Caption: Fully optioned 49LOT series Terex S-24 on a US roading job in 1974. Evident are the optional roller push block, ROPS, mudguards on the scraper (these usually didn’t last long), kidney mufflers, and fuel water separators mounted just behing the front ROPS mount.

Caption: Riding on optional Michelin radial ply tyres, one of Doug Hoods 49LOT series S-24’s is parked up waiting for the shift to start. The lack of a cab and duel engine fuel water separators point to this being one of the earlier 49LOT machines imported. It does however, have the later kidney-style mufflers which were introduced in 1973.

Caption: Higgins Earthmoving were also active in the Waitaki Basin during the 1970s, and along with O.F.Howey, Doug Hood and Earthmovers Waikato, owned a fleet of Terex S-24’s. This is a relatively early 49LOT series machine, fitted with a Terex factory supplied cab and no mufflers on the bonnet. Higgins’ machines were painted Caterpillar yellow and kept in immaculate condition.

Sneak preview of our March 2025 classic machines profile on the first elevating scrapers manufactured by John Deere- the 840, 510 and 760.

Caption: The authors model of a John Deere 840 elevating scraper in 1:25 scale illustrates just what a good model this is. Manufactured by Reuhl, it was only available for a short time but is well worth acquiring if you can find one. Expect to pay around US$600 for an example. (Photo: Author)

Caption: Great photo of one of Gina Howey’s Terex S-24’s ascending a rise in the Waitaki Basin during the 1970s. O.F.Howey owned several S-24’s and kept them in very good condition. The machine is fitted with a Terex factory cab and even has chromed exhaust stacks! For the curious, the two blocks on the front bumper are for attaching weight spreading dollies for when the machine is driven on public highways, as an S-24 exceeded the local weight limit on the front axle.

Caption: Terex 82-40 dozer push loads a fairly new Terex S-24 with a hydraulically operated apron, which would date this photo as post-1964 as this option was introduced after that date. The machines are still painted in the old Euclid “Hi-Lite Green” however, the darker Terex Green not coming into widespread use until after 1968.

Caption: Although of indifferent quality, this image shows an early 39LOT series S-24 being push loaded by another of GM’s products, a Euclid TC-12. The S-24 was working on a dam job in Saskatchewan, Canada for contractor Bedford Construction, who had 37 pieces of Euclid equipment on this job.

The only model of an early Caterpillar 627 is this 1:50 offering by NZG Models of Germany. It is pretty basic as you can see, and has been reissued in different colours and logo styles since 1969, so examples are not too hard to find. Adding the extra details that are missing would be time well spent.

Caption:Judging by the condition of this John Deere model 760, it has not moved in a little while but it is still fully intact. The open canopy arrangement is a local add-on. Appearing first in 1965, these machines were legally roadable in the USA and could be driven from job to job. (Photo: Internet)

Caption: Caterpillar promotional photo showing just how easy it was to remove the rear engine and transmission as a power pack module. A Caterpillar 988 wheel loader does the lifting honours. What the photo doesn’t show is the hours spent undoing all the hydraulic lines, wires and nuts & bolts (most of which were probably seized!)
