These nice gentlemen, Robert and Jaran, are ready to take your kid through Ocean Sound and Sommerfesten på Giske’s music school on Sunday 11am to 4pm. The kids are encouraged to contribute to the recording of a song! There’s gonna be clapping, snapping, singing, drums to bang, shakers to shake, strings to break! It’s gonna be a lot of fun!

Bring a cake or ! There will be loads of activities to take part in and good food on the festival area.

Artist, Nina Ugland, will also have an all-digital electronic setup in the kitchen were it’s possible to try sampling, midi and modern production methods!

From Live Hanken’s session one year ago, where we recorded and filmed three songs live! Such a unique talent!
Lars Martin Vik on upright bass and Vetle Nærø on upright piano elevated the somgs in a really tasteful manner.

We’re excited to present the second show of our «He Du Hørt:» series; Rumi Rafael!

Rumi Rafael has explored many different genres over the years, ranging from cozy chamber pop to hard-hitting black metal. Now, he brings his new band to guide the audience through uncharted waters. These waters go by the name City Pop, a genre originating in bustling Tokyo. Here, smooth jazz and funk take center stage. In other words, perfect music for a summer evening by the shoreline. So put on your best attire and fill up your glass, it’s party time in Giske.

Our dear studio owner and upright bass player, Arvid Helge Giskeødegård, is turning 58… errm sorry, 85 years today!!

Without the Arvid Ocean Sound wouldn’t exist. Thanks for all the wisdom you’ve passed on to us kids and for keeping us on our best behaviour!

The young talent at this weekends SPIRE-LAB really killed it! The stuff they made is awesome! Massive thank you to producer, songwriter and artist Nina Ugland for guiding everything in the best possible way!

We’re really proud to be a part of such an important and inspiring mission like this, in collaboration with Ung i Ålesund, Spire and Ålesund Kommune!

Onsdag 5.juni kl 19.00 er det endelig klart for første sommerkonsert i Ocean Sounds nye konsertserie — «He du hørt?» I denne konsertserien får vi endelig vist frem noen av de fantastiske bandene vi har innom studio, og vi gleder oss til å oppleve første band ut, OLLiProud, sammen med dere!

OLLiProud henter inspirasjon fra artpop, rock og jazz, med forbilder som George Martin, Radiohead, Kim Larsen og Randy Newman. Sentralt i gruppens uttrykk står "den gode sang". Musikalsk streber OLLiProud etter en sjangermessig tidsløshet og drivkraften er å skape en relasjon og felleskap mellom mennesker - gjennom musikken.

Wednesday July 5th at 19.00 we are finally ready for the first studio concert of the summer, and the first concert in Ocean Sound’s new concert series — «He du hørt?». In this concert series we get to showcase some of the amazing bands we have in the studio, live from our own studio.

Paul Dempsey and Bernard Fanning, Australian rock royalty and frontmen of the legendary bands Something for Kate and Powderfinger have teamed up and made an album! As they put it: “Music is imminent!”

Apparently Bernard Fanning (or Fanno as an Aussie’s would call him) sent Paul Dempsey a text with a link to Ocean Sound’s website with the question: “Should we go?” to which Dempsey immediately replied: “Yep.”

So they came and stayed for a week last summer and our engineers and producers Henning Svoren and Anders Boska got to work with them on a couple of really sweet tracks! What a good time!

Thank you guys for saying “F**k it, let’s go!” and coming all the way from Byron Bay to Giske!

When two expert craftsmen meet:

Photographer and analog photo ambassador, Georgi Nikolov, took these gorgeous photos of piano tuner Odd Gunnar Myklebust while he was performing his magic to our Yamaha C5 grand piano.

TV2 Nyheter was making a reportage about the revival of analog photo in an age of Iphones and AI. We think it was rather fitting that the photo subject Georgi chose for the piece was Odd Gunnar. Odd Gunnar is also keeping his craft alive; a craft with deep roots and long meticulous traditions; piano tuning!

A really nice Gibson Les Paul has been on our wish list for many years now. So when this beauty came up for sale here in Ålesund we just had to go for it!

It’s a 1958 Standard made by the Gibson Custom Shop in 2012. Just by picking it up and holding it in your hands, you instantly feel that it’s a quality instrument; and you will struggle to resist the urge to hook up to a loud amp and play cool riffs! Welcome Les Paul!

-Analog tape-

One of the questions that usually comes up when people visit our control room is; «do you still use these?»
(Probably no.2 after «who famous have been her?»)

I guess the answer is a soberimg «sometimes». I have to admit that the thought of chucking them out to free up the space for more synths or outboard gear has been tempting. In a music business where production is more and more revolving around efficiency, these dinosaurs doesn’t necessarily fit in. But before the urge to kick them out the door takes fully hold, a new project perfect for tape usually comes along!

Therefore we’re really thankful for people like Paul Bernard being able to help us keep these beasts alive and well. Sometimes it’s just nice to record a band live to tape and other times they’re terrific to use like a coloring effects on previously recorded material. Other times it’s great fun to toy with the playback speed to create interesting textures.

When Ocean Sound V1.0 first was founded back in 2005 in a tiny boathouse, all projects were recorded to analog tape. To keep this legacy alive and since there’s less and less studios offering this service, our tape machines stay for now!

Even though we try to do proper maintenance and repairs continously through the year, we also usually get the wizard Paul Bernard of Bernification Audio to join us for a week of spring cleaning were we go a bit more in-depth.

Among (a lot of) other things and went systematically through the console and cleaned switches and pots, removed all modules so they were able to get all dust out of the frame which has been piling up!

Huge news!
We want you all give our newest team member, Jaran, a big hug and warm welcome!

We’re really happy to announce that Jaran is our new full time employee. Through the hiring process we’ve come to realise that full-time employment in itself is quite unusual in the studio world. This just gives us even more reasons to be proud and thankful today!

Jaran will help us gain momentum and further enhance the Ocean Sound-experience for all the amazing people that pass through our doors!

In addition to being an excellent studio engineer, Jaran is also a trained bass player, a self-professed synth nerd and probably has a tiny man-crush on Thom Yorke. Before moving to Ålesund to work at Ocean Sound Jaran has been based in Kristiansand were he worked in Christer-Andre Cederberg’s awesome studio, which is known for it’s pioneering work in immersive sound. But if we were to boil it all down, Jaran’s number one asset is probably that he’s such a great person to be around.

We have already “deployed” Jaran for a couple projects with nothing but good feedback, so we’re really excited for the rest of 2024 and the future!

Today the studio has been invaded by a group of young beatsmiths and rappers from local alternative school Stafsethneset!

We’ve had a lot of fun checking out their beats and hearing them freestyle and dissing each other!
They got to check out some of our work too! It’s safe to say that the local rap scene is in great hands!
