Internationally acclaimed Norwegian trumpeter takes you back to childhood with new album Lullaby. Pre-show by the Lyder Røed Quintet.

Mathias Eick, one of the most recognizable voices in Norwegian jazz, is known for his melodic compositions and distinctive, atmospheric trumpet sound. As both a soloist and bandleader, he continues to refine his approach. His latest album Lullaby (2024) explores universal memories of childhood through emotional and introspective music. The quintet performing this work features Håkon Aase (violin), Torstein Lofthus (drums), Andreas Ulvo (piano), and Audun Erlien (bass), each contributing their unique sound to Eick’s compositions.

Eick’s ensemble brings together a blend of genres and influences, from folk traditions to classical and experimental jazz. Aase’s improvisations and Lofthus’ dynamic drumming add depth to Eick’s melodic storytelling, while Ulvo’s lyrical piano style and Erlien’s soul-infused grooves complete the rich, textured sound. Together, they create an intimate yet powerful experience, with Lullaby serving as a testament to Eick’s ongoing artistic evolution and his ability to connect deeply with listeners.

Pianist from New York honors six women who have shaped her as a musician.

‘For all its freshness and innovation, Davis’ music is precisely and unmistakably the sound of today’, says Downbeat Magazine about pianist Kris Davis. On her new album Run the Gauntlet she pays homage to six trailblazing women who have left an indelible mark on her journey as a pianist and composer: Geri Allen, Carla Bley, Renee Rosnes, Angelica Sanchez, Marilyn Crispell, and Sylvie Courvoisier. Like Davis, they are known for their groundbreaking improvisational playing. Davis will perform with the musicians who can be heard on the album, bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Johnathan Blake.

Kris Davis recently made waves with her inventive album Diatom Ribbons (Live at the Village Vanguard) featuring DJ Val Jeanty on turntables, Julian Lage on guitar, Trevor Dunn on bass and Terri Lyne Carrington on drums. The project could previously be heard on our stage. The pianist also played on Carrington’s Grammy-winning album New Standards Vol. 1. Time and again she manages to surprise with new bands and throughout the years she has performed with the likes of Ingrid Laubrock, Esperanza Spalding, John Zorn en Dave Holland.

Travel through culture and history with Brazilian saxophonist

Candomblé is more than a concert—it is an invitation for reflection and dialogue. Saxophonist Lucas Santana wrote the music for the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, and his point of departure was the African diaspora in South America. Stories are conveyed through music on the basis of four pillars: Remember, Reflect, Acknowledge and Celebrate. In this way the performance creates room for conversations about culture, history and identity, themes that often remain undiscussed.

Lucas Figueiredo Santana, a versatile Brazilian saxophone, clarinet and flute player, has been based in Amsterdam since 2015. His music combines influences of Brazilian styles such as samba and bossa nova with the expressive qualities of jazz. Lucas has previously won the Keep an Eye The Records Award.

Saxophone legend presents new quartet with top young musicians from New York.

With his new quartet, saxophone legend David Murray breathes new life into his music, reinforced by a group of leading musicians from the New York jazz scene. Pianist Marta Sanchez, bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Russell Carter form a dynamic ensemble that perfectly matches Murray’s playful ferocity and passion. Murray himself describes the quartet as a group of young, creative musicians looking to reach the top – an outstanding band that takes his adventurous sounds to new heights.

Since his New York debut in 1975, Murray has been known for his powerful, quirky playing style and unique way of improvising. With deep roots in African-American music history – from swing and gospel to avant-garde jazz and rhythm ‘n’ blues – he has made his mark on the jazz world. He has collaborated with icons such as the World Saxophone Quartet, McCoy Tyner and Henry Threadgill.

In the BIMHUIS Productions series REFLEX we invite musicians to reflect on the world and society. The curator of this edition is alto saxophonist Mo van der Does. His vision will be shaped by his seven-piece Motet, through which he is displaying influences from the likes of Charles Mingus, Maurice Ravel en heroes of contemporary jazz.

Motet is the seven-piece formation led by Mo van der Does, who has earned acclaim for his tone, his lyricism and his improvisational skills. His band features major talents from Dutch scene and beyond. The group can be as flexible as a small ensemble and as powerful as a big band, while exploring composition, orchestration and improvisation.

Through long lasting friendships and musical connections these musicians have built up a mutual trust that allows them to go all the way on stage. Their sonic world is characterized by lyrical melodies and strong grooves, while interchanging intimate, melancholic parts with orchestral eruptions.

Rich ensemble of lyrical saxophonist presents new album (In)finity.

Infinity can evoke an overwhelming feeling. A sense of freedom or, conversely, of fear. Your understanding of infinity grows with your view of the world from childhood. These questions are the starting point of the music Kika made for her latest album with her Large Ensemble called (In)finity. The music is supported by a light installation by designer Sander Hagelaar. In the interaction between music and light, the musicians and Sander depict and visualise the themes of transience, infinity and the human perception of time.

In the current composition of the Large Ensemble, Sprangers looks even more for the player behind the instrument. Her Large Ensemble includes some of the most outspoken soloists of the Dutch jazz scene representing the unique and strong sound of the young generation. Kika excels in her compositions for this chamber jazz line-up with the perfect blend of vocals with horns, while giving room for the momentum in which the musicians flourish in improvisations.

Acclaimed saxophone and clarinet player celebrates his birthday with a new, large and diverse ensemble.

45 years ago he already gave his first concert at the BIMHUIS, together with cellist Ernst Reijseger and drummer Michael Vatcher. Just a year before that, Michael Moore arrived in Amsterdam for the first time. Since then he has regularly performed on our stage every year, in all kinds of formations. Familiar names and new acquaintances from the Amsterdam scene return in his new seven-piece ensemble. What continues to drive him is his curiosity about music, especially music he does not yet comprehend, music with a lot of freedom and music in which players are aware that everything can change completely at the drop of a hat.

Alto sax and clarinet player Michael Moore is renowned all over the world for his beautiful tone and his rich musical imagination. He grew up in Northern California, studied at the conservatory with Jaki Byard, George Russell, Joe Maneri, Ran Blake and Günther Schuller, and spent two years in New York before he made his move to Amsterdam. He is a fixture of the Amsterdam improv scene, as a writing member of ICP Orchestra and as the leader of his own bands. He has collaborated with many greats, including Lee Konitz, Dave Douglas and Fred Hersch.

Flamenco-jazzpianist is bringing together a sextet of top musicians with various musical backgrounds, from the Netherlands to Iran, Austria to Armenia.

Daniel García Diego is one of today’s most exciting Spanish jazz pianists. With his trio, he made his debut at the Flamenco Biennial Netherlands in 2021, the online and live edition of the festival. Since then he has been conquering jazz stages worldwide. ‘Jazz and flamenco are brothers’, he says. And he proves it on the acclaimed albums Travesuras and Vía de la Plata. In his expressive style, rhythmic intensity goes hand in hand with melodic richness and harmonic finesse. With the project ‘The Shape of Fire’ he pursues new musical paths. He is bringing together a sextet of top musicians with various musical backgrounds, from the Netherlands to Iran, Austria to Armenia – and Spain of course.

“The Shape of Fire refers to the soul, the energy or fire that glows at the core of all music aiming to convey human emotions and life experiences,” says Daniel García Diego. “Music possesses the power to connect with the inner self and transform it into art. Whether it originates from flamenco, jazz, contemporary music, or Armenian folk songs, music arises from a necessity to express the unfathomable.”

In this edition of DATSKAT, we present the talented alto saxophonist Braxton Cook, an Emmy Award-winning artist and one of the most exciting voices of his generation.

As a Juilliard graduate, he became a member of Christian Scott’s band and has also performed on tours with Christian McBride, Jon Batiste, Marquis Hill , and popular musicians such as Rihanna and Mac Miller. In 2017, Cook was hailed by Fader as a “jazz prodigy.” Shortly thereafter, in 2018, Ebony named him one of the top five jazz artists to watch (alongside Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, Butcher Brown, and Kris Bowers).

As a bandleader, he has five albums to his credit, the most recent being Who Are You When No One Is Watching from 2023. At BIMHUIS, With his mix of genres and deeply emotional performances, he has carved out a unique position in the music world. Whether playing solo or collaborating with other top artists, Cook continues to surprise and inspire with his innovative approach to music.

Grammy-winning pianist celebrates his new album on GroundUp Music with an absolute star formation.

With his previous album Tree Falls, Taylor Eigsti won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. Earlier this year the American pianist released the follower Plot Armor, a diverse, richly orchestrated album full of stylistic twists and turns. Now he presents his compositions together with absolute star players of American jazz including singer Gretchen Parlato and saxophonist Ben Wendel, who can also be heard on the album.

Taylor Eigsti released his first album at age fourteen. He has been celebrating success ever since as a solo artist, and accompanying major pop and jazz artists, from John Mayer and Sting to Dave Brubeck, Esperanza Spalding and Joshua Redman. He also became a member of Terence Blanchard’s E-Collective. Plot Armor was released on GroundUp Records, the label founded by Snarky Puppy band leader Michael League.

The fifth BIMHUIS Composition assignment, during our 50th birthday, has been awarded to composer-conductor Tijn Wybenga.With his Brainteaser method, band leader and sound wizard Tijn Wybenga invented a way to capture the new jazz generation in music. To celebrate fifty years of BIMHUIS he will present his renewed orchestra, plus special guests from the outer limits of music. Expect recycled samples, electronics, orchestral grooves, wild improv and spacey soundscapes.

As our Nieuwe Maker, Tijn Wybenga took the opportunity to seize the essence of the current BIMHUIS community. The Brainteaser Orchestra (formerly AM.OK) reflects a new generation that defies categorization. The music has all been written with the Brainteaser method: recording live improvisations of band members and guest soloists, cutting and pasting hundreds of samples from those recordings and restructuring them in new ways, into new compositions. While Wybenga’s approach is unabashed and playful, the orchestra reveals a great promise for the future.

‘A compelling tapestry. Tijn Wybenga, an unapologetic bandleader, steers the ship with fervor through an odyssey that defies categorization. Rejecting the constraints of rigid genre descriptions, the ensemble explores heavy grooves, mesmerizing ballads, and ethereal soundscapes. Anything is conceivable as Wybenga propels his crew towards the next horizon, embracing the freedom to traverse diverse musical landscapes’ (Jazz in Europe).

Ahead of the concert there will be an introductory talk with moderator Hasna El Maroudi and Tijn Wybenga about innovations in music, organised by Vrijdenkersfestival. The talk starts at 7:30 PM and will be in Dutch. Admission to this part of the program is free.

New ensemble with six prominent improv musicians from Europe and the US

In the BIMHUIS Productions series REFLEX we invite musicians to reflect on the world and society. The curator of this edition is pianist Marta Warelis. She formed a group with well-known improvising musicians from various cities including Amsterdam and Chicago. They depart from silence, elements of folk and deep grooves, towards freedom and transformation.

In this new band, Marta Warelis places her piano and synthesizer opposite the clarinets of Karen Ng and Ab Baars and the trumpet of Ben Lamar Gay, which appears as a singing voice. The fundament is laid by bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and drummer Frank Rosaly.

Marta Warelis has a strong preference for improvisation and experiment in all kinds of styles. She continuously aims for instant composing on the basis of new sounds and influences. The Polish-born improviser explores the timbral possibilities of the acoustic piano on the one hand, and the electronic synthesizer on the other. Since 2019 she’s part of the Amsterdam-based improv collective Doek.

Tribute to Piet Noordijk by virtuoso alto saxophonists from Europe.

In October 2024, thirteen years have passed since Piet Noordijk died. From Rotterdam pubs to large halls with the Metropole Orchestra, he captivated with his effervescent saxophone playing, making him one of the tastemakers of Dutch jazz. Three outstanding alto saxophonists – Benjamin Herman, Sean Payne and Miguel Valente – pay tribute to their famous colleague, accompanied by pianist Francesca Tandoi, double bassist Matheus Nicolaiewsky and drummer Sander Smeets during this fourth edition of the European Alto Festival.

With the festival, Benjamin Herman wants to bring great alto saxophonists from other European countries to Dutch audiences. ‘There are so many great European musicians who are invisible to jazz lovers in nearby countries. I really enjoy being able to bring these crazy saxophonists the The Netherlands. They play so amazing, you don’t know what you’re hearing.’ Says Benjamin Herman.

Young Brit Sean Payne is a much sought-after saxophonist in the UK, who released his debut album in 2023. At the age of 13, he already entered the final of the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year, and has since performed as a sideman and/or bandleader at venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, Vortex and The Royal Albert Hall. Saxophonist Miguel Valente studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and has performed on our stage on several occasions, including the Marmoucha Orchestra, M.A.S.T and NAUSYQA, who have just released their debut album.

In the past fifty years our venue has been an axis an international network of musicians who prioritize freedom, improvisation and independence. Oscar Jan Hoogland celebrates this with twelve international top players who epitomize the spirit of the BIMHUIS.

In a variety of line-ups they celebrate the BIMHUIS-sound, such as Misha Mengelberg’s mischievous swing, Senegalese vocals, the Chicago scene, crackling electronics, Sean Bergin’s South African kwelas, free improvisation alongside challenging composition, the wayward The Ex, sultry Ethiopian melodies, latin grooves and jazz by grandmasters such as Monk, Ellington and Sun Ra.

Oscar Jan Hoogland is a leading figure in the Amsterdam improv scene. As Misha Mengelberg’s last student, he has strong ties to the history that is related to fifty years of BIMHUIS. Especially for this concert he formed a supergroup in which he plays piano and electric clavichord.

On 1 October it will be exactly 50 years ago that the BIMHUIS opened. This month we will look back and ahead into the future. On the opening night we welcome two internationally recognized saxophone players. First we welcome Dutch pride Tineke Postma, who will present her new band, followed by the new star from the motherland of jazz, James Brandon Lewis, who will share the stage with drum genius Chad Taylor. A grandiose start of a packed anniversary month!

Lyrical, melodic and full of groove and emotion: this is how Tineke Postma’s style is being described. She achieved acclaim across the pond as well, collaborating with the legends who inspired her, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, and with famous peers such as Esperanza Spalding and Terri Lyne Carrington. As a band leader she released two albums on the international jazz label Editions Records, Freya and Aria. Especially for this opening concert she will present her new band with star players from all over Europe.

James Brandon Lewis has already received the highest praise from his role model Sonny Rollins, and has proved himself to be a perfect addition to the tenor saxophone hall of fame. Albert Ayler’s spirituality and John Coltrane’s cosmic aspirations have inspired him, but the New York-based saxophonist mainly stays grounded in the present. He leads a trio, a quartet, and he made an album on Impulse! Records with The Messthetics, featuring ex-members of Fugazi. He’s also part of the latest band of trumpet icon Dave Douglas. Especially for our anniversary, James Brandon Lewis will arrive from the US together with drummer Chad Taylor, known from Chicago Underground Duo.

In the BIMHUIS Productions series REFLEX we invite musicians to reflect on the world and society. Saxophonist Nicolò Ricci grabs the opportunity to fulfil his lifelong dream of composing for a chamber orchestra. ‘This is something I have been fantasizing about,’ he says. ‘Composing has always been a primary aspect of music making for me, influenced by my father, a contemporary classical composer who exposed me to the great classical masters, the Italian avant-garde, and his own compositions from a young age.’

The chamber orchestra will collaborate with Ricci’s jazz quartet, which emphasizes improvisation. ‘As an improviser, I’ve come to view the process of creating a personal language as akin to composition – a patient selection or creation of musical elements that contribute to expanding one’s vocabulary,’ he says. Nicolò Ricci was born in Italy and has been living in Amsterdam since 2015, He has regularly performed on our stage, for example in the bands Ambergris, Jo Goes Hunting Orchestra and Sun-Mi Hong Quintet. He has previously collaborated with international luminaries such as Steve Swallow, Jesper Bodilsen en David Binney.

World premiere of supergroup with giants of international experimental music.

We are honored to be the first venue in the world to welcome the full seven-piece ensemble Chimaera, acclaimed for the eponymous album full of atmospheric, shape-shifting improvisations. Pianist/composer Sylvie Courvoisier leads the European-American formation. Remarkable contributors are Wadada Leo Smith, master trumpeter from the Chicago avant-garde, and Christian Fennesz, influential sound artist on guitar and electronics from Vienna.

With her compositions, Sylvie Courvoisier laid the foundations for the wondrously meditative and sonically and texturally varied album. An important source of inspiration was the art of Odilon Redon, whose Symbolist paintings imagine a colorful, hallucinatory dream world that expressed intangible and invisible phenomena.

For this international premiere, the ensemble is completed by Nate Wooley on trumpet, Drew Gress on double bass, Kenny Wollesen on vibes and percussion, and Nasheet Waits on drums. This concert is a collaboration with the North Sea Jazz Festival.

Internationally acclaimed Norwegian trumpeter takes you back to childhood with new album Lullaby. Pre-show by the Lyder Røed Quintet. Mathias Eick trumpet/keyboard/voice, Håkon Aase violin/percussion, Andreas Ulvo piano, Audun Erlien bass, Torstein Lofthus drums Mathias Eick, one of the most recognizable voices in Norwegian jazz, is known for his melodic compositions and distinctive, atmospheric trumpet sound. As both a soloist and bandleader, he continues to refine his approach. His latest album Lullaby (2024) explores universal memories of childhood through emotional and introspective music. The quintet performing this work features Håkon Aase (violin), Torstein Lofthus (drums), Andreas Ulvo (piano), and Audun Erlien (bass), each contributing their unique sound to Eick’s compositions. Eick’s ensemble brings together a blend of genres and influences, from folk traditions to classical and experimental jazz. Aase’s improvisations and Lofthus’ dynamic drumming add depth to Eick’s melodic storytelling, while Ulvo’s lyrical piano style and Erlien’s soul-infused grooves complete the rich, textured sound. Together, they create an intimate yet powerful experience, with Lullaby serving as a testament to Eick’s ongoing artistic evolution and his ability to connect deeply with listeners. Pianist from New York honors six women who have shaped her as a musician. Kris Davis piano, Robert Hurst bass, Johnathan Blake drums ‘For all its freshness and innovation, Davis’ music is precisely and unmistakably the sound of today’, says Downbeat Magazine about pianist Kris Davis. On her new album Run the Gauntlet she pays homage to six trailblazing women who have left an indelible mark on her journey as a pianist and composer: Geri Allen, Carla Bley, Renee Rosnes, Angelica Sanchez, Marilyn Crispell, and Sylvie Courvoisier. Like Davis, they are known for their groundbreaking improvisational playing. Davis will perform with the musicians who can be heard on the album, bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Johnathan Blake. Kris Davis recently made waves with her inventive album Diatom Ribbons (Live at the Village Vanguard) featuring DJ Val Jeanty on turntables, Julian Lage on guitar, Trevor Dunn on bass and Terri Lyne Carrington on drums. Saxophonist Lucas Santana wrote the music for the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, and his point of departure was the African diaspora in South America. Stories are conveyed through music on the basis of four pillars: Remember, Reflect, Acknowledge and Celebrate. In this way the performance creates room for conversations about culture, history and identity, themes that often remain undiscussed. Lucas Figueiredo Santana, a versatile Brazilian saxophone, clarinet and flute player, has been based in Amsterdam since 2015. His music combines influences of Brazilian styles such as samba and bossa nova with the expressive qualities of jazz. Lucas has previously won the Keep an Eye The Records Award.

Saxophone legend presents new quartet with top young musicians from New York. David Murray tenor saxophone/bass clarinet, Marta Sanchez piano, Luke Stewart double bass, Russell Carter drums With his new quartet, saxophone legend David Murray breathes new life into his music, reinforced by a group of leading musicians from the New York jazz scene. Pianist Marta Sanchez, bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Russell Carter form a dynamic ensemble that perfectly matches Murray’s playful ferocity and passion. Murray himself describes the quartet as a group of young, creative musicians looking to reach the top – an outstanding band that takes his adventurous sounds to new heights. Since his New York debut in 1975, Murray has been known for his powerful, quirky playing style and unique way of improvising. With deep roots in African-American music history – from swing and gospel to avant-garde jazz and rhythm ‘n’ blues – he has made his mark on the jazz world. He has collaborated with icons such as the World Saxophone Quartet, McCoy Tyner and Henry Threadgill.

The curator of this edition is alto saxophonist Mo van der Does. His vision will be shaped by his seven-piece Motet, through which he is displaying influences from the likes of Charles Mingus, Maurice Ravel en heroes of contemporary jazz. Motet is the seven-piece formation led by Mo van der Does, who has earned acclaim for his tone, his lyricism and his improvisational skills. His band features major talents from Dutch scene and beyond. The group can be as flexible as a small ensemble and as powerful as a big band, while exploring composition, orchestration and improvisation. Through long lasting friendships and musical connections these musicians have built up a mutual trust that allows them to go all the way on stage. Their sonic world is characterized by lyrical melodies and strong grooves, while interchanging intimate, melancholic parts with orchestral eruptions.

Acclaimed saxophone and clarinet player celebrates his birthday with a new, large and diverse ensemble. Sanem Kalfa voice/cello,George Dumitriu viola/guitar, Michael Moore clarinet/alto saxophone, Joost Buis trombone/lap steel guitar, Timothy Banchet piano, Bjørk Semey bass, João Guerra drums 45 years ago he already gave his first concert at the BIMHUIS, together with cellist Ernst Reijseger and drummer Michael Vatcher. Just a year before that, Michael Moore arrived in Amsterdam for the first time. Since then he has regularly performed on our stage every year, in all kinds of formations. Familiar names and new acquaintances from the Amsterdam scene return in his new seven-piece ensemble. What continues to drive him is his curiosity about music, especially music he does not yet comprehend, music with a lot of freedom and music in which players are aware that everything can change completely at the drop of a hat. Alto sax and clarinet player Michael Moore is renowned all over the world for his beautiful tone and his rich musical imagination. He grew up in Northern California, studied at the conservatory with Jaki Byard, George Russell, Joe Maneri, Ran Blake and Günther Schuller, and spent two years in New York before he made his move to Amsterdam. He is a fixture of the Amsterdam improv scene, as a writing member of ICP Orchestra and as the leader of his own bands. He has collaborated with many greats, including Lee Konitz, Dave Douglas and Fred Hersch.

Flamenco-jazzpianist is bringing together a sextet of top musicians with various musical backgrounds, from the Netherlands to Iran, Austria to Armenia. Daniel G. Diego compositions, piano, artistic direction, Ella Zirina guitar, Arin Keshishi bass guitar, Mario Rom trumpet, Shayan Fathi percussion, Delaram Kafashzadeh vocals Daniel García Diego is one of today’s most exciting Spanish jazz pianists. With his trio, he made his debut at the Flamenco Biennial Netherlands in 2021, the online and live edition of the festival. Since then he has been conquering jazz stages worldwide. ‘Jazz and flamenco are brothers’, he says. And he proves it on the acclaimed albums Travesuras and Vía de la Plata. In his expressive style, rhythmic intensity goes hand in hand with melodic richness and harmonic finesse. With the project ‘The Shape of Fire’ he pursues new musical paths. He is bringing together a sextet of top musicians with various musical backgrounds, from the Netherlands to Iran, Austria to Armenia – and Spain of course. “The Shape of Fire refers to the soul, the energy or fire that glows at the core of all music aiming to convey human emotions and life experiences,” says Daniel García Diego. “Music possesses the power to connect with the inner self and transform it into art. Whether it originates from flamenco, jazz, contemporary music, or Armenian folk songs, music arises from a necessity to express the unfathomable.”

Grammy-winning pianist celebrates his new album on GroundUp Music with an absolute star formation. Gretchen Parlato vocals, Casey Abrams vocals, Ben Wendel tenor sax, Taylor Eigsti piano/keys, Reggie McNeill keys Jonathan Maron bass, Zack Graybeal drums With his previous album Tree Falls, Taylor Eigsti won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. Earlier this year the American pianist released the follower Plot Armor, a diverse, richly orchestrated album full of stylistic twists and turns. Now he presents his compositions together with absolute star players of American jazz including singer Gretchen Parlato and saxophonist Ben Wendel, who can also be heard on the album. Taylor Eigsti released his first album at age fourteen. He has been celebrating success ever since as a solo artist, and accompanying major pop and jazz artists, from John Mayer and Sting to Dave Brubeck, Esperanza Spalding and Joshua Redman. He also became a member of Terence Blanchard’s E-Collective. Plot Armor was released on GroundUp Records, the label founded by Snarky Puppy band leader Michael League.

To celebrate fifty years of BIMHUIS he will present his renewed orchestra, plus special guests from the outer limits of music. Expect recycled samples, electronics, orchestral grooves, wild improv and spacey soundscapes. As our Nieuwe Maker, Tijn Wybenga took the opportunity to seize the essence of the current BIMHUIS community. The Brainteaser Orchestra (formerly AM.OK) reflects a new generation that defies categorization. The music has all been written with the Brainteaser method: recording live improvisations of band members and guest soloists, cutting and pasting hundreds of samples from those recordings and restructuring them in new ways, into new compositions. While Wybenga’s approach is unabashed and playful, the orchestra reveals a great promise for the future. ‘A compelling tapestry. Tijn Wybenga, an unapologetic bandleader, steers the ship with fervor through an odyssey that defies categorization. Rejecting the constraints of rigid genre descriptions, the ensemble explores heavy grooves, mesmerizing ballads, and ethereal soundscapes. Anything is conceivable as Wybenga propels his crew towards the next horizon, embracing the freedom to traverse diverse musical landscapes’ (Jazz in Europe).

Voorafgaand aan het concert vindt er een inleiding plaats met moderator Hasna El Maroudi en Tijn Wybenga, georganiseerd door Vrijdenkersfestival. Het gesprek zal gaan over innovatie in muziek. De inleiding start om 19:30 uur en is gratis toegankelijk. De voertaal is Nederlands. Ahead of the concert there will be an introductory talk with moderator Hasna El Maroudi and Tijn Wybenga about innovations in music, organised by Vrijdenkersfestival. The talk starts at 7:30 PM and will be in Dutch. Admission to this part of the program is free.
