A delicate Benelux Rail jubilee refrigerator van

This year it is 45 years ago that work for the Benelux Rail books (ten editions published so far) and maps (fourth edition is ready to go to press now) was started. It happened in the restaurant of the former Liège Guillemins station. Founders were from Luxemburg, Belgium, The Netherlands and Sweden.
We reflect on this event now with this specially designed refrigerated van in a limited and one-time edition of 400. This wagon 45020.006 is not part of the regular Märklin catalogue.

Out now: The Station. An Antwerp Tale

The Antwerp railway station, which opened in 1905, is one of the world’s majestic eclectic public buildings. Even with its impressive canopy, however, it is more than purely an architectural masterpiece. And thus the U.S.-born writer Alexandra Richardson, who lives in London, set about weaving a tale centred around both real and fictional individuals who played their special roles in the creative process of erecting this iconic edifice. From the forgotten years leading up to the all-shadowing Great War, the author etches a picture of those times through her various story lines. We now know more fully why a railway cathedral rose in this city along the Scheldt, at the end of a lofty ‘walkway of city tracks.’ More importantly, though, why that railway hub immediately became a turning point for human fortunes.
The Station. An Antwerp Tale by Alexandra Richardson. Graphic design Maud van Rossum, English language. ISBN/EAN 978-90-73280-017-5, paperback, 176 pages. € 19.00.

In 1977 the first meeting to produce the series of Benelux Rail books and maps took place in the former railway station of Liege Guillemins. Now 45 years on, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate.

Biologische tram.

The town of Le Havre was demolished during the Second World War. It was rebuilt using a master plan for the lay out and architecture. The rubble of the old town centre was recycled as modern building material. There are green lungs in town, places for the children to play safely, paths to cycle. That part of town is also affordable especially for the original inhabitants being one of the main goals of the project. These efforts were later acknowledged and the new city became an Unesco world heritage site.
When Le Havre reintroduced the tram as a modern urban transport system in 2012 it was decided not to paint the vehicles in carnival colours but in a way they would match their surroundings. Find the two long articulated Citadis trams on the photo taken at Jardins de l'Hotel de Ville and you know what I mean.
Tram stops also feature works of art the stop of Saint Roch featuring a sculpture by the Eindhoven artist Henk Visch. Recommended is the Musee d'art Moderne Andre Malraux.
Places to eat: Orchidee and La Petite Auberge.

A nice place to relax when staying in for instance Le Havre is Honfleur in the Normandy. Plenty of sea food available and you know ... they know how to turn an apple into a digestive perfectly over there.

Since my Weston Light meter was restored to full working order last summer the old Rolleiflex 2.8 (1952) is in full service again. The solution is found with Ian Partridge of Colchester UK. He revives old Weston meticulously for a reasonable price. Recommended.

A new auction for historical Portugese railway black&white negatives (35 mm PanF and FP4) started two days ago. Like before there is a lot of interest. A pleasant surprise and at the end of next week we will offer more shots for auction at Ebay uk.

For those who seek to restore their (one famous) Weston light meter I have an address in the UK I can recommend as well: Ian Partride. Not only the selenium cell will be replaced/restored to full working order. All mechanical problems are solved at the same time for a reasonable price. That's how I could reintroduce the Rolleflex last summer which is taking fine pictures especially with the famous Fuji Velvia 50 film available again.

Received my 28 mm Leica Elmarit which went out of focus a few weeks ago. Can happen to a veteran lens. Is in mint condition again thanks to Wil van Manen Camera repair in Zoetermeer. As always repaired well in time for a acceptable price. Recommended for all analog photo equipment.
