DR. SALE MURTALA, BRILLIANT MEDICAL DOCTOR, SURVIVES BANDIT ATTACK IN KATSINA STATE

The medical community, Abusites Worldwide and Nigeria at large can breathe a sigh of relief as Dr. Sale Murtala, a talented and accomplished medical doctor, has miraculously survived a brutal attack by bandits at Kankara General Hospital in Katsina State.

Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria inducts 211 ABU graduands

A total of 211 graduands of the Department of Nursing Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria have been inducted into the nursing profession.

They were inducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) today (Wednesday, 8th January, 2025) at a ceremony held at Mamman Kontagora Square, Main Campus, ABU, Samaru, Zaria.

Speaking at the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, commended the Department of Nursing Sciences for going too far despite the enormous challenges faced in previous years.

Prof. Bala appealed to the Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, (NMCN), to increase the number of indexed students annually for the University, being the highest producer of Nurses in the country.

The Vice-Chancellor reiterated the continuous support of the University Management to the Department in order to make the programme more recognised globally.

He congratulated the lecturers, parents and the graduands for attaining a high academic excellence, and urged them to be good ambassadors of the University.

In his remarks, the Dean, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Dr. D.K Sani, said the induction ceremony is a tradition of the Department to introduce graduands into the nursing profession.

Dr. Sani, who is also the Head, Department of Nursing Sciences, disclosed that the Department has over ten PhD holders, saying with the support of the University Management, some are on training and others who were back have since proceeded to overseas for post-doctoral programmes.

The Dean said in terms of infrastructural development, the new building of the Department had been completed, waiting for clearance from the University Management to move in.

According to him, ABU is producing the largest number of nurses in the global community and the graduates of the Department are competent and are being sought globally.

The Dean appreciated the tremendous contributions of Prof. Hayat Gomma to the development of the Postgraduate programmes of the Department, adding that, so far, it has graduated 38 PhD and 79 MSc students.

This year, according to him, the Department successfully graduated 211 students, out of which 10 made First Class, 128 Upper Second Class, and 73 Lower Second Class.

Administering the professional oath to the graduands, the Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Malam Allhassan Ndagi, emphasized that the success of the graduands at the Council's exams qualified them for registration into the profession.

Represented by Mrs. Dota Sampu, the Registrar explained that nursing is a professional and academic programme aimed at promoting nursing sciences and holistically developing the healthcare sector in the country.

The Registrar enjoined the graduands to be willing to accept corrections where necessary and that they have the duty to contribute to the quality assurance of the profession globally.

Speaking on behalf of parents, Hajiya Lami Yakawu, thanked the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management for supporting their children.

Hajiya Yakawu enjoined the graduands to make their parents and the University proud wherever they find themselves..

In a goodwill message, the Class Representative of the graduating class, Mikail Muhammad Mikail, said the University shaped them into better individuals morally and academically.

Certificates and awards were presented to the First Class graduates and other distinguished individuals at the occasion.

ABU participates in Wuhan conference on traditional medicine

Ahmadu Bello University was one of the participants of the ‘7th Belt and Road’ International Conference on Traditional Medicine held in Wuhan, China from 19th – 20th December, 2024.

The University gave a keynote lecture at the conference. The lecture, entitled ‘Unlocking the Power of Nigerian Herbal Medicine: A Key to Global Health Transformation’, was delivered by the Ag. Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Prof. Mohammed Garba Magaji.

Delivering the lecture, Prof. Magaji sought for global collaboration in harnessing the potential for Nigerian herbal medicine for the benefit of all.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, who led the University delegation to the two-day international gathering, spoke at the conference and highlighted the importance of the global meeting.

Many papers, particularly on the history, utilisation and efficacy of herbal medicines in various cultures and traditions across the globe were presented at the conference.

In his presentation, the Director, Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Prof. Ado Yusuf, stressed the importance of integrating medicinal plants in Nigerian farming systems.

Prof. Yusuf spoke on ‘Breeding for Nutrition and Health: The Institute for Agricultural Research’s Mandate and Achievements in Crop and Artemisia Research in Nigeria’.

Equally, the Head of Department of Pharmacognosy and Drug Development, Dr. Zayd Abubakar, talked at the conference when he presented a paper, entitled ‘Prospects of African Traditional Medicine in Health Care and Commerce’.

The international gathering, which was attended by participants from Asia, Africa, and Europe, stressed the need for the formation of a global association of researchers on traditional medicines.

CPN, NCS honour ABU’s ex-VC, Prof. Iya Abubakar, as he turns 90

Computer Professionals (Registration Council) of Nigeria (CPN) and Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) are set to rejoice with the former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Iya Abubakar, on the occasion of his 90th birthday celebration.

Prof. Abubakar, who was the second indigenous Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University from 1975 to 1978, will turn 90 on Saturday, 14th December, 2024.

The 90th birthday celebration is being organised by the two professional computer regulatory bodies in honour of the renowned mathematics professor, who became the Vice-Chancellor of the first University of Northern Nigeria at the age of 41.

The event, which will take place at NICON Luxury, Abuja, will feature exhibition, goodwill messages and cutting of birthday cake by the celebrant along with some members of his family and other well-wishers.

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Kabiru Bala, is thrilled to join Nigerians and other well-wishers in felicitating with the distinguished academic whose tenure as ABU Vice-Chancellor witnessed tremendous success in teaching, research and community service.

Prof. Bala, on behalf of Management, Staff and Students of Ahmadu Bello University, congratulated the great mathematics teacher on attaining 90 years of age and wished him many returns of this special day.

ABU EMERGE VICTORIOUS IN THE NORTHWEST NATIONAL ORIENTATIONS' AGENCY NATIONAL VALUES CHARTER CAMPUS DEBATE

The Ahmadu Bello University Students' Representatives Council under the leader of Comrade Nazeer Ibrahim Kallah congratulates Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, on its victory in the Northwest National Orientation Agency (NOA) 7 for 7 National Values Charter Campus Debate.

The debate which was held at the Kano State College of Education, and Preliminary Studies, centered on the topic "7 for 7 National Values Charter: Striking the Balance between Government Promises and Citizen's Responsibilities in Nation-Building."

Team ABU comprised of Sadiq Sani and Usman Abubakar, both medical students, secured 444 points to defeat their opponents from the Nigeria Police Academy (P***C), Wudil, who fell short by 12 points and had a total of 432 points.

Team ABU earned a cash prize of N5 million, a trophy, and a ticket to participate in the national grand finale in Abuja for a N20 million cash prize.

President Kallah reaffirmed his commitment to supporting and celebrating students who represent ABU at various competitions. He announced plans to launch an Oratory team to boost the morale of ABU's orators and debaters.

FG selects ABU among few institutions to pilot TTTP

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has been selected as one of the few institutions to pilot the implementation of the Technical Teacher Training Programme (TTTP) in order to engage the Nigerian youth in vocational training.

This was disclosed by a team of officials from the Federal Ministry of Education team, when they called on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Kabiru Bala.

The officials came to the university for a facility tour and validation exercise in preparation for the programme.

The team leader, Mrs. Olaniyan Gbemisola, expressed appreciation to Vice-Chancellor for sharing his experiences that will make the programme a sustainable and successful one.

She explained that the federal government is looking at the possibility of starting the TTTP in full scale “with the availability of teaching staff, equipment and curriculum witnessed in the University".

"I have no doubt ABU is more than capable”, she stressed.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, thanked the delegation for finding ABU worthy for the programme.

The Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Provost, College of Medical Sciences, Prof. M.S Shehu, assured the team of the University’s commitment towards the actualisation of the programme.
