Cat Control - always a difficult subject to talk about but one I’ve had a lot of experience with over the years working for Elite . . . This is definitely a discussion worth having on the The Pest Buzz Radio Show

An unusual find by an Alexandra resident has led to scientists calling for stricter controls around cat ownership to protect vulnerable wildlife.

All of our wonderful Pest Managers up and down the Country are starting to get Wasp Call Outs. Sometimes they turn up and find they are actually Honey Bees . . .

Identification is the best way to know what insect you are dealing with. The best tip is to sit quietly in the garden or inside the house and watch them closely. If you can get close enough, take a photo and study it, google wasps and bees.

If you call a Pest Managers Office you will be asked the following questions . . .

What are you seeing?
There are two main types of Wasp Activity, feeding and nesting.
- Feeding wasps will be spread across a food source and there may even be a loud humming noise, watch out for them on Weeping Willows and Old Mans Beard
- Nesting wasps can be seen coming and going from one specific spot usually in the ground from a hole about the size of a fifty cent piece, or up in the Eaves or Gutters of a building. Established nests can be treated straight away

Have you been stung?
We got stung quite a bit in the early days and the sting site can get very itchy. Sometimes there will be fluid build up but goes away after a week or two. If you have a sting or multiple stings and no sign of a venom sack it is likely to be a wasp

If you find a wasp nest you can treat it yourself with some very good products from your local building supply or supermarket, but please do not pour petrol on it and light it - this is silly

If you get a Pest Manager out to visit, you would expect to pay between $85.00 and $195.00 plus GST for the service of eradicating the nest. Some will come back to remove the paper nest for you if it is in a roof void

We've attached a great image which can help you identify what you're seeing

In the first episode of Fight for the Wild, we discover the incredible and unique diversity of ancient Aotearoa and how, since the arrival of humans, so much has been lost.

We meet the three introduced predators responsible for much of that loss – rats, possums and stoats - and find out about the carnage they continue to wreak on our native wildlife.

An eye opening and emotional piece.

Fight for the Wild takes viewers into the wild heart of Aotearoa and documents the desperate battle to protect it; it explores the notion of a Predator Free ...
