Wanda is more than a character in Rise of the Mafu—she is the heart of the story.

She was our sister, co-author, and inspiration. Her rare gift for creating stories made people feel seen and valued. Wanda’s deep passion for connecting others and celebrating Afro-Caribbean culture shaped every part of this project.

Tragically, Wanda passed away at just 36, leaving Rise of the Mafu unfinished. Her loss was devastating, but her spirit drives us forward. We promised her we would complete these stories, and through this graphic novel, Wanda’s creativity and resilience live on—not only as inspiration but as one of the main characters in the narrative.

This project is our way of preserving her legacy, honoring the lessons of our heritage, and sharing untold African and Caribbean legends. Rise of the Mafu is more than a story; it’s a call to embrace your culture, explore your roots, and find strength in your voice.

Thinking back to the special programs on December 5th, 7th, and 8th, they were a testament to the power of reclaiming our stories.
Through every panel, performance, and conversation, we affirmed the importance of telling our history - but more importantly, our futures - on our terms. From Carla Kabamba’s opening spoken word performance to the electrifying discussions on Afrofuturism, feminism, and Black narratives, every moment was a step toward reimagining and redefining the future.

This gathering was more than an event; it was a call to action for the Afrofuturist movement to continue inspiring, educating, and building a brighter tomorrow.

We Did It – Together! And We're Just Getting Started

Between the 5th and 8th of December, Amsterdam became the center of a global movement. Over three unforgettable days, creatives, scholars, and visionaries from the global North and South gathered at the Shared History of the World special program to reimagine the future through the lens of Afrofuturism. Thinkers and creators from 10 different countries came together, each contributing their unique perspectives to this collective journey.

Together, we explored how to reclaim our narratives through panels such as Future of Society, led by Dr. Reynaldo Anderson (USA), Yvonne Apiyo Brändle-Amolo- Gemeindeparlamentarierin (Switzerland), and Dr. Natasha A. Kelly (Germany); Comic & Hip Hop Culture, featuring Stacey Robinson (USA), Juice Aleem (UK), Dj sueside (Netherlands), and Gerald Vreden (Netherlands); and Gaming Culture & Afrofuturism, with Lucid Belle (Netherlands), Guilherme Henrique Xavier (Brazil), and Fredy Mena Andrade (Colombia).

Lightning talks brought fresh insights into culture, AI, and technology, with inspiring contributions from speakers like Quentin VerCetty Made It Studios (Canada) and Stacey Robinson (USA). Each segment brought us closer to our shared purpose: envisioning a future rooted in our heritage.

The Shared History of the World exhibition, the three incredible days of conferences, the collaboration with the Black Speculative Arts Movement (BSAM -> Afrofuturism 2.0 & The Black Speculative Arts Movement / BSAM Brasil ), the launch of our Dutch chapter, and the simultaneous Kickstarter and Voordekunst campaigns all made this an event for the history books.

Keep an eye out for more recap posts, but for now, we are deeply grateful to all who attended, whether in person or in spirit. This was more than just an event; it was the next step in an extraordinary global movement. Thank you to everyone who traveled from across the globe to make this a historic moment. We look forward to next year when we can all come together again.
