Urban sprawl is the unrestricted growth in many urban areas of housing, commercial development, and roads over large expanses of land, with little concern for urban planning. In addition to describing a particular form of urbanization, the term also relates to the social and environmental consequences associated with this development. Since the advent of the industrial era, sprawl has entailed no direct disadvantages, such as the loss of protection from medieval city walls. However, its disadvantages and costs include increased travel time, transport costs, pollution, and destruction of countryside.
This concept is also related to our current theme. Perhaps with the clues you can put it together now. DM if you wish you guess.

The gherkin is a very well known landmark, with a natural ventilation system inspired by the fluid dynamics of the Venus flower basket. In practice however, London’s wind flow don’t quite match the dynamics of the ocean floor. The Gherkin isn't featured in our next edition of the CHEPOS, however it is related. Can you guess our theme? Stay tuned for more insights on our next edition.

Such a large amount of newly built and temporary venues does not only support the sports industry, but also touches the built environment. Do you want to know more about this topic? Drawings and sketches show the approach and thoughts behind the grand ideas of architects. When analysing the timeline of drawings by a certain architect, it is possible to discover concepts and recognise obsessions or patterns that architects have had (unconsciously) over time. The same happens in the case of Israeli architect Zvi Hecker.

Do you recognise these cool contemplative cartoons? They are made by Léon Krier, an ideologist entailing a return to the traditional European city, in turn conjuring images of romantically dense, small-scale architecture and walkable streets. Check out the pictorial in the editorial selection, https://issuu.com/chepos_cheops/docs/single_-bundle_1_-_editorial_selection_2020 (also featured in Archdaily.com shorturl.at/gwxCV ).

It might seem very unrealistic, but the chique and fancy shopping streets of Amsterdam were once the silent witnesses of a conflict of a scale never seen in the Netherlands after the second world war. Editor Aron den Otter and guest writer Stefan Aalbersberg elaborate on the battle for affordable living space that took place in Amsterdam in the seventies and eighties. What should be a day of celebration with the coronation of Beatrix, turned out to become on with a battle. Check it out in the newest bundle of the Chepos Magazine!
