Hamilton Book Month Waikato Museum | Te Whare Taonga o Waikato

Sorting out your weekend plans? We recommend a visit to Waikato Museum | Te Whare Taonga o Waikato on Sunday at 12.30pm for our Lisala Halapua illustration workshop! Lisala will read his picture books which are retellings of Tongan fables and talk about how he wrote and illustrated them. We'll then have a free illustration workshop for 5-10 year olds. All welcome.

Knowledge for food gathering and survival in local environs was traditionally passed down through conversation from one generation to the next. Author and Illustrator Lisala Halapua has retold some traditional Tongan stories in a series now available through Talanoa Books and a bookstore near you.

This morning he joined me on Free FM to talk about his background, the process of retelling these stories, being a finalist for the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults (2017) and his upcoming (better late than never) Hamilton Book Month event.

Lisala Halapua illustration workshop is an hour of story and creativity especially for 5-10 year olds. It's a free event at the Waikato Museum | Te Whare Taonga o Waikato. You can meet him there - 12.30-1.30pm Sunday the 18th October.
