The currency note you hold is your property, right? Does that mean you can do anything with it? Like write anything on it as in the image below?

Under the Nepali law, you could be jailed for 3 months and fined up to Rs. 5000, if you did anything that could damage the currency note.

First thing first! The currency note is not your personal property. You own the value it holds and not the paper itself.

Think of it as a contract which says you will be paid "###" amount if you did "Y"! So, would you do anything that may damage or destroy that contract paper?

Or may be make additional writing? What happens if you do so? May be you will not get the money right and if you tamper with the contract, the court may not accept it as a valid contract.

And you will lose money, right?

Similarly, the currency note is a legal tender. If you have read it clearly or while you are reading this, you may take out a currency note and see for yourself.

It will read the following:

नेपाल राष्ट्र बैंक
नेपाल सरकारको जमानत प्राप्त
यसको रुपैयाँ भुक्तानी माग्न आएमा
नेपाल राष्ट्र बैंक बाट रुपैयाँ १०००
रुपैयाँ एक हजार
तुरुन्त पाइनेछ

And then it's signed by the Governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank. So, it basically says that the note is guaranteed by the Nepal Government and whoever comes for payment presenting this note shall be paid Rs. 1000!

But why the fine and imprisonment for destroying a contract? It's your loss, right?

No, it's not your loss. While a general contract may be printed in a paper that you pay for, the currency note is not printed on your personal paper.

It's the tax payer's money or the public money and hence you are not allow to destroy or damage it.

Because it is similar to destroying or damaging a public property.

So, you can hold the currency notes but with care.

Please remember, the value it holds is owned by you but not the currency note itself. The note is owned by the central bank and indirectly it's the tax payers money.

So, the note itself is not your private property.

Therefore, it is your duty to take care of the currency note!
