10TH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY: HOW GOD GAVE ME VICTORY OVER TYRANNY

From a background of over 25 years of a very rewarding career as a globally-ranking QHSE Consultant, venturing into politics was borne of my desire to touch the lives of a wider cross-section of people than I was able to do within the ambit of my professional career. The Favour of God found me in massive support from my people and I was duly elected to serve as the representative of the good people of Ikono-Ini Federal Constituency at the National Assembly 2019 - 2023. I wish to first express my sincere gratitude to God and my people for the rare privilege of serving as a member of the 9th National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

This desire for service kept burning and propelled the noble efforts I was able to make in the interest of the people during my first four years as their representative. However, the belief that there is so much more to offer spurred my aspiration for another term. From the corridors of power to the trenches of grassroots politics, God’s favour again saw me through storms of betrayal, political conspiracy, and indeed, outright tyranny, on my journey to securing a second term in office. Today, as I stand re-elected to serve, I recount the twists and turns that marked my relentless pursuit of service to my constituents, whose collective will should not be suppressed.

My quest for a second term in the House of Representatives was a tussle between a powerful cabal and the resilience of an electorate determined that l should represent them once again. My interest instigated a dreadful conspiracy and, between 2019 and 2022, it was a battle for true democracy, in the face of relentless opposition. It began with a sinister orchestration by the leadership of the ruling party in Akwa Ibom State - Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) - at the prompting of the state's immediate past administration, to dictate the political future of my constituency. On the grounds of arbitrary zoning of political offices, the party's structures were systematically and unjustly withdrawn from me - and even turned against me - despite my dedication and service to the people and despite being the highest political office holder.

In July 2021, the political posts were further shifted against me as the leadership of Ikono Local Government Area, decided to zone the House of Representatives seat to Ini Local Government Area, to thwart my ambition. This blow was followed by another in September 2021 when the political stakeholders of my Federal Constituency - who had earlier supported me - suddenly conspired to label me unfit for re-election, and went ahead to propose a zoning arrangement in favour of Ini Local Government Area.
By April 2022, the state leadership of the PDP, endorsed this zoning directive for the House of Representatives seat. I was summoned to the Akwa Ibom State Government House and requested to withdraw my candidacy. Thereafter, by manipulating the democratic process to suit the personal desire of a few who sought to maintain their political stranglehold, I was formally disqualified by the national and state PDP screening committee, a move that effectively sidelined my candidacy.

From these ashes of despair, however, a flicker of hope emerged. A successful appeal to the National Working Committee of the PDP in Abuja saw me reinstated as a legitimate aspirant for the party's primary elections in May 2022. Yet, the party structure within the state remained treacherous and, in a controversial move, defied the will of the people by awarding the party ticket to an unpopular aspirant in whom there was a vested personal interest by the power centre in the state.
In the face of this gross injustice, I made the difficult but bold decision to chart a new course. In June 2022, I defected to the Young Progressives Party (YPP), rallying my supporters behind me as we embarked on a path less travelled. The journey ahead was fraught with peril as the months that followed saw repeated arrest and detention of hundreds of my loyal supporters.

This set the tone for the eagerly anticipated general elections on February 25th 2023. Despite emerging victorious by a margin of 4,161 votes, the joy of triumph was short-lived as the results were deemed inconclusive. Subsequent attempts at conducting supplementary elections on April 15th 2023 were marred by violence. In May 2023, INEC's review of existing results heralded a moment of vindication as I was declared the rightful winner of the 2023 elections. I took the oath of office at the National Assembly in June 2023. But, the journey was far from over.
Fierce legal challenges led to the election petition tribunal through a perverse judgement nullified my victory in November 2023 and ordered a rerun in 33 of the 281 polling units. In January 2024 the Appeal Court in Abuja upheld the tribunal's decision, paving the way for a decisive rerun.

In February 2024, the moment of redemption finally came. The people of Ikono-Ini refused to be pawns, rejecting imposition with disdain for their right to choose their representative. The people spoke with a resounding voice, casting their votes in defiance of oppression and tyranny. Today, their voices have been heard through the February 3rd rerun elections which culminated in my successful re-election.

I took a second oath of office, reaffirming my pledge to uphold the values of democracy and represent the aspirations of my constituents. With this certificate of return in hand, I stand once more on the threshold of leadership to embark on a new chapter of service.
My journey to re-election was not merely a quest for power, but an enduring quest to satisfy the yearnings of an overwhelming majority of people who, by their resilience in the face of intimidation and oppression, wholeheartedly placed their trust and belief in me.

I wish to remind everyone about the transient nature of power. Let us remember the significance of humility and deference to the higher authority of The Almighty, from whom all power emanates. We must acknowledge that our purpose in positions of authority is to serve, and thus, we must not allow the allure of power to delude us into a misguided belief of omnipotence. And to those who - through malice or ignorance, dead or living - opposed or suppressed my ambition, I extend the hand of forgiveness. For it is through forgiveness that we find the strength to heal and move forward, united in our shared humanity.

To God alone be the Glory, Amen!

Ibiono Ibom: More Groups Condemn Illegal Impeachment Attempt on Council Chairman, Ekopimo Polycarp

-As Leader of Legislative House boycotts Peace-deal Meeting

Condemnations have continued to trail the illegal attempt by some Councillors of Ibiono Ibom Local Government Council against the Council Chairman, Rt. Hon. Ekopimo Polycarp Edet.

Some Councillors of the Ibiono Ibom Legislative House had on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, after breaking into the Council Secretariat, held an illegal plenary where the said impeachment was concocted without the Clerk or Sergeant at Arms.

After learning that the October 18, 2023 sitting was null and void, the Councillors again gathered on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, to stage another illegal impeachment attempt.

The Councillors are asking the local government chairman to suspend ongoing projects in the Council and pay them different allowances, as their tenure would elapse by December, 2023.

Despite receiving their salaries, Furniture Allowances, Security Votes and Running, up untill September 2023, the Councillors are asking the Council Chairman to paythem the sum of N3,500, 000 (Three Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira) each, as they were vacating office soon.

However, the Council Chairman, Hon. Ekopimo Polycarp, in a closed door meeting with the Councillors, informed them of his intention to complete all ongoing projects in the area before the expiration of his tenure, a decision that has not gone down well with the self-seeking Councillors.

But in a swift reaction, some groups in the state, including the Akwa Ibom Youth Leaders Forum, Ibiono Ibom Chapter and the Ibiono Ibom Southern Youths Stakeholders have said that the impeachment plot was politically motivated, unnecessary and absolutely illegal.

According to the Akwa Ibom Youth Leaders Forum, Ibiono Ibom Chapter, "these Councillors have not been robust in their legislative affairs which is expressly their primary assignment. We also gathered that for almost three years now, most of the Councillors have not called for their ward's briefing."

"The Executive Chairman of Ibiono Ibom has performed excellently well and should not be distracted by either the legislators, whosoever."

"Satisfactorily, we are also of the know that the same Councillors so far have received all their entitlements, being Salaries, Furniture allowance, Running cost and Security votes, except the month of October, 2023 to the tune of N95,543,040", the group noted in their Press Statement.

On their part, the Ibiono Ibom Southern Youths Stakeholders revealed that Chairman has paid Furniture/Welfare Allowances of N2,000,000 (N2m) each, to the 13 Councillors and Supervisors to the tune of N26,000,000 (N26m)."

"Each of the serving Councillor has received N233,000 monthly as salary for 34 months amounting to N7,932,000 (N7.9m)."

The group said the Council Chairman has done well and urged the Councillors not to truncate the peace in Ibiono Ibom.

Meanwhile, the Leader of Ibiono Ibom Legislative House, Hon. Udeme Sunday, boycotted the Peace-deal meeting convened by elders of Ibiono Ibom LGA.

The meeting was attended by the Abai of Ibiono Ibom, Obong Nsima Umoh, Hon. Etop Idung,
Political Adviser to the Governor, Dr. Godwin Ntukudeh, Rt. Hon. Ekopimo Polycarp and other Illustrious sons and daughters of Ibiono Ibom who gathered to look into the concerns raised by the Councillors.

It was however gathered that the Legislative House Leader was at the Council Secretariat when he and some other Councilors went to illegally impeach the Chairman.

Oku Ibom’ll unite, attract dividends to A’Ibom -Dr Essien-Ibok

The Oku Ibom Ibibio’s permanent headship of the Supreme Council of Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers has received the nod of elderstatesman and foremost business tycoon, Obong Dr Asikpo Essien-Ibok, who holds that for the sake of Akwa Ibom’s unity and national integration, the state had to settle for a permanent representative in the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria.

Speaking with newsmen over the weekend in Uyo, Essien-Ibok averred that the development is in sync with the setup of traditional institutions in other climes.

According to him, Akwa Ibom State having a supreme traditional ruler has revived the consciousness that the present occupants of Akwa Ibom land mostly originated from the same stock as evidenced in the dominant Ibibio language, culture and tradition.

Drawing inferences from other parts of the country, he said the North, South West and South East, often referred to as Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo, respectively, doesn’t imply suppression of the various subsets embedded in those tribes.

Going down memory lane, Dr Essien-Ibok recalled that the founding fathers of the state were wise in using the all-encompassing Ibibio umbrella in pursuit of statehood.

Listing other merits of the development, he highlighted that Akwa Ibom State through the Oku Ibom Ibibio will be able to establish longterm and productive camaraderie with majority of members of the national TRC who are permanent members, and be properly carried along in the formulation and implementation of long term policies and programmes that are of great importance to the citizenry.

He cautioned politicians to desist from stoking disharmony and unrest in the state by spewing baseless allegations of tribal suppression and hatred.
“The political interpretation of the amendment is different from the content – there is nowhere in the content qof the law that mentions anything about superiority and inferiority, there is nowhere that mentions oppression and submission. Politicians seeking to make political gains have minscontrued the law. Their interpretation is not what the law represents. Let’s not create unnecessary problems because of this well-intentioned law,” he advised.

About a fortnight ago, the Akwa Ibom State Government via Governor Umo Eno sent an Executive Bill to the House of Assembly for a Law to amend the Traditional Rulers Law, Cap. 155, Laws Of Akwa Ibom State.

The bill, passed by the House of Assembly, has since been assented to by the governor.
The amendment among other provisions prescribes that the Oku Ibom Ibibio (the king of the majority tribe) assumes permanent headship of the newly created Supreme Council of Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers.

President Tinubu welcomes tribunal verdict, calls for collective effort to build the nation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has welcomed the judgment of the Presidential Election Petitions Court dismissing the petitions filed against him by the Presidential candidates of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and his PDP counterpart, Atiku Abubakar.

In a statement released by his media aide, Ajuri Ngelale, the President said he welcomes the judgment with an intense sense of solemn responsibility and preparedness to serve all Nigerians, irrespective of all diverse political persuasions, faiths, and tribal identities.

‘’The President recognizes the diligence, undaunted thoroughness, and professionalism of the five-member bench, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani in interpreting the law.

The President affirms that his commitment to the rule of law, and the unhindered discharge of duties by the Tribunal, as witnessed in the panel's exclusive respect for the merits of the petitions brought forward, further reflects the continuing maturation of Nigeria’s legal system, and the advancement of Africa's largest democracy at a time when our democratic system of government is under test in other parts of the continent.''the statement read

Ajuri added that by virture of the judgement delivered today, the President believes the Presidential Candidates and Political Parties that have lawfully exercised their rights by participating in the 2023 general elections and the judicial process, which followed, have affirmed Nigeria’s democratic credentials.

He added that the President urges his valiant challengers to inspire their supporters in the trust that the spirit of patriotism will now and forever be elevated above partisan considerations, manifesting into support for our Government to improve the livelihood of all Nigerians.

‘’Once more, President Tinubu thanks Nigerians for the mandate given to him to serve our country while promising to meet and exceed their expectations, by the grace of God Almighty, and through very diligent hard work with the team that has been put in place for that sole purpose.''the statement read

PRESS RELEASE

VKS GROUP: OUR VISION IN NIGERIA IS ON COURSE

Following series of rumour making the rounds in several quarters including the media, the Management of VKS Group wish to state categorically that, VKS Group of companies is strictly in the business of delivering general goods and services, including building, construction and investments. We are not in any way a political party or political group or have any interest in politics.

This release is necessary following attempts by some individuals who perhaps may be seeking political offices, thus attempt to drag us into their argument and discussion. We completely distance ourselves from such group of persons, and advise that these few individuals should focus on their political endeavours and allow VKS to carry out their legitimate responsibility effectively which will be to the overall interest of the general public and particularly our esteemed host, Akwa Ibom State.

Since we berthed Akwa Ibom State some six years ago, there is no gain saying that we have delivered world class projects in the state within record time. Our firm, VKS Nigeria Construction Limited, delivered the 21 Smart Storey building to the state government weeks before the actual contractual time of delivery. It is public knowledge that our company has also constructed and delivered to the state a 12,742km Awa Iman-Asong Road with two bridges in Onna and Mkpat Enin local government areas, coupled with dualization of 1km Awa- Nkan Road, with outfalls drains in Onna, as well as the St. Gabriel Coconut Refinery in Mkpat Enin LGA.

Satisfied with the quality of our projects and our culture of timely delivery, the state government awarded the Victor Attah International Terminal to our construction firm, VKS. The work at present is near completion and will be delivered again, on record time, by December 2022.

May we reiterate that some of the projects we have been entrusted to deliver to the state government in the last five years are: The 21 Smart Storey building, St. Gabriel Coconut Refinery, construction of Victor Attah International Airport Terminal building, construction of 12,742km Awa Iman-Asong Road with two bridges in Onna and Mkpat Enin local government areas, dualization of 1km Awa- Nkan Road, with outfalls drains in Onna, and Odio, Ndon-Eyo, Ikwe - Ikot Akpatek road project. In all these, we have completed and handed over to the state government all, except the later, coupled with the airport project. May we state that these two projects are already in various advanced stages of completion and they could easily be accessed and appraised by the public.

We have a track record of project delivery in some states of Nigeria. We have a name to protect, hence we assure Akwa Ibom State government and the good people of the state that these two ongoing projects, mentioned above, would be completed soon. There is certainly no cause for alarm.

We are focused on contributing our quota to the industrialization dreams of the state through our companies. Needless to mention that our Jubilee Syringe manufacturing company operating in Akwa Ibom State, which we built from scratch, continues to maintain its position as the largest syringe manufacturing company in Africa, even as our Kings Flour Mill, again, which we conceived and built, has kept Akwa Ibom State on the map as the state hosting the fourth largest flour producing company in Nigeria. The gains of our investment in Akwa Ibom State will continue to resonate in the state for years to come.

To this end, we wish to emphasize that we are committed to the growth and development of Akwa Ibom State in particular and Nigeria in general through our deliveries and investments. However, we appeal to all in the state and country at large, to continue to support us to meet these targets and goals.

We are not given to distractions. We will not be distracted. We are on a mission to create lasting legacy in Nigeria, and we are poised on remaining apolitical in all our operations across Nigeria.
