Piston Damp is a Norwegian-Danish synthpop duo formed by Jonas Groth and Truls

Sønsterud. Jonas Groth is the brother of Stephan Groth, the frontman of Apoptygma Berzerk,

and has been heavily involved in the music scene for over two decades. Piston Damp started

as a side project while Apoptygma Berzerk was on tour, but it remained largely dormant until

2020, when the duo decided to relaunch the project.

Their music blends elements of classic synthpop with strong melodies and emotionally charged

lyrics. Their debut album, “Making the World Great Again” (2021), included standout singles

like “Runaway” and “Something In Me”.

The duo is praised for its catchy hooks, reminiscent of bands like Mesh, and their modern

take on electronic music.

Piston Damp has released several singles, including remixes by electronic artists such as

Pegboard Nerds and Technomancer. Their music often incorporates media samples, giving

it a unique tone that resonates with synthpop fans.

DARKWAYS - Resonance [limited black] LP

Like Italy, Spain developed a lively Gothic/Darkwave-scene early on, from the beginning of the

1980s, but at the time it was overshadowed by acts from England and the USA. Nevertheless,

there were bands such as Paralisis Permanente or later Gothic S*x and a broad Electro/Industrial

scene, for example Esplendor Geometrico. Since the breakthrough of the World Wide Web, it

has become easy for bands and listeners from all over the world to come together and exciting

bands from „exotic" countries are constantly emerging.

The Spanish trio DARKWAYS have released several recordings digitally over the last two years

and now present „Resonance", their first album on vinyl and CD. The band´s self-description is

„Darkwave from Barcelona with various influences and a passion for electronic sounds/Post-Punk."
There is a lot of truth in this, but basically it is pure Gothrock in the style of the 90s for long

stretches, which is unfortunately rarely heard today. The catchy production and repeated synth-

sounds also provide enough material for the Darkwave-clubs, where DARKWAYS are sure to

attract some attention. Songs like „Shadowdancer" and especially „I like the Night (And the Night

likes Me)" will quickly find their fans. „Inexistance" is reminiscent of Guitar Wave with driving

drums and Goth-vocals, a mixture that is guaranteed to reach an audience. „Neon Lights" is not,

as one might expect, dedicated to the 80s, but pure 90s Darkwave. „Madness", on the other hand,

rocks hard and is guaranteed to be a live favourite. Finally, „More than Dreams" also offers the

certain rock-influence and could also make the album interesting for mainstream listeners.

In the end, however, as mentioned at the beginning, it is Gothrock with Darkwave-vibes, high

catchiness and pleasantly unaffected vocals. Solid as a rock and a candidate for a huge surprise

success!

QEK JUNIOR – Das Gespenst der Freiheit [limited transparent CLEAR] LP

QEK JUNIOR´s „Das Gespenst Der Freiheit“ is a surprisingly dark, yet club-ready album that

will quickly delight old fans and appeal to new ones. „Minimal Noise Pop’ – pure German

underground. DAF meets Einstürzende Neubauten’.

Following the recent compilation CD „Art Brut“, here comes the all new, 4th album by QEK Junior!

Dominic Daub´s solo project, supported live by Tobias Dupont, has always been known for its

mix of Minimal Synth and EBM with a quirky sense of humour and always gets the dancefloors

moving. With the new album (presumably titled after a surrealist film drama by Luis Bunuel „Le

Fantôme de la liberté“) a new chapter has been written, with song titles that – if you understand

German - alone making you sit up and take notice.

As you can already guess, there is a second, sometimes socio-critical and political level here

and there alongside the humour but it never slips completely into the foreground. This means

that „Das Gespenst…” can be „consumed“ throughout as a danceable Electro-album in the club,

but can also be listened to at home in peace and quiet. Which is not always the case with Electro-

albums.

Already the album’s first track, in a dark, minimalist style, is reminiscent of The Klinik´s best days

and is sure to serve as a concert opener to put the audience in a certain mood straight away. The

dark and experimental „Extravagant“ continues, somewhere between Esplendor Geometrico and

Liaisons Dangereuses. Then, for the first time, the Minimal-Pop of „Goldene Zeiten“ (possibly

named after a Bunuel-film, too) aims for the club dancefloors, directly followed by the ironic

„Gross, Blond, Tuberkulös“.

As the title promises, things get lighter again with „Deine Mudda hört Die Krupps“ (Your mom

listens to Die Krupps). A catchy tune that is sure to quickly become a scene standard. Other

songs are vaguely reminiscent of Welle: Erdball or purest Minimal Synth at its best – and yes:

the last song „Marian“ is exactly what you´d expect...a cover of The Sisters Of Mercy that also

shows QEK JUNIOR's courage and insouciance in the face of seemingly unassailable icons.

SIXTH JUNE – 1984 [limited RED] LP

SIXTH JUNE have just released their great album ‘Stay’, and they are already releasing another

record. „1984“ is not a “new” album, but it is very special in several asspects.

It was created in 2021 during the pandemic and has so far only been released digitally. Musically,

it stands out - like so many works created during this time - from the usual Electro-Wave/Minimal-

Synth sound that SIXTH JUNE is otherwise known for. Obviously, the lockdown period inspired

many musicians to create more experimental music, and this is no exception.

„1984“ is gloomy, dark and experimental. The 40+ minute composition - the term ‘song’ would not

do the work justice - is based on a short bass line that runs hypnotically through the entire track

and is complemented by other sounds. An often slightly discordant saxophone is used, supported

by dark Space-Synths and noises such as rushing water...all nearly completely instrumental.

If you didn't know it was SIXTH JUNE, you wouldn't suspect the duo behind it. Instead of danceable

catchy tunes, listeners are presented with ambient soundscapes that are more than occasionally

reminiscent of very early Coil material („How to destroy Angels“...). Not quite as nihilistic, of course.

But a few echoes of 70s Kraut electronics or instrumental Legendary Pink Dots also come to mind.

The few vocal parts also bring Lycia to rememberance.

If you only know SIXTH JUNE through their ‘hits’, you might find „1984“ a little difficult to listen

The second album by last years shooting Electro stars EMILY KINSKY’S DEAD, in Digipak

with 8 pages lyrcis booklet!

If you love the 80s, and New Wave and Post-Punk are not foreign to you, then you absolutely

must listen to this album. ‘Black Light District’ is a dark, mystical world full of intrigue, s*x, and

loneliness, but also a space where you can find love, friendship, and redemption.

You enter this world with EMILY, a cover of the well known track by CLAN OF XYMOX. After

the ethereal intro, it seems as if everything is simple, almost harmonious, but of course, it's just

an illusion. The opener is followed by the first single DANCING ON THE BATTLEFIELD, musi-

cally pure 80s Post-Punk, but lyrically a very current debate between EMILY and a fossil fuel

manager who exacerbates climate change instead of stopping it.

If you want to know the whole story, you should definitely watch the cinematic video below!

Next comes COLD COMFORT, but the song is anything but that. It lulls you into a false sense

of security, becomes almost anthemic in the chorus, but even it can never completely shed its

darkness.

PINK PILL is probably the catchiest song on the album, the most seductive, telling you of the

incredible things that will happen if you take the pink pill. The title track follows, leading you to

the center of the album, in all its punkish gloom.

Other highlights are DEAD LOSS, with pulsating breakbeat elements, but the dark lyrics tell

a completely different story. SEMAPHORE masks the loneliness and leads you into a trance-

like, endless tunnel, throwing you back to yourself with the shoegaze hymn THE MIRROR IN

ME.

The CD includes two bonus tracks that cast another shadow on this world. WHY CAN'T YOU

LOVE ME? takes you deep into the mind of a serial killer, while SIREN'S CALL has you

searching for your loved one across all the world's oceans, yet never finding him.

As with the debut album, there will be a music video for each song, drawing you deeper into

the world of BLACK LIGHT DISTRICT. Additionally, each song on the album will be available

in both a single and a classic 12" maxi version, which are distributed across the various

editions of the album (vinyl, CD, digital) and the two singles.

So, take three-quarters of an hour, let yourself go, and dive into the BLACK LIGHT DISTRICT.

You will not regret it!

EMILY KINSKI’S DEAD is a German/Swiss project, born out of a fondness for post-punk

and new wave from the early 80s, combined with contemporary electronics. The band was

founded 2021 by Oliver Spring, René Ebner & Thomas Kowa. All 3 musicians are well known

in the Electro scene as members of bands such as NO COMMENT (Subway/Subtronic, Vision

Records, Nanopop, Echozone...) and SLEEPWALK (Celtic Circle/Khazad-Dum, Scanner...),

and as NINE SECONDS they released 4 more ‘EBM/Industrial‘-styled albums on Infacted

Recordings and Space Race.
