BOOK DESIGN ______ Repost
‘I hope to contribute to the decolonisation debate with a radically nuanced look at the work of Paul Julien.’ – Andrea Stultiens

Paul Julien (1901-2001) made 15 journeys through equatorial Africa between 1932 and 1962. His trips resulted in extensive photo and film reports, that are extraordinary in their variety and consistent quality. At the same time, they are problematic. The image that Julien sketched of ‘the African’ was strongly influenced by Western colonial views and continues to have a negative impact on the lives of people on the continent and its diaspora.

After Julien’s death, his photographic legacy was transferred to the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Here, artist and researcher Andrea Stultiens has been researching the archive and imbuing it with new perspectives since 2012. Through ‘rephotography’ and ‘collective making’ in collaboration with members of communities photographed by Julien, she brings the work back to its original context. In doing so, she provides space for valuable encounters, interactions, perspectives and collaborations.

Andrea’s research resulted in the exhibition and publication ‘I wish there was colour, I wish there was sound’. In the publication, the ‘archive’ by Julien and the ‘activation’ by Stultiens are represented by separate bodies that are connected by a double spine. The index system allows readers to navigate between the two bodies and find parallels, connections and contradictions between ‘then’ and ‘now’. Readers are invited to reflect on how we should relate to visually-appealing, even beautiful photographs that nevertheless memorialise problematic pasts that remain painful to many people.

The publication is the 8th volume in the book series of the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Visit ‘I wish there was colour, I wish there was sound’ until the 15th of September in Rotterdam.

HOT OF THE PRESS _______ Landscape Logic by Steffen Nijhuis is an essay on the need for a landscape-based approach to designing sustainable urban environments.

Urbanization is one of the biggest challenges of this century. Urban development comes at the expense of fragile ecosystems that protect and provide us with food and water, not to mention the associated increasing vulnerability to flooding, drought, and social inequality. We therefore need a landscape-based approach to urbanism that considers the biosphere as the context for social and economic development and takes the as its basis.

Landscape based urbanism utilizes the understanding of the landscape system and its ecological and social-cultural processes and relationships – landscape logic – as the foundation for designing sustainable urban environments across scales. Design with nature, people, and history are at the approach’s core. Using landscape logic, we can build nature-inclusively and climate-adaptively and ensure a healthy and safe living environment for everyone.

NEW______ Author Raoul Bunschoten presented the first official copy of the new publication by ‘Taiwan Strait. Conscious City Incubator’ to professor Wang Shaosen at a reading at the University of Xiamen, China. The Taiwan Strait is a liminal space, and a natural incubator. These two conditions create a unique opportunity for implementing a future city-making process.
The Conscious City concept brings together all the challenges facing contemporary city-making. It is a concept for the urban curation processes required for future cities; for adapting to the impacts of climate change, emerging intelligences, a growing population, affordable housing, the need for a new pact with nature, as well as navigating the peaceful transformations in the way we live which shape our future. This book serves as a manual for creating the Taiwan Strait Conscious City Incubator, introducing a gamification method that encourages actors and agents from various communities, institutions, and disciplines to collaborate in planning a new kind of city.

‘Taiwan Strait Conscious City Incubator’ is of interest to those both within and beyond the fields of architecture and urbanism; to architects, researchers, architectural historians, urban planners, students, as well as those engaged in politics, the economy, and culture. Most importantly, it is for citizens anywhere in the world who wish to play and shape the future.

My Mom Wants to Go Back Home is a documentary diary by photographer Hanna Hrabarska. Together with her mother Iryna, she fled the war in Ukraine, to find a temporary home in the Netherlands. Through the lens Hanna captures the story of her mother forced to leave their country in the face of war.
‘This book is a journey. In the beginning it runs across borders, countries and cities. Later it extends inwards, into a landscape of our thoughts, feelings and emotions’.

THROWBACK _______ Last week Taco Dibbits, director of , accepted the first copy of the new publication by artist .degoede. This was preceded by an interview with the artist by .

𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 not 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫yone, published by , presents De Goede’s complete serie of 99 astral drawings (1982-2023). The book was released on the occasion of the acquisition and long-term loan of together 65 works from De Goede’s series of Astral Drawings (1982-2023). An installation of 55 of these works is on display in the Rijksmuseum’s 20th century collection display for six months from mid-May.

A poignant news photograph, a striking headline or a major international event: for more than forty years Kees De Goede (1954) has been responding very tangibly to the news. For his series of ‘Astral drawings’ he uses newspapers as subject matter and as the image support. He paints, draws, applies gold leaf to the pages pr manipulates the paper. The works express a great curiosity about and involvement with the world. Recurrent themes include space, science, faith, violence, racism and geopolitics. The series tells the story of the artist - and how he relates to a rapidly changing world during the years surrounding the millennium transition.
