Did you know that many cities in the Netherlands have an 'Indische' neighbourhood, with streetnames referring to the former Dutch East Indies? These days not all streetnames are welcomed however. Recently the city of Amsterdam refused to name a street the 'Nutmeg-street' because of the reference to colonial times and the serious battles that were fought to gain control over the spice trade.
But there are alternatives! The city of Almere for example has chosen these names.

Researchers from the Dutch International Institute of Social History (IISH) have presented a database called Exploring Slave Trade in Asia, which maps Asian slavery history in a never-before-seen way. This database provides insight into more than 4,000 slave trade voyages using an interactive map. Much of the map contains information about the Dutch East Indies Company and Dutch colonized areas, but there is also information about the French and British slave trade. The map opens doors for new research and education.

The Zeeuws Veilinghuis (auction house) in Middelburg in the Dutch province of Zeeland, has been specialized in auctioning paintings from the former Dutch East Indies for years. They are, in their own words, a global player in this field and number one in Europe.
In recent years, if you look at the value, more than 90% of the paintings from the former Dutch East Indies have been auctioned at the Zeeuws Veilinghuis.

And the auction house does more than just auction art. It also recently published the biography 'Rudolf Bonnet - Beauty remains' (English language), about the life and work of the Amsterdam painter Rudolf Bonnet. His father was a baker, but the young Rudolf had a different future in mind: he wanted to become an artist. He succeeded in this after successfully completing two art courses.
In the 1920s, many artists went to Bali to paint. Bonnet also settled in Ubud in 1929, then a small village, which has since grown into an important center for art in Bali.
Bonnet worked extensively with the German painter Walter Spies. He inspired young artists and provided them with better materials. Bonnet and Spies became very involved in social and cultural life. Both also played an important role in the establishment of the Bali Museum in Denpasar. In 1937 they founded the Pita Maha association to preserve Balinese heritage.
Rudolf Bonnet died in 1978 in Laren, the Netherlands. His ashes were scattered in Bali.

'Rudolf Bonnet – beauty remains' costs €64.95. If you want to order the book you can send an email to: [email protected]

On February 17th SoCal Indo and Paguyuban Jawa Plus USA will hold a Charity Pasar Malam at the AVIO in Anaheim, CA. Last summer, Michael Passage and his wife visited an orphanage in Semarang, a school in Denpasar and the Indo Club in Surabaya where they donated funds on behalf of both organizations.
With the Charity Pasa Malam they hope to raise more funds for extra rooms in the orphanage, computers in school and medicin for the elderly Indos.
Of course there will be food, music and fun things to shop for at the Pasar. ✨

Dear all,
First let us apologize for the tremendous delay in sending out this edition… As you may or may not know, Indo International is made by a very small team. And both personal and professional circumstances have lead to this late publication and we do sincerely apologize.
We have made this and all the other Moesson Internationals and Indo Internationals with love and dedication. It is therefore with great sadness that we have to announce that this is the final edition of the Indo International. For three years we have tried to build up a steady base of subscribers, but unfortunately at this time there are not enough subscribers to cover the costs.
Over the past years, the content of the magazine has been greatly appreciated. And I would like to thank you for all for your support and the compliments we have received over the years. And also for all the content – because you have provided us with many wonderful articles.
But unfortunately, we have also had many struggles. We tried to set up a payment system that worked for our overseas subscribers, even set up a new website, but it remained difficult.
International shipping is extremely costly, and on top of that, paper prices have gone up tremendously.
All in all the costs do not outweigh the benefits and it is with pain in my heart that I must say that we can no longer keep the publication running. So this is the final Indo International.
We hope the mailman will deliver the paper edition of the magazine soon. But because we did not want to keep you waiting any longer, we decided to send everyone this digital copy. (Except, unfortunalely, for those subscribers who do not have email.)
I do hope you have enjoyed our publication. And please don’t stop passing on our Indo culture and be proud of our heritage. We will keep on publishing our Dutch magazine Moesson. Poekoel teroes!
And if you have any questions, please contact us at: [email protected]
Vivian Boon, editor-in-chief

Update:
The fall edition of Indo International
will be sent out this week.
In an effort to make up a little bit for the delay, all subscribers who have shared their email address with us, will receive a digital copy in the mail.
We will also send everyone a paper edition - but that will take a little longer in the mail.

We are deeply sorry it has taken so long to publish this edition. Many different circumstances have led to this delay.
We do apologize and thank you for your patience. 💙

Recently a special committee lead by former Dutch Education minister Jet Bussemaker, stated that we should consider no longer using the terms Indisch and ‘former Dutch East Indies’. This statement prompted Indo-Dutch Stephen Goedhart, who lives in Taiwan, to write the following argument against the committees findings.

You can read the whole opinion on our website: https://www.indo-international.nl/read/1498182_preserving-our-identity-the-former-dutch-east-indies-and-indisch

Guido Schenkhuizen is currently documenting his life's story. It's not a war story but rather a tale of his mischievous adventures in the Dutch East Indies, going to the movies and running through sugarcane fields. He writes it down in English for his cousins, so they can see what life was like in the Dutch East Indies. But while writing, Guido was confronted with another view of his golden childhood, which raised many new questions.

Indo International visited Guido in sunny Azusa. You can read the full interview on our website via this link: https://www.indo-international.nl/read/1498110_forever-in-between

Djarisah (1180-1971) was not only a professional midwife but a woman with modern, emancipated ideas about the position of Indigenous women. This, in a nutshell, was the essence of her working life: women were to elevate themselves through education. She herself was a shining example of what she preached.

You can read her story in the April edition of Indo International. Via the link in bio you can purchase your own (digital) copy.

Countless Moluccans and Indo-Dutch people who came to the Netherlands in the 1950s suffered from tuberculosis. Many were already distributed among Dutch sanatoriums before their arrival, others soon after. There, they often spent years in quarantine and that was hard on them. Especially for the mothers who had to miss their children all that time.

You can read the full story in the april edition of Indo International.

Griselda Molemans spent ten years researching the Japanese system of forced prostitution between 1932 and 1945, resulting in her book 'Levenslang Oorlog'.
And it didn't just stop at a book. Griselda's fight for justice for the victims of this system recently led her to South Korea. Based on her research, there will also be a monument in Amsterdam in memory of the victims in the Dutch East Indies.

In Indo International, she talks about her trip to Korea, research, and the monument.

On February 8th after intensive research, the Dutch Committee on Strengthening Knowledge of the History of the Former Dutch East Indies presented a report with strong recommendations to the cabinet. The history of the former Dutch East Indies must be given a more prominent place in education and in society. The information about it must also be accessible online. These recommendations will, if followed, surely improve general knowledge about the Dutch East Indies. But the committee also raised some eyebrows when presenting their report.

At 81 Bert Strüwer traveled with his daughter to Indonesia, his homeland. To revisit the country of his youth, the country where he has known happiness and hardship. And although this was not the first time he went back there, this visit helped him to make peace with the past and experience the trip as coming home.

Have you read his story yet in the new Indo International?

When someone dies, they leave behind a legacy, an imprint passed down from generation to generation. What remains are the memories of who that person was, what they did in life, and how they made you feel. For Kayla Smith, this is how her Opa has existed in her mind since his death in 2006.

You can read the whole article in our new Indo International issue.
