Nigeria’s Senate passed a bill on Wednesday granting a 300% pay rise for the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and all other judicial officers in the country. The Red Chamber approved the report presented by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (APC- Borno North), to the lawmakers.

This followed the consideration and adoption of an executive bill transmitted by President Bola Tinubu, which sought to prescribe improved salaries and allowances as well as other fringe benefits for judicial officers and workers. The Executive bill forwarded by the President is titled “A Bill for an Act to Prescribe...

Oliver Glasner helped to transform Crystal Palace into one of the most exciting teams to watch in England towards the end of the season this year. The Austrians’ side became one of the most dangerous teams in the Premier League. They beat Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Aston Villa in their final five fixtures and looked ready to take on anyone in the country.

However, the only downside to performing so well is that the other sides start to look at your best players, and Palace is no different. Michael Olise, who was already touted for a move away last summer, has seen his name connected with several clubs over the last few months, from Arsenal to Manchester United.

Russia could arm countries with long-range weapons to strike Western targets in response to NATO allies allowing Ukraine to use their arms to attack Russian territory, President Vladimir Putin warns.

Several countries including the United States and Germany recently authorized Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia with the long-range weapons they are supplying to Kyiv.

In a rare face-to-face meeting with international journalists on Wednesday, President Putin critiqued the decision, stating that the use of the weapons could lead to “very serious problems”.

Despite petrol subsidy removal, the Nigerian government said fuel subsidy is projected to reach N5.4 trillion by the end of 2024. This, it said, compares unfavorably with N3.6 trillion in 2023.

This is contained in a draft copy report of the Accelerated Stabilization and Advancement Plan (ASAP) presented to President Bola Tinubu by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, on Wednesday. “At current rates, expenditure on fuel subsidy is projected to reach N5.4 trillion by the end of 2024. This compares unfavorably with N3.6 trillion in 2023 and N2.0 trillion in 2022,” the report said.

President Tinubu had, in his inaugural address on 29 May 2023, announced the removal of the subsidy to lift a major financial burden off the back of the government.

The Organised Labour has suspended the nationwide strike for five days to give room for uninterrupted meetings with the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) president Festus Osifo said this on Tuesday in Abuja.

With this development, every government and private office is expected to reopen and function as usual.

Recall that the labour leaders had a successful meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume, and other government officials on Monday and reached a resolution that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was committed to a new minimum wage higher than N60,000.

They equally resolved that the Tripartite Committee would meet every day for the next one week to arrive at an agreeable National Minimum Wage.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appealed to organised labour to consider students sitting for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination as it plans an indefinite strike. The Head of the National Office of WAEC, Dr Amos Dangut, appealed in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

He said that the council shared the concerns of organised labour and those of all Nigerian workers. According to him, most of WAEC’s employees in Nigeria are members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) or Trade Union Congress (TUC), both of which called for the strike scheduled to start on Monday.
