It was great being at the Tangata Beats Final on Friday night. Huge congrats to everyone who took the stage. Awesome to see the diverse music that was performed and so great to see the regions represented from across Aotearoa. Wishing everyone all the best for their next stage of their music journey. Thanks to the Rockquest Trust and team for providing this opportunity for our next generation of artists.

The Pacific Music Awards Trust acknowledges that we have been taking pause this week, as our nation acknowledges the passing of Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII. We also heard the call and witnessed the movement of change that Kiingi Tuheitia led at Te Hui-aa-Motu earlier this year, with the theme and call for unity – with one of the most important speeches given by him, with words that we will carry forward with us, as we navigate the times ahead, especially “The wind in our sails is kotahitanga”. We witnessed a significant moment in history at Tūrangawaewae Marae, with his tangihanga and the announcement of his daughter as the eighth Māori monarch and the second woman in this role, Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po Pootatau Te Wherowhero. We see the winds of change and look forward to the new future, and our thoughts are with all the whanau at this time.

We want to take a moment to acknowledge our dear friend, MC, PMA host who was such an important part of our team Tofilau Yolande Ah Chong – There is so much content of her – but here are some highlights of our favourites.
One of a kind, Yolande has contributed so much to our Pacific community – through her awesome personal powers and through all the work she did. For our Pacific Music Awards, she has been with us from the start – and most visibly as our MC, our host for more than half of our 20 years. She was an integral part of our wider PMA family and team. We are so grateful to you for all that you gave, all that you did and for your incredible support for our awards and for all our Pacific music community.

Our Story

About the Vodafone Pacific Music Awards: In 2004 the Pacific Music Awards Committee (PMAC) was formed to realise a vision and the inaugural Pacific Music Awards debuted at Pasifika Festival in March 2005. Encouraged by the success of the awards the PMAC set about developing an annual event as a significant highlight of the New Zealand music industry calendar. The awards committee formed a Charitable Trust to organise and host the awards, and are driven by a simple core objective: to create and manage an event that acknowledges the success of Pacific artists, celebrates and promotes excellence in Pacific music and encourages young Pacific musicians to aspire to a higher level of achievement.
