Lagos center stops hijab-wearing students as UTME commences

A female Muslim student has narrated how she was allegedly asked to remove her hijab at a center in Lagos where she had gone to write Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The examination administered by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for students seeking admission into any tertiary institution in Nigeria commenced on Friday, April 19.

Muslim News Nigeria gathered that it will run through April 29, 2024.

The victim, Aisha Tiamiyu told our correspondent on Friday that the official of Bafuto Institute, Ile-Iwe Bus-Stop, Ejigbo, Lagos denied her entry, insisting that use of hijab wasn't allowed on the promises.

The hijab-wearing student reportedly removed her hijab before she was permitted to write the examination.

According to her, "On getting to the centre, the man at the gate asked me to remove my hijab and because I insisted I wasn't going to do that, I was delayed outside. A woman yelled at me from one of the offices, saying that hijab was not allowed.

"When I couldn't bear it any longer, I was helpless because time was running very fast. I removed my hijab, so I was allowed to go into the exam hall. However, a man told me to use my hijab thirty minutes into the exam."

Muslim News findings also revealed that two other female students were stopped and delayed at the gate for their refusal to remove their Hijabs before they were eventually allowed in.

Recalled that the UTME has always been marred by harassment and violation of Muslim students rights to use the hijab. But the examination body - JAMB, has affirmed that its rule does not prevent female candidates from wearing hijab or other dresses that are in line with their religious beliefs.

Members of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, MSSN, Lagos State Area Unit, are converged at Alausa Secretariat Mosque, Ikeja, for a special Usrah to commemorate the society's 70th anniversary.

The Usrah, also known as family gathering, is one of the series of activities marking the platinum jubilee of the Muslim students' body founded on May 30, 1954, at Ansar-Ud-Deen Alakoro Mosque School Hall, Lagos.

While admonishing the students from all the active 47 area councils in the State, the guest speaker, Dr. Abdul Hakeem Abdul Lateef, the immediate past chairman of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), said all various professions are necessities, saying there is one that is compulsory for everyone, which is the knowledge of the Quran and Hadith.

16th April, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

*2027: LAGOS MUSLIMS YEARN FOR THEIR OWN - MURIC*

Muslims in Lagos State are yearning for one of their own as governor come 2027. This was disclosed by an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).

In a statement circulated to pressmen on Tuesday, 16th April, 2024, the group's Executive Director and Founder, Professor Ishaq Akintola, said any attempt to impose a Christian governor on Lagos for a third time will be a violation of the rules of fairness, equity, inclusivity and participatory democracy.

The full statement reads:

"As Nigerian politicians settle down for governance around the country, plans are also being made for 2027. Already, new alliances are taking shape while profound pronouncements that serve the interest of different groups are being made.

"In order not to be caught unawares, Muslims of Lagos State are setting the machinery in motion to ensure that one of them, a fellow Muslim, emerges as governor in 2027.

"It is the only path to sanity in the Lagos political architecture. The incumbent, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is a Christian. He took over from Akinwunmi Ambode, a Christian, after the latter's second term ambition was truncated.

“In a metropolitan and multi-religious state, it is only natural that Muslims will make this demand at this point in time. It should be noted that the Christians of Lagos made a similar demand in 2013 for a Christian to be governor. That was how Ambode became governor in 2015.

"Instead of spending only one term to complete the Christian occupation of Lagos government house, Sanwo-Olu went ahead for a second term thereby shortchanging the Muslims. The Christians would have spent a whole twelve years in government by 2027.

"Nobody should come around this time ventilating the gospel of competence, the pre-eminence of skill or the priority of talent. They are mere smokescreens designed to hoodwink the public. Competence abounds everywhere. Nigerians, and indeed Muslims, are highly skilled.

"No section of Nigeria suffers from any desertification of competence. Muslims are talented just as Christians are skilled. Competent people can be found in the North, West and East. It is those in power who should sniff around well enough to locate competent Nigerians. They should not concentrate on one religious group or sector.

*"It is an insult to the collective intelligence of Nigerian Muslims to give appointments to Christians only with the excuse that you have given those appointments to competent people. Let's not repeat that again please. It is nauseating.*

"It depends on where you looked. It reflects the direction where you spread your tentacles. To conduct a fair, objective and balanced search, leaders must extend their dragnets to both Muslim and Christian individuals, professionals and communities. That is fairness. Searches must be conscious of the need for inclusiveness. So must the position of state governors.

"No group must be seen to be enjoying the monopoly of power. Christians have been governors for three solid terms (Ambode: 2015-2019; Sanwo-Olu: 2019-2027). It should therefore be the turn of the Muslims in 2027.

"Any attempt to impose a Christian governor on Lagos for a third time will break the rules of fairness, equity, inclusivity and participatory democracy. It will also be an encroachment on Allah-given fundamental rights of Lagos Muslims to participate in all aspects of governance and to exercise their civils rights to vote and be voted for.

"We have not said Ambode under-performed. No, he took Lagos to the next level in his own time. Sanwo-Olu has also been doing wonders since 2019. But that is not the point. True democracy does not hero-worship. Neither does it perpetuate or concentrate power in one hand.

"That is why elections are held every four years no matter how well the incumbent has performed and his or her second mandate must end after the second term even if he has performed magic.

"The Christians must therefore step aside for their Muslim counterparts in Lagos by 2027 even if Ambode and Sanwo-Olu have given helicopters to every single Lagosian, daily lunch tickets at Sheraton to every civil servant and free train and bus rides at all times on both the red and blue lines in the state of aquatic squalor.

*"Let's stop underrating and in the process marginalising Muslims in the political arena. We can beat our chests that Professor Ishaq Oloyede is the best performing public officer in Nigeria today. Somebody found him and it would not have happened if he had not looked in the direction of the Muslims.*

"Professor Ibrahim Ali Isa Pantami would not have surfaced in the public sphere as a cyber security genius if we had held tightly to the dogma of 'no talent among Muslims'. Professor Babagana Zulum is generally accepted as the best performing governor in Nigeria. He is a Muslim. There are many more hidden talents in the Muslim camp.

"There is no gainsaying the fact that any political party that picks Oloyede as its 2027 gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State is destined to win by a huge landslide. Ditto for Pantami for Gombe State. The interesting side is that both are Islamic scholars, not ordinary Muslims. Lagos Muslims have their own gems. Give them equal opportunity as Ambode and Sanwo-Olu were given."

Renowned Muslim scholar, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al Sudais, for instance, is also being bashed online by some Muslims, including those who love his sonorous recitation of the Noble Qur’an, over his alleged disposition and attitude to the plight of Palestinians. A video of him praying Allah to grant Palestine victory during the taraweeh prayers on the 27th night of the just concluded month of Ramadan, however, came as a surprise to those who ignorantly felt that the respected scholar had been unacceptably silent, tagging him a “palace rat”. What they fail to understand is that even before and during Ramadan, Sheikh Sudais has always prayed for Palestine.

• Eid not supposed to be marked in isolation: Imam Nojeem Jimoh

During the celebration, especially in a state like Lagos and other parts of the country, while some Muslim families remain indoors after the Eid prayer, many spend the day at beaches, cinemas, parks, among other places of interest. But, The Companion, has over the years provided an alternative platform that allows families from various backgrounds to mingle, interact, share delicacies, play games together and generally catch fun on the eid day. What comes next after Ramadan?
🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦

The question is repeatedly being asked by people. This piece attempts to humbly fill the gap. To sustain the spirit of Ramadan throughout the year, a Muslim is encouraged to do the following meritorious deeds:

1. Maintain regular prayer and engage in spiritual reflection beyond Ramadan.
2. Make every day of your life psychologically akin to Ramadan.
3. Begin your six days of fasting called Sita Shawwal before your spiritual energy wanes.
4. Engage in acts of charity and kindness consistently.
5. Keep up with fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, as well as the 13th, 14th and 15th of every lunar month called Al-Ayyam al-Bid (white days) as recommended by the Prophet, peace be upon him.
6. Continuously seek knowledge and deepen understanding of the faith.
7. Strive to embody the values of patience, gratitude, and compassion in daily life.
8. Stay connected to the community and participate in Islamic events, Tafsir sessions, and knowledge-sharing gatherings.
9. Make sincere intentions to carry forward the positive habits cultivated during Ramadan.
10. Pray for steadfastness and firmness (Ath-Thabat).

Travails of Palestinians, complicit leaders and docile citizens: How Nigerian Muslims failed Gaza, By Rasheed Abubakar

The Nigerian Muslim community - the largest in Africa, is part of the Muslim world. Evidently, their advocacy on the plight of the Palestinians in the ongoing war has been generally poor. Apart from the Shiite group, Islamic Movement of Nigeria's solidarity rally for the Palestine in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, the last time a notable, strong awareness programme was organised for the Palestinian cause in Nigeria was between October and November, 2023, when the war was barely a month old. It was a collaborative effort between Muslim organisations as well as human and civil rights groups which culminated into a mega rally in Lagos and a press conference in Abuja and Ibadan, respectively. Muslim News Nigeria followed those events, and sadly, that was the last coordinated major awareness for the oppressed Palestinians from brethren in Nigeria in a six-month genocide that has continued, whereas some countries with their people - including non-Muslims, have sustained the protests, calling on their governments and world leaders to end the war and bring Israel to justice. By Rasheed Abubakar The travails of Palestinians in the hands of the murderous Israeli regime is once again at the front burner. Ramadan, perhaps, offered the platform for Muslims across the world …

UPDATE: Turkiye President Recep Toyyip Erdogan in a phone call personally offers his condolences to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh over for the deaths of his three children and three grandchildren in the Israeli attack. Erdogan told him that Israel will definitely be held accountable for the crimes against humanity it committed before the law.
