DUA IN DEPRESSION
Farid Ahmed

My depression and dua I went through many episodes of depression in my life. Since my childhood, I suffered from it time to time. In my childhood, I never took any prescription medicine for it, but after my accident in 1998, I was prescribed anti-depressant which made my condition worse. I was inspired by my father’s regular dua during his night prayers (Tahajjood) when I was very little. I used to cry with him when he was crying in his dua. He used to recite Quran loudly in his Night Salah, followed by his loud dua. In his dua, he used to cry like a child with his heart and soul, and after crying with him I used to feel a serenity in my heart. I took that lesson as a favourite life-lesson for me, and since then, whenever I feel depressed, I make dua to Allah. For example, on 15 March 2019, the shooter killed my beloved wife in the Mosque in Christchurch, NZ, and that night I devoted myself in dua for the peace in my heart, and for my child’s heart. My dua was,
“Allahumma anjil sakeenata fee qoloobinaa, (O Allah! Send the peace in our hearts).”
I was numbed initially, could not cry, felt intolerable burning in my chest with grief. I knew that was not a good sign at all. I began Salah at night and dua in Sijdah and after a while my heart began to unlock, and I managed to cry in my dua. The healing began from there. The question is, did dua work in my depression? Yes, it did for me and my child, and we did not need any anti-depressants. Alhamdulillah!
How that is possible?
Anyone can ask this question and I think everyone should ask this important question. I shall try to answer briefly as a practical witness to it. Depression is a constant sadness. It has many symptoms, but to simplify I shall only discuss about few symptoms for our understanding here:
1. Constant sadness: Why do I feel sad? When I feel something has gone against me, or something I lost that is dear to me, then I feel sad. Dua works as spiritual remedy for that sadness in me. How? Dua reminds me that what happened to me is for my best. How do I know that? I know because Allah has informed us about it in the Holy Quran. “But you may dislike a thing that is good for you, and that you may love a thing that is bad for you. But Allah knows and you do not know.” [2:216] The reassurance from Allah changes my sadness into happiness.
2. Hopelessness: When extreme stress makes me feel hopeless, it reminds me of my depression. Again, dua works as my remedy. Dua reminds me that I must trust that Allah is there for me with HIS Mercy. It reconfirms my hope. Allah never likes me to be hopeless, so why should I? Holy Quran states: “And never give up hope of Allah’s (gift of) Mercy: Truly, no one feels sad for Allah’s (gift of) Mercy, except those who have no faith.” [Al-Quran 12:87]
3. Loneliness: When people betrayed me many times, I felt alone in the wilderness. But dua quickly reminds me that I am never alone because I can make dua to Allah anytime from anywhere without making any appointment or any fee. Dua connects my soul with Most Loving Allah (A-Wadood), and I feel at home. I feel I have a full-time company, and HE is Allah. When I make dua to HIM, I feel as if I am directly talking to HIM. I feel HIM close, as HE has assured in the holy Quran: “When MY servants ask you (O Prophet) concerning ME (In their dua), I am indeed close to them: I listen to the prayer of every (humble) caller when he calls ME.” [2:186]

EARTHQUAKE AND OUR DUTIES

“Do you feel secure that HE WHO is in the Heaven will not cause you to be swallowed up
by the earth when it rumbles (As is it is an earthquake)?” [Al-Quran 67:17] Earthquakes
Earthquakes have happened before, is happening nowadays, and will happen in the future. This is how Allah has planned this earth to be. Behind earthquake, there is Allah’s Great Wisdom. Earthquake never sounds pleasant. I have experienced earthquakes in my city Christchurch New Zealand, with terrifying effects with life loss. Recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria is heart-breaking. Human sufferings are at the peak. Our hearts go to the suffering people, and we pray for the ease in human sufferings.
Our duties:
We can learn and do many things from the Earthquake. Some examples are below:
Thank Allah: We must thank Allah for HIS mercy on us. If Allah wanted to punish us for our wrong-doings straightaway, HE could allow earthquake to happen every now and then. Or HE could destroy the entire population by earthquakes for their sins.
Fear Allah’s punishment: We need to increase our Taqwa (Fear of Allah’s punishment). Allah is Ar-Rahman (The Kind), but “Maaliki yau-mid-deen (Owner of the Day of Judgment)” as well. Earthquake can be a reminder of Allah’s punishment. With Allah’s fear, we must try to avoid sins (Evil actions).
Repenting: Allah’s forgiveness prevents calamities. For example,
“Ask forgiveness from your Lord, Surely, HE is Often Forgiving. HE will send rain to you in plenty; give you increase in wealth and children, and grant you gardens and grant to you rivers (of flowing water).” [Al-Quran 72:10-12]
Remembering death: As believers we must remember that death will come to us anyway. Instead of fearing the death, we should do righteous deeds more and more to be prepared for a good death. Our ultimate home is Paradise, and this life is for the test. In my teenage years, whenever I felt lazy to perform Salah in Winter nights, I used to remember, “If I die without prayers?” That reminder helped me to get up and perform Isha and Fojor Salah.
Compassion: We must express our love for the suffering people. We must help them in whatever way possible. Believers are the center of love, and followers of Rahmatullil A’alameen (Mercy for the worlds Muhammad peace be upon him). We are taught to help humans for the love of Allah to receive rewards from Allah.
Unity: We should be united in good deeds. We may have disagreements, which is OK but when comes any calamities, we must stand in the same platform to help one another, to unite humans in compassion and in looking after one another.
Preparation: Earthquake can strike any place. Especially, some areas are more vulnerable than others to earthquake in this world. So, we can store water, and non-perishable foods and rely on Allah. We should always supplicate to Allah (DUA) for saving us from calamities, harms and devastations. We can reduce our fear by having Tawakkul in Allah. Allah assures us,
“And if anyone puts his trust (Tawakkul) in Allah, then (Allah) is sufficient for him.” [Al-Quran 65:3]
