زار حکومت کے خلاف 1831 کی بغاوت کے متاثرین کی یاد میں اس جگہ پر صلیب رکھنے کی روایت 1850 (یا شاید اس سے بھی پہلے) میں شروع ہوئی۔ لیتھوانیا کی دوبارہ آزادی کے بعد ، کراس کی پہاڑی صلیبوں سے بھر گئی اور اس کی خبر دنیا تک پہنچی ۔ 7 ستمبر 1993 کو پوپ جان پال دوم نے ہل آف کراس کا دورہ کیا۔ یہ خیال کیا جاتا ہے کہ اس وقت ایک لاکھ سے زیادہ صلیبیں پہاڑی پر موجود ہیں۔
