IRA JIGILO

1990, Belarus

I am a photographer from Belarus. I was born in 1990 in a village in Polesie. I started shooting at the age of 10 when my dad gave me a cheap Kodak camera for my birthday. I still shoot on film, but the cameras are cooler. I never studied photography, everything happened organically. I just took pictures of friends, cats, dogs, random people walking down the street, running, sitting, lying down — everyone is doing his own thing.

20 years later, I do the same — walking and observing: I come across funny, sad, beautiful or ugly moments, and I take them with me on film. I’m always on a mission.

After the Embers Burn and Die

Growing up, my father’s folk tales blurred fear and morality. He'd transform into beasts, teetering on the edge of control, while also teaching the sacredness of the land through Native American rituals—lessons later revealed to be built on a mistaken heritage.

This ongoing work explores identity shaped by false truths and self-created myths. Through photography, I navigate the liminal space between fiction and reality, investigating mysticism, animism, and the dual power of stories and images to define our understanding of the world.

ABEER KHAN

1989, India

In India, many of us abstain from celebrating festivals and weddings for a year after the demise of a family member. However, in large joint families, where the number of deaths increases over time, this tradition can leave the bereaved with few years to truly celebrate life.

This space, where life is accepted and circumstances acknowledged, is central to Daaera's exploration. With the loss of my parents this year, I have felt my capacity for resilience has expanded significantly. This photo essay represents a refuge within our bodies- an inner circle for introspection, self-discovery, and solace during tumultuous times. Within Daaera, individuals confront their fears, drawing strength from the intertwined histories and memories. The boundaries of this inner space encompass the past, present, and future, forming a circle for mourning, growth, and transformation.

Silent Delights

A visual journey where reality meets dream—blue hues evoke calm, mystery, and vastness, while spectral figures and surreal elements emphasize fragility and transformation. Starting with photography, I blend experimental techniques and advanced editing to craft ethereal, dream-like worlds that invite introspection and contemplation.

FRIDA VASAS

1991, Hungary

Frida’s photographic practice is a journey into the complexities of the human experience, deeply influenced by the symbolism and power of remote volcanic islands. Rooted in the belief that space and place can shape our understanding of self, her work delves into how natural environments and cultural traditions influence contemporary life. Through her lens, the volcanic island—its raw, transformative energy—becomes a metaphor for both personal and collective histories, as well as the evolving nature of identity. At the heart of Frida’s practice lies an ongoing exploration of inner landscapes—those emotional and psychological terrains that inform our understanding of identity, gender and place. Her work critically engages with the intersection of gender roles and the ongoing conversation around gender equality. By capturing scenes that bridge the mundane and the extraordinary, Frida’s photography invites the viewer to distill the beauty of the everyday processes and reflect on how we define and position ourselves in this ever-changing world.

NAKHOM RAAVIPHANUN

1993, Thailandnakhom

The Flow of Time in Nature explores the intricate relationship between nature, time, and human emotion, presenting moments where the boundaries between stillness and motion dissolve. Through soft, fluid tones and intimate compositions, I capture fragments of life that speak to the impermanence of existence—the fleeting beauty of a reflection, the delicate texture of aging surfaces, or the quiet tension of solitude.

Each image is rooted in a visceral connection to the moment it was created, often influenced by the interplay of light, shadow, and the emotions I felt at that time. The natural world becomes both a subject and a metaphor—its changes mirroring the flow of time and the transient nature of human experience.

MELISSA DE OLIVEIRA

2000, Brazil

Morro do Dendê - 'Dendê Slum' is a project that document Melissa's experience, recording the daily life of the favela beyond the popular imagination. One of the largest communities in Rio de Janeiro, Morro do Dendê is located in the city's North Zone.

Her photography delves into research into new masculinities, looking at issues such as exhibitionism, collectivity, identity and gender, translating the dynamics of relationships and interactions between men in images. The powerful annual ritual of bleaching hair is the protagonist of her body of work, as it is the main symbol of male vanity in these communities.

Her research also addresses the geographical and political impacts of a favela run by a criminal faction, isolated and outside of the rich Center-South Zone axis, and how these aspects influence the lives of the population of Dendê, an almost mystical community due to its difficult access, located on an island surrounded by a polluted bay.

Dream Within A Dream

Life is a dream, isn’t it? A dream within a dream...

Sometimes it feels like an endless shadow, where peace is a distant echo and the weight of everything presses down. The thought of leaving tempts, but fear keeps you tethered. Maybe that flicker of hesitation is hope—small but enough to guide you through the longest night.

CHANEL VICTOR

1995, France

Nan Goldin was my revelation—the catalyst for my work. Her raw, intimate portraits of friends struck me deeply. I bought my first camera and started capturing my friends and lovers in moments of vulnerability, seeking not just their bodies but their souls. Photography became my way of reconnecting with the world after what Carl Jung calls the "desert of the soul." By capturing others' vulnerability, I confronted my own. I began with Polaroids and collages—pieces making a whole—before falling for the unique beauty of film. Now, I use anything to tell my story.

SINA FARAH AL-BAYATI

2000, Germanyfarah.lee

The term “amygdala“ refers to a small area of the brain within the limbic system, which is involved in emotional responses as well as the storage of memories. At its core, it is concerned with processing negative and challenging emotions and situations.

In my series of the same name “amygdala“, it symbolizes the lifelong inner transformation and directs attention to what is usually hidden: the complexity of emotions, memories, and fears. In my work, I visualize my own imagination and perception of personal memories and influences related to home, tradition, fears, and childhood. The essence of the project lies in the emergence and processing of emotions and raising awareness of the shadows of memory in the subconscious.

The focus is not only on the external, pleasing aspects of identity but also to look deeper revealing the inner tension within the self.

KORAL CARBALLO
1987, Mexico

Blood Summons is a story about the search for identity origin and the oral history of my family. I am the daughter of a mixed race mother and an Afromexican father. A woman searching for the origin of the wounds and the genealogy of colonial violence in the family stories.

These photographs are my family album of the history that no one has told me because of the silence that is a way to survive in Mexico. This history is uncertain in a counter-narrative to the politics of mestizaje (racial assimilation), installed by the Mexican nation-state, which erased and whitewashed with the official narrative of the violence of my ancestors, their impoverishment, misogyny and racism.

These photographs are constructed with the oral accounts of my parents in the present but invoking our ancestors. I activate the personal family archive I find, and re-historicize the intimate stories, creating a constellation of unconnected images that evoke unconscious images linked to memory and the need to belong, to understand the struggles and the need to heal.

CHELSEA PINEDA

1993, The United States

Barako delves into my father’s youth, when he became a serial street fighter to survive in the 1960s-70s Philippines. Amidst an era that glorified the "tough guy," he trained in boxing and combat sports, using his skills to protect himself and others. Fighting was also a way to channel his anger towards his father, who physically disciplined him.

We know of the aggression and dominance associated with the hegemonic masculinity that many young boys and men are conditioned into. But what of the tenderness and curiosities that come with the nature of boyhood? What if that is just as necessary in physical and emotional survival, especially when a boy becomes a man?

TIAGO CASANOVA

1988, Portugal

"A Turtle with a Broken Back” is a photographic essay that portrays the communities and territory of São Tomé and Príncipe facing the challenges of resource scarcity and climate change, in a historical period that marks 50 years of its independence from Portugal.

Each photograph in this project is a testimony to the complex dynamics of local domestic economies, where daily survival is linked to the historical consequences of the colonial past, and to the new challenges that the growth of tourism imposes.
