Segun Bucknor (born March 29, 1946, in Lagos, Nigeria) was a renowned Nigerian musician, journalist, and political activist who played a pivotal role in popularizing the soul and afro-soul music genres in Nigeria during the 1960s and 1970s. He was educated at King's College in Lagos and later attended Columbia University in New York, where he was exposed to American soul music, which greatly influenced his musical style.

Upon returning to Nigeria, Bucknor formed the band Segun Bucknor and the Assembly, which later evolved into Segun Bucknor and the Revolution. His music was characterized by politically charged lyrics that addressed social issues in Nigeria, resonating with the country's evolving political landscape. However, despite his innovative contributions to the Nigerian music scene, Bucknor's career was often overshadowed by comparisons to his contemporary, Fela Kuti, who was considered the king of afrobeat.

In addition to his musical career, Bucknor was also a journalist and a family man. He was married to Sola Bucknor, and they had two daughters: Funke Bucknor-Obruthe, a businesswoman, and Tosyn Bucknor, a media personality.

Bucknor's health began to decline in his later years, and he passed away on August 11, 2017, in Lagos, Nigeria. Despite the challenges he faced, his legacy continues to influence Nigerian music, and his works remain a testament to his talent and commitment to addressing societal issues through art.

"I SHOULD HAVE GIVEN WIZKID A LISTENING EAR"

-Banky W finally drops an apology to Wizkid

"It's been years past now, E.M.E has been inactive. I missed those days of the baddest boy, with Wizkid and Skales by my side.

I remember Late OJB Jezreel telling me to bank on Wizkid because his future is very bright considering how he finished work with M.I on Fast money fast cars.

I took him in, gave him a home in EME because EME originated from Albany, and our mission was to take off talents from the projects and brand them into the American class.

Wizkid wanted to be an Afro version of Sean Kingston and a blend of Fela Kuti.

It wasn't an easy task on EME considering that we had a fight to first beat Kennis, Mo'Hits and Chocolate City who had the Industry Kings and other independent artists putting the work to have a space in the table.

Just imagine trying to bring a western concept into an Industry with Kings like; Terry G, Timaya, D'Banj, 2Baba, Wande Coal, Ice-Prince and M.I... A market where you just have to make what I call a "Melodious Noise" to be heard.

Strategically, I made my way through with Mo'Hits records who happened to be the Topdog of that era and I secured a collaboration with D'Prince and Wande Coal on Wizkid.

You see up till this day many people do not know, we (Don Jazzy) strategically had Wande Coal on hold for Wizkid to drop the Star Boy album as Wande Coal was just about to drop an album after Mushin to Mohitz. We did that because; at that point in time a Wizkid album cannot stand rivalry with a Wande album together in the market.

I made sure the three best producers the Industry had that time are included in the Wizkid's project.

I pushed the Wizkid first single in the 3 Major cities of Nigeria; Lagos, Port-Harcourt and Abuja. Paying almost all OAP's, DJ's and Radio Personalities in those cities to push the new sound into the ears of people who were used to sounds from Terry G and Timaya.

It wasn't an easy task as I almost went bankrupt.

Buju Banton was right! Afrobeats isn't speaking for Nigerians at all. No artiste is talking about the plights of Nigerians currently. They're just singing about women & parties in a country where over 100M people are in poverty.

When Buju spoke about Afrobeats, they came for his head. But man was absolutely right. There's nothing to learn from Afrobeats. It's making zero contribution to our national life. Sad.

For those who missed Buju Banton's comments on Afrobeats, see it below:

"Afrobeats is not uplifting Africa. It's not freeing the minds of the people. Yes, the artistes are making money, but what would be said of them when they're gone? When they couldn't use their music to uplift their people."

🇳🇬🗣️ John Obi Mikel: "My dad got kidnapped while I was playing for Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia."

"We were about to play against Argentina. Two hours before the game I got a phone call from my brother saying my dad got kidnapped."

"The first time he was kidnapped was shocking, but the second time was even more shocking because I was about to go into one of the biggest games of my life."

“I couldn't leave the room. I couldn't tell anybody. I was alone in the room for about 30 minutes, thinking what am I going to do?"

"But we're about to go into the biggest game of our lives. We're about to play against Lionel Messi and Argentina."

"Chelsea were very supportive. I remember Roman Abramovich saying 'do you want me to send people over? Because I know if I send people over, I can get your dad out' — I was like, how are you going to do this?"

"He said don't worry about that. Just let me know if you want that option, I can do it."

()

4/5 days after the game, John's father was released and rescued by police.

Chelsea will forever miss Abramovich. The man was different 😢

Throwback ⏳

20 years ago today on May 15th 2004, Innocent Idibia (2BABA) fka 2 Face released his first solo album 'Face to Face' under Kennis Music Records.

The album which had hits like African Queen, Nfana Ibaga, Right Here, Ole, etc was largely produced by the late OJB Jezreel and is rightly considered by many to be the album that paved way for the present day success of Afrobeat as a genre.

Said to have sold over 2 million units, the album gained commercial success across Africa and later crossed into Europe with the hit song African Queen used as a sound track for the American movie Phat Girls while the legendary Bennie man featured on the remix of Nfana Ibaga, one of the first international collaborations of that generation.

In 2005, the album made 2 Face to be the first African to win the MTV Europe Music Awards. He would also win the World Music Awards, BET, and MOBO Awards as the best African Act.

"I spoke with some of the players I have been with in the national team for a long time, such as Alex Iwobi and Leon Balogun.

They all expressed that they believed it would be a loss if I left and that they thought I still had much to offer."

10/02/2024

AS WE APPROACH THE FINALS OF THE AFCON;
It is a National pride when your country or club sides wins a tournament for lovers of football. It is a thing to brag about making it a point of discussion among your counterparts that the team you are supporting wins, but do not put your heart to it. In the recent times we have had series of death cases, families and folks loosing their loved ones in the event of a game which has put so many into mourning.
HOW DO I WATCH THE FINAL?
1. If you are emotional do not watch the final. Do not go to a viewing centre. Find something else, another activity to distract you.

2. Check your blood pressure; Do you have hypertension or hypotension? Check it to ascertain your blood pressure level. If it requires you to go home and sleep at home and rest, please do that.

3. Do not put your heart in it. Prepare your heart and your mind to know that there will always be a looser and there will always be a winner. Whatever result that comes, take it in good faith.

4. Know that the people playing the football are doing their work, their occupation and their means of livelihood. Whether they win or loose their occupation continues. They will always have other opportunities and other tournament to play. You have a job and a family who look up to you. Do not put your heart in it.

5. Talk to yourself, speak to your mind and heart and say there is always a winner and there is always a looser. If your country wins fine, if they loose fine. Life continues.

6. Do not gamble with your house, properties, children, because you want to watch football. Your sure odds may fail you, but let your life and destiny be preserved.
May God comfort every family that is bereaved. Our deepest heartfelt condolences to them. May their souls rest in peace. Amen.
