As a kid, was there a literary character you related to more than others?

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿?
Wow, that’s a big question. I’ve been told by those closest to me, the people who truly know me that I have an ability to pull a story out of the air. The truth of it is that my brain just pick’s up on things then starts working on its own. However, if I were to narrow it down to any kind of precise answer I would say that Folk Music, Folk Stories, Myth’s & Legends from all over the world have been a constant factor in my life. Shakespeare has been in my life since I was five years old, my parents insisted on me watching and studying Shakespeare with them as a means of education.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴/𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀?
I remember when I first read Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynn Jones as a kid. It was such an important story to me because it truly solidified my love of fantasy. The idea of this young girl being turned into an old lady because of a passing moment with a wizard. The castle that could go anywhere it wanted was so beautiful. It was these early experiences that truly fuel my desire to give some child, somewhere in the world the same experience I had reading that book. That they could read one of my stories and say ‘I feel like I’m in this world’ is something that drives me.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵?
I think when you you’ve been writing for fifteen years it doesn’t matter if you give up because the Lady Tale as I call her, always seems to come creeping back into my life. I write for the sake of writing mostly, but also because, almost in an insane way, my characters talk to me and that’s a hell of a motivator. I suppose it helps that when I get stuck with a story I find myself asking what my literary idols do in this instance, so I go back and read books I love and study what they would do in my place.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲?
I listen to all kinds of music depending on the moment. Say I’m writing a fight scene, then its heavy rock all the way, or a romantic scene then power ballads are called for. If I’m just putting nuts and bolts of a story together then I tend to put ambient music on Youtube to keep my mind relaxed. But I also love listening to Fantasy/SciFi synth type music to really get me in the mood.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝘀?
Do elderly parents count? But seriously no, I hope to get a King Charles spaniel at some point and call him Locke, after one of my favourite characters by Scott Lynch.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀?
Don’t be afraid to fail. I’ve failed more than most writers and have learned each time what I should have done better. This is a craft, like any other art so be patient, take it seriously and remember that time is on your side. Don’t write for the sake of riches and fame, write to tell great stories that connect with people and the rest will follow. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for advice, some of the key things I’ve learned as a writer was asking for the opinions of others who give great feedback. So be brave and write to your hearts content and best of luck on your writing journey.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿?

I have always been a verbal teller of tales. As a teacher, I used stories in my classroom; to emphasize a point, to teach a skill, at times to foster positive behaviour, and frequently just for fun. I used puppets to help tell the story, but I never wrote any of my stories down. In 2017, my son, Sam, who is a writer, encouraged me to write and submit a story which was accepted for publishing. That success inspired me to continue and I’ve been writing ever since.
Now, working with other writers keeps me keen and inspires me to write better stories. I especially enjoy being involved with a supportive group like The House Of Loki I love being a group leader, and my stories are better because of group expectations, support and feedback from other writers.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴/𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀?

I write across most genres, and for all age groups, but writing children’s stories is my passion and more enjoyable. I get to write the type of stories I would have loved to read when I was a child.
There is no limit to what you can imagine and put in to story for children. There is something special about reading my stories to children in my local schools and to my grandchildren and getting instant feedback through their reaction. I love their honesty.
I guess when you write for children, it adds an element of fun in your life which keeps you young at heart.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵?

The main thing that keeps me going is the positive support from other writers. I know I can always ask one of my writer friends to read a story and suggest ideas or just throw ideas around. It’s important to share your stories with others. From time to time, I can’t get started on a story or can’t work out where my current work in progress is going. When that happens, I read back through my
published stories. It’s both humbling and inspiring and usually helps me start writing again.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲?

I know most of my writer friends listen to music while they write, but maybe because I’m dyslexic I need to have no distractions when I’m putting my thoughts onto the computer. I like everything to be quiet — except for the sounds of nature — when I write. Consequently, most of my writing is done when everyone in the household has gone to bed or in the afternoon when my
husband has his power nap. The funny thing is I can read a book with lots of noise and distractions. I get lost in the story.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝘀?

There have been many pets in my life; tiny mice, guinea pigs, ducks, geese, chickens, goats, cats and dogs; and I could write a book with all their funny stories, but I do not currently have pets in the normal sense of the word. The neighbour’s dog, Monty, has claimed us as his wannabe family while they are at work. He visits at least three times a day for snacks, pats and cuddles.
At the farm, there is a mob of half-a-dozen wallabies who greet us on our arrival, demanding rabbit pellets. Each has a name and different personality. They bring me the same joy as having a pet, but they remain wild; no pats or cuddles.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀?

Don’t be afraid to get the words onto the page. A first draft is called that for a reason. It doesn’t have to be faultless straight up, nor is it usually perfect.
I encourage all writers to share their stories with others and be open to feedback; not seeing it as criticism, but as a way to improve your writing.
The synonym option on your computer is your best friend if you want to keep your stories interesting, don’t use the same word in close proximity.
My best advice is read lots of books across a wide range of genres. Enjoy the story, but if you want to be a better writer, also think about the ideas and the way the author told it.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿?

I find that I get inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. I have a real love of story-telling. I mean, think about it: writers create their own worlds, their own cast of characters, and get to decide everything that happens – wow! I get inspired about the idea that something that starts off as a thought in my own head can transform into something different and very real. It’s a creative process that helps me grow a little more every day - so whether you enjoy writing, or if you prefer drawing, painting, or making models, or dancing, singing, acting or all of them combined, then you’re a creator, too. It’s a fantastic feeling – go for it!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴/𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀?

The best thing about being a writer is being able to share my stories. As a boy, I used to love going to the library and wandering along the forests of shelves, browsing the magical worlds of books, then making my selections before curling up at home with a new set of adventures. So, being able to share my stories with you is a kind of natural progression from that. I still read loads, from authors long gone, to authors new and fresh – it’s a form of time travel in a way. And it’s a privilege to share my own tales, and hopefully enrich the lives of others.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝘀?

I don’t have any pets at the moment, as my wife and I are out and about quite a lot. As a boy, I used to have a Jack Russell (well, he was mainly Jack Russell, but he was a bit of a mixture really!) and he was as mad as a box of frogs! He had floppy ears, one of which was permanently inside-out and he had the sweetest brown eyes. He was so crazy, he even ran into a wall once and broke his nose; from then on, he had this cute snore, like a flute and his paws would whirl about as he ran in his sleep! He used to smile, as well. Unfortunately, for anyone who didn’t know him, he looked as if he was snarling because his top lip used to rise up and expose his teeth – and because he’d broken his nose, he used to snort when he smiled. Loopy, loveable and I miss him like mad. Love your pets like there’s no tomorrow – they really are special.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵?

It’s important to be kind to yourself when anything gets tough – including writing. That doesn’t mean you’re being weak or soft: kindness is strength. Kindness to yourself and kindness to others. So, when it gets tough, I ask myself why I started doing it in the first place, and I think of all the things I said above – and this helps me keep going. I also find being part of a community really helps. My advice would be to surround yourself as much as possible with other people who enjoy the same things. Whatever fires the passion in your heart, join groups, clubs, teams of others who share that passion. It really helps, because you see you’re not the only one who is struggling at times – and your friends, your community, will help you through. Similarly, they will cheer you on when you’re flying high. That’s what friends are for, right? I call my writing community my ‘writing tribe’, and the House of Loki team are a big part of that. Whatever you do, don’t quit when times get tough – these times will pass and good times will come.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰/𝘁𝘃 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴?

Oh, my days – yes! Some of if you may never have heard of. For example, if I’m writing a spooky scene in a dark forest, or a graveyard or something, I just google ‘spooky forest music’, for example, and Youtube will pop up with something. I’ll select music that fits the story mood and then it’s on with the headphones and go with the flow as I write. If I’m
writing an action scene, I tend to choose a heavy metal soundtrack; Iron Maiden is a go-to for me on these occasions, though AC/DC, Motorhead etc are also faves of mine. Quite simply, if I want to write a scene that grabs the reader and puts them on a rollercoaster ride, I’ll choose music that grabs me by the lapels and throws my in the air! Superfun! (PS – I’ve even listened to Enya when writing gentle scenes. But don’t tell anyone, okay?)

W𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗸?

Snacks, do I love snacks! Big snacks, small snacks, everything in between snacks! To pick a favourite is probably the hardest question of the whole interview… How do I choose between the mouth-watering loveliness of a bag of cheese and onion crisps, the silky wondrousness of a caramel-filled chocolate bar, the tantalising taste-explosion of mini-flapjack bites, the gooey gorgeousness of a custard-loaded donut, the… G’ahhh! Malfunction! Malfunction! I’ve blown a gasket! I’m heading for the snack cupboard right now – Byyyyeeeeee!
