The mushrooms are back! I can't wait to fill the grow room for you. A big thank you to Blair and Jody Drysdale of Hopefield H**p for donating barley straw. Also thank you to my customers for sticking with me during this stressful time especially RealNZ.

So grateful to be a small business in Southland. Without the support of my customers and other small businesses I would not be able to continue what I love doing, producing fresh native mushrooms for everyone.

WINTER RECAP - Spring is here but I had a busy winter converting the grow room from shelving to hanging the straw logs and trialling the new basket/tank system. My new method of pasteurisation and inoculation is much faster so I can now do bigger batches. Unfortunately, I had 6 weeks of contamination issues which thankfully I have resolved (always the last thing to check) and so now it is all go for the tourism season. Look forward to seeing everyone again on my deliveries.

It was a pleasure to be given the opportunity to write a feature piece about home scale mushroom growing for this month's NZ Gardener magazine. I enjoyed rising to the challenge of providing a 'crash course' in mushroom biology and cultivation which would be digestible by a wide audience, but also in-depth enough to leave the reader equipped with genuinely useful knowledge. I can only hope that I managed to strike that balance, you be the judge! Keep an eye out for copies at your local supermarket or magazine dealer... Only $8.50 for some hot mushroom growing tips! Credit to Selkie the mushroom dog who proof read and edited the article in exchange for treats πŸ€“πŸ˜Ž

Yes it’s food spam πŸ˜‚
Finished work at 7 and really could not be bothered making dinner - know that feeling ?

Anyway luckily the teens had not seen the cold chop in the fridge so that was problem one solved (some protein )
And thanks to having some amazing local fresh produce in my fridge and garden - a quick stir fry resulted in a meal in under 15 min - can’t get much faster fast food than that .
NB if your teens get to your cold chops before you - a couple of poached eggs or fried eggs on top of this would have been perfect also.

The moral off this story β€œ fast food can also be healthy food”
Perhaps another takeaway could also be - on busy days pre prep some food, even if it’s just in your head as an idea ready to execute when you get home.

Got some protein + Got some veg = got a meal .

So excited for my fellow native grower Tann of Mushrooms & avos who is appearing on Country Calendar this Sunday. For the past two years a small group of us native mushroom growers (Ellen, Esperanza, Sally, Sharn, Stephanie and Tann) have been sharing advice and supporting each other in our mushroom endeavors. Tann has been there for Maharakeke so grab your popcorn and watch Country Calendar this Sunday. πŸ˜€
