Happy Mothers Day 😍

“आमा” - by Agrima Poudel 7th batch MBBS

" Orange BalI and Black Ball "

by Sandeep Ghimire 3rd Batch MBBS
published in Souvenir 1st issue

I wonder how many childhood memories did these chocolates make and how many faces it lit up with smile and joy. One was enough to make our day and we got 4 of them for Rs.1. Some loved that sweetness of orange whereas; some couldn’t resist that sweet, and choose sour hot black ones. We all have our own stories with orange balls and black balls.

I asked my mother about her experiences back then. And then she said,” those sweets costs 25 paisa each, and they were a little bigger than that of your time and just once was enough to last for hours making your mouth go wow.” Well, if you got 5 rupees in your pocket, you could get 20 of those and as a child what I remember doing was, keeping all 20 of those in my water bottle and shaking it until we made orange juice out of that. In a way, let’s say, that was our Fanta made out of orange balls and then, we used to make a hole in the cap of the bottle, so that we could squeeze and drink it slowly.

A brother shared his experience about his childhood. He said, “Once he had 50 paisa in his pocket and he went to buy 2 orange balls, one for him and the other for his sister, but the shopkeeper gave him 2 white rabbits (one of the tastiest chocolates of that time) for free and that day they enjoyed. The next day he sent his sister and again the shopkeeper gave 2 white rabbits for the same 50 paisa. They shared those as well. The next day, he went to a different shop and bought 2 orange balls and shared those happily.” Who knew those sweets would make such wonderful memories. People still cherish those moments today. Those sweets gave them something to look back on and smile, even if it was just for a moment.

Talking about memories, wonder how many birthdays did they make special. Back then, white rabbit and Choco fun were considered a little expensive, and most of the children distributed orange balls or black balls. Our school was small with few students, so on birthdays, everyone distributed chocolates to the whole school. I still remember friends distributing those sweets and waiting for our turn in the assembly line. But, the fun was when there were chocolates still remaining even after distributing to the entire school. We could make juice powder out of them and have fun. Now, as I think about it, they made happy memories that we will cherish for life.

Now, they are gone like our childhood, leaving just the memories behind. Many new chocolates like Snickers, Dairy Milk, and Twix have come. But none of them will ever replace orange ball and black ball.

A poem that celebrates differences
World Down Syndrome Day
21 March
By Manita Khadka 6th Batch
4th Souvenir

"I happen to have an extra chromosome!"

I was waiting in the womb,
Pretty excited to come and meet my sister.
I was waiting in the womb,
Pretty excited to come and bring all the happiness into this small family.

But you know what,
I happen to have an extra chromosome
I happen to be different than my sister.
Where I was supposed to play with her,
I hardly could match her pace.
Where I was supposed to share countless stories with her,
I hardly could utter a word.

But blessed was I, that I got to be born.
When my parents were given an option to abort me
Just because it may be too much hard work for them to raise me,
Just because I may not live up to the perfection standards of society,
I was born....
I was born because
I had to meet my sister
Yes, I happen to be different than her
But she always says;
These differences have made me unique and special
She always says;
She is blessed beyond words to have me in her life.

How could I have survived,
If she wasn't there to love me beyond limits,
If she hadn't chosen to be brave and hold my hands for then and ever.
How could I have faced this world
where nobody thought
I belong
where they were eager
to let go of me before I was born,
If she hadn't been the shield for me
If she wasn't there to hold my hand for then and ever.

I happen to have an extra chromosome
But gone those times, where my family had to live in bereavement
I sure am, that this only brings extra love and happiness
This only gives me extra strength to move ahead
To achieve extra success
And to live life to the fullest.
I cannot imagine
if my life would be this wonderful,
If I hadn't happened to have an extra chromosome.

On Birthday of late Chester Bennington (March 20)
A poem by Pearlbiga Karki 6th Batch MBBS
4th Souvenir

Ode to Chester Bennington

Before him,
she appreciated music
but he taught her how to love it.
She never did believe in magic until she heard him play.
When his emotions got the best of him, he’d sing to her
And when she listened in silence, it would take his pain away.

For a girl who could multitask even in her sleep,
It was difficult breathing when he sang to her.
She wouldn’t look at him, her eyes automatically shut
And his voice completely took over.

He knew his voice gave her courage, gave her hope
And for his own sanity that’s all he ever wanted.
To free her from the darkness of her tormented mind,
And make her know she's not taken for granted.

She started to trust the world that had once let her down
And his voice guiding her was the only thing that kept her safe.
Then one day, he was gone.....
