and connection.

The question now is:
🔹 Will they still belong to New Zealand if their future is bankrolled elsewhere?
🔹 And at what point does chasing commercial growth come at the cost of grassroots support and national spirit?

This isn't just about money — it's about who the All Blacks play for.
