A little Q&A with Alarico about the 90's.
Enjoy!

1 - Alarico, can you tell us a bit about yourself and where you’re based and what you're up to?

I’m a 21 years old guy living in Milan, started djing among local clubs and producing at 16 years old, currently studying telecommunication and signal engineering in university.

2 - Do you know anything about the 90’s techno scene in Italy?

Italy (especially southern regions) was quite a melting pot for techno in the 90s.
During that period there were insane artists like Gaetek with his “Conform Records” imprint, Rino Cerrone and Marco Carola.
They used to work together and sharing knowledge in the studio too, as a result some timeless record were done during that time like “Mental dripping” by Gaetek and the infamous “Dual EP” by C&G Southsystem (Carola + Gaetek).

3 - People often say that the late 90’s are the ‘golden era’ of techno, what does this type of techno and period mean to you?

I didn’t have the chance to live this era in its entirety as I was born in 99’ but it’s fair to say that it had an incredible impact for me and it really shaped my sound.

What I love about this period is the complete absence of boundaries due to the fact that the techno genre as we know it was in the making, as a result artists were constantly experimenting and crafting their own style.

To conclude this period is really inspiring for me and strongly shaped my sound, when searching for new inspiration I always dig into those years and rarely in nowadays music.

4 - If you had the chance and could go back to the late 90’s, with whom would you instantly collaborate?

Tough answer, too many good ones but if I have to choose I would pick either Surgeon, Fumiya Tanaka or Soul Destroyaz.

Dj-wise I would love to do a session with Oscar Mulero, I highly recommend to everyone to check his session called “About discipline and education” (1998).

5 - Is there any particular analog equipment you’d love to get your hands on?

I’d love to get my hands on a good old SH-101 by Roland and on an ElecTribe EMX1 by Korg.

6 - What is your workflow for creating these amazing tracks? Are you fully analog or is it all in the box?

The “Raw Cuts” tracks were done using both hardware and software equipment.
Cut 1 is entirely done in Ableton same for Cut 2.
On the other hand Cut 3 and Cut 4 have synths line that I recorded with a Korg Minologue xd and then processed in Ableton.

Despite having hardware equipment, the more I produce the more I found myself more creative using samples as the main source for a synth line or a pad.
Instead of having a VST replica of a famous synthesizer I prefer using a sampler where I can put a sample in it and then messing around with effects and so on.

7 - What’s one of your favorite tracks of this period?

Another tough one. I have too many and too different one from each other.
I’ll pick 3 tracks that never stops inspiring me:

Robert Hood - Detroit: One Circle [Metroplex]
Pacou - H Drive [Tresor]
Oscar Mulero - Brno [Kobayashi]

8 - At last, what would your advice be for any young producer out there?

My biggest advice for young producers (friendly remind to myself) is to craft your own unique style without being afraid of exaggerating, there isn’t a right path or a wrong one when it comes to production and lastly don’t be a copycat, the ones you copy will always be 10 steps ahead of you.

The first full artist EP on OOM Records comes from Italy based Alarico. Raw Cuts contains four tracks that breath the sound of the late 90's. Cut 1 starts off in full pace with a rolling sequenced bass topped with hefty beats and haunting movements. Second track Cut 2 continuous the fast paced character, but this time with some smart layered Pizzicato strings and some haunting voice effects to complete it all. Cut 3 offers a filtered sequenced bass that opens up from time to time, again with hefty beats and subtle pads. Closing track Cut 4 is based on a shimmy fast groove topped with 909 beats, some continuous shakers and atmospheric elements. An absolute fire debut by Alarico.

Endorse (OOM002) is out now!
With legends Cari Lekebusch, Jeroen Search, CRAVO and Ichizo.

What's the best way to embrace the 90's? By actually releasing a track produced in 1998. That's the year Cari Lekebusch released this track on his label H-Productions. With a remastered version this timeless piece leads the EP. Stomping beats, saturated filtered stabs and an energetic groove are the top ingredients cooked by the master himself. Ichizo is 2nd on the VA. With Vale Zero he produces a fast paced groove that is ready for any dance floor. A tireless sequence is leading the way, supported by heavy kicks and 4x4 claps. On the flipside we'll find another master from the past. Jeroen Search dived into his archives to find this stunner track Oscuros, produced in the 90's as well. Hear it to believe it. CRAVO closed the VA with an outstanding percussion and loopy based ode to the 90's.

Short Q&A with Sev Dah about the late 90's!

1: People often say that the late 90’s are the ‘golden era’ of techno, what does this type of techno and period mean to you?
Sev Dah: In my case the late 90s were the period where i discovered techno. I dont want to say that this period was the best - its a taste-opinion, but it was the 90s that created the path where i am standing today as an artist. If you compare that period with todays techno you can hear that music was made for other reasons and it had more energy since it wanted to create a statement of freedom. Again - its all a question about taste, but the late 90s are where i take my inspiration for my own techno for sure.

2: If you had the chance and could go back to the late 90’s, with who would you instantly collaborate?
Sev Dah: That question is not hard to answer :) I have two artists in mind.

Umek - because in my opinion Uros had the most creative but still so simple and revolutionary way of creating sequences and puting the funk into techno

Advent - Cisco is still one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to beat creating.

3: What’s one of your favorite tracks of this period?
Sev Dah: There are really many, but as i stated in my answers above its pretty obvious that i like almost everything Umek and The Advent created during that period.
I would point out the following tunes that inspired me most:

Surgeon - Intro (Version II)
CJ Bolland - Carmage (Not late 90s,but still one of the best tracks ever in my opinion)
Holy Ghost - Hand of God (The Advent Remix)
Umek - Difolvon EP

TWR72 rings in OOM Records with Simplex, a fast driven loopy track supported by a rolling sequenced bass line and intense orchestral elements. It’s vibrant, dark and haunting. UBX127 is 2nd on the VA. With Shifters he produced the perfect ode to the 90’s. UBX127 is very familiar with the golden era as he played numerous gigs during that time. Shifters contains fierce rhythms, heavy claps, swinging snares, a sturdy bass line and tight stabs. On the flip-side Sev Dah finds his way on to the VA. A beat driving track full of cheeky rhythms and loads of energy is what Futura stands for. Temudo closes the VA with an energetic percussion based loopy track called Blo-rei. A subtle melody is swaying throughout the 5 minutes of pure fire.
