The European pig industry faces increased diarrhea rates and compromised growth after the ban on zinc oxide. APCโ€™s functional plasma proteins offer a natural solution, enabling diets with higher protein levels without risking diarrhoea. Trials show reduced mortality, improved performance, and enhanced animal welfare, addressing the regulatory shift toward reduced antimicrobial use.

Javier Polo, SR. Vice President and Victor Deike, Director of Sales & Marketing โ€“ EMEA will explain more about APCโ€™s solutions in the video on our website!

A long-established feeding practice in the farrowing room is the provision of โ€œcreep feed,โ€ which means the provision of feed to piglets while they are suckling the sow. Now what are the benefits? Animal nutrition expert Dr Francesc Molist of Schothorst Feed Research explains that creep feed provision is hypothesised toโ€ฆ

Pig market analyst John Strak wrote in October 2024 that; โ€œWeek-to-week price changes for the global index have been negative since early July and there are few signs in the data that this situation will change. The trend is clear โ€“ the cycle is definitely in a downward phase.โ€
Within a few weeks of writing that โ€“ by mid-October โ€“ that trend had been reversed and it has maintained a positive direction since. So much for his crystal ball. He now wonders: how did I get the signals from the data so wrong? And what does 2025 hold for pig and pork prices?

Around one-third to half of the sow population gets replaced, meaning that millions of sows are going for slaughter every year. Reasons may include low performance, lameness, illness, injuries or undesired behaviour. Often, cull sows are in poor condition when they are sent to slaughter. Pig welfare expert Dr Irene Camerlink therefore asks the following question: at what point is it better to euthanise the sow on-farm rather than to put her on a truck?

Poultry and pork appeared to be in short supply in the Primorsk region, the most populated part of the Russian Far East. A series of African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks registered in this part of the country in the previous years is partly to blame.

Some say that, in order to save the planet, mankind had better focus on becoming totally independent of livestock. Pigs, poultry and cattle, however, have an important role to play in order to achieve a truly circular economy โ€“ after all, what to do with leftovers of food production?

Throughout her career in product development, improving feed efficiency or ADG had always been a clear measure of success. These metrics, which once defined innovation, paved the way for the widespread adoption of feed enzymes in swine diets. However, the landscape of animal nutrition is evolving, writes nutrition technology expert Dr Casey Bradley. So what is new?

It is the opposite of micromanaging โ€“ just let everybody get on with their job and as long as the end result is decent, everything is decent. So why not do that with pigs? After all, a pig carcass can tell a lot about the welfare conditions the animal lived in when it was alive. A current EU-funded project looks into practical solutions along those lines...
