THE WORLD'S 1ST AI GALLERY CHALLENGES THE CONCEPT OF 'THE SOUL'.
Of course AI doesn't have 'a soul'. Neither do you. But, interestingly, AI does share a lot in common with the concept of 'soul'. Both 'the soul' and 'artificial intelligence' have proven to be ingenious and highly impactful creations by very intelligent individuals, giving rise to highly profitable industries such as 'religion' and 'AI artistry'. So, can you imagine how I am constantly amazed when people insist on making the false distinction between Artificial Intelligence and Biological Intelligence through 'the soul' argument?
A long, long, long, lóng time ago, with the invention of the concept of 'the soul,' it became childishly simple to control and manipulate naive and gullible people by promising them an eternity in paradise or threatening them with hell, depending on what suited you best. Sounds pretty silly, right?
Today we know better. When someone leaves a LinkedIn comment saying, "Go to hell with your !" both the person making the threat and the one receiving it, know that such a curse is merely an empty, meaningless gesture. A curse like this tends to harm the reputation of the issuer more than the recipient.
Nevertheless, pioneers continue to be pulled into pointless debates about 'the soullessness' of AI-created art, as they explore the possibilities of Generative AI...
Unlike artists in fields like collage (Harald Vlugt), fashion/architecture/pop photography, or synth/sampler music - who openly reuse existing materials, AI-art pioneers face absurd arguments based on complete ignorance of technology (no, nothing is copied, nothing is stolen). Interesting times indeed.
I look forward to seeing you at the exhibition opening tomorrow, at Dead End AI Gallery. Which will - besides art from its founders Constant Brinkman and Paul Bookelman - feature work from a diverse group of artists including Arno Coenen, Dɑvid Vijsmɑ ★, Mostafa Heravi, Bas Waijers, Dimitry van den Berg, Dimitri van der Werf, Suzyonekenobi, Irisa Nova, Jaxon Nash, Lily Chen, Serenity Rayne, myself—★ Rodger Werkhoven—and Maxime Dupont.
Dr. Maarten Lamers, associated with Leiden University, will inaugurate the exhibition with a speech that promises to add significant insights to the conversation on art and AI. And I will play you some soulless electronic music styles. Hope to see you there, tomorrow, April 19th, at 4:00 PM, Dead End Gallery, Oude Braak 16a, 1012PS Amsterdam.
