Most news heroes have no name

Respect for all the journalists who collect facts on the ground, for everybody to know what is really happening everywhere anytime. In too many countries journalists are being threatened, prosecuted and even killed, simply for sharing facts. Nobody knows the bravest reporters, because they work underground, in strict anonymity to remain safe.

Respect for all the people who help journalists doing their jobs, especially under repression or forced into exile. The people who fix, translate, drive, cook, shelter; all those who do everything needed to get facts published fast, without ever getting the credits.

Most people who help independent news reach all of us every day, are unknown. Salute to these heroes without names on world press freedom day.

Drie jaar na de coup lukt het het Myanmarese leger niet om delen van het land onder controle te krijgen. Analyse door de NOS laat zien dat in die gebieden steeds vaker luchtaanvallen worden gebruikt - ook al zijn burgers daar vaak slachtoffer van.

Ten Myanmar filmmakers have been selected by an
international jury to make unique short documentaries. DVB
is organising this contest for the second time, to support
independent filmmakers to create original content.

The filmmakers are granted full creative freedom, but will all visualise in their own ways how people struggle to survive under the current military regime. Each film crew will receive an editorial & safety training and production budget. The 15 minute productions have to be finished by September 15, to be translated and subtitled after.

By October each week a short doc will premiere on DVB TV and online (with English subtitles). After all the documentaries have been aired, audiences can cast online votes in December. At the end of December DVB will reveal in a special broadcast which short doc has won the Jury and the Public Short Doc 2023 Award.

Very proud this is working out well. Ten Burmese filmmakers have been selected by this international jury for DVB’s Peace Documentary Competition 2022. The winning filmmakers are awarded a production budget and professional training for ten weeks and submit their final short doc at the beginning of December. Hope this competition will help creative filmmakers from Myanmar reach global audiences.
