Pope Francis: Marriage is Between Man And Woman But Priests Can Bless Same-Sex Couples

“One should not prevent or prohibit the Church’s closeness to people in every situation in which they might seek God’s help through a simple blessing.”

Pope Francis has formally approved allowing priests to bless same-sex couples, with a new document released on Monday explaining a radical change in Vatican policy.

It insisted that people seeking God’s love and mercy shouldn’t be subject to “an exhaustive moral analysis” to receive it.

“One should not prevent or prohibit the Church’s closeness to people in every situation in which they might seek God’s help through a simple blessing,” the document from the Vatican’s doctrine office said.

However, the shift in policy doesn’t change the church’s position on marriage, CBS News reported.

The new document elaborated on a letter Francis sent to two conservative cardinals that was published in October. In that preliminary response, Francis suggested such blessings could be offered under some circumstances if they didn’t confuse the ritual with the sacrament of marriage.

The document repeated that rationale and elaborated on it, reaffirming that marriage is a lifelong sacrament between a man and a woman.

It stressed that blessings should not be conferred at the same time as a civil union or even with the clothing and gestures that belong in a wedding.

But it said requests for such blessings should not be denied full stop. It offered an extensive definition of the term “blessing” in Scripture to insist that people seeking a transcendent relationship with God and looking for his love and mercy should not be subject to “an exhaustive moral analysis” as a precondition for receiving it.

“Ultimately, a blessing offers people a means to increase their trust in God,” the document said. “The request for a blessing, thus, expresses and nurtures openness to the transcendence, mercy, and closeness to God in a thousand concrete circumstances of life, which is no small thing in the world in which we live.

“It is a seed of the Holy Spirit that must be nurtured, not hindered,” he added.

The Vatican holds that marriage is an indissoluble union between man and woman. As a result, it has long opposed same-sex marriage.

And in 2021, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said flat-out that the church couldn’t bless the unions of two men or two women because “God cannot bless sin.”

That document created an outcry, one it appeared even Francis was blindsided by even though he had technically approved its publication.

Soon after it was published, he removed the official responsible for it and set about laying the groundwork for a reversal.

In the new document, the Vatican said the church must shy away from “doctrinal or disciplinary schemes, especially when they lead to a narcissistic and authoritarian elitism whereby instead of evangelising, one analyses and classifies others, and instead of opening the door to grace, one exhausts his or her energies in inspecting and verifying.”

It stressed that people in “irregular” unions — gay or straight — are in a state of sin. But it said that if shouldn’t deprive them of God’s love or mercy.

“Thus, when people ask for a blessing, an exhaustive moral analysis should not be placed as a precondition for conferring it,” the document said.

The Rev. James Martin, who advocates for greater welcome for LGBTQ+ Catholics, praised the new document as a “huge step forward” and a “dramatic shift” from the Vatican’s 2021 policy, according to the report.

The new document “recognises the deep desire in many Catholic same-sex couples for God’s presence and help in their committed relationships,” he said in an email.

“Along with many Catholic priests, I will now be delighted to bless my friends in same-sex marriages,” he said.

Security: Modeme scores Chukwunwike’s administration high

*Commends Adigwe-led Support Group

The political leader of Ward 7, Hon. Joe Modeme, has scored the administration of Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwnwike, Chairman of Aniocha South LGA, very high in terms of efforts to enhance security in the council.

Speaking at his Asaba home when Team “Do It Again”, a support group led by Hon. Amaka Adigwe paid him a courtesy visit, the former Councilor and leader of Aniocha South LGA Legislative Arm, said the Chukwunwike-led council administration initiated the payment of stipends to officers of community vigilante groups to boost their morale.

“The chairman of the council has done well. We started the security revolution in Aniocha South but we were not paying but when he came on board, he started paying them (vigilante officers) to boost their morale.

Hon. Modeme who was joined by Chief Innocent Okofu, member Delta State House of Assembly Commission, also pointed out some projects executed by the Chukwunwike administration.

“There’s the renovation of ‘Garri House’ inside Nsukwa Market.

“Recently, the maternity house which Ada Anioma built during her tenure in the Delta State House of Assembly has been brought back to life by Chukwunwike."

Hon. Modeme also lauded the Vice Chairman of the Council, saying she has achieved a feat that politically most men could not within such a short time.

“Normally, there’s a saying that what a man can do, a woman can do better. Hon. Amaka is doing it (politics) better.

“She came into politics recently but from what she has been doing, she is doing very well. I encourage her to keep it up.”

He encouraged the team to keep up the grassroot visitation to get on-the-spot assessment of the Chairman’s administration before the election year.

Criminal elements among Fulanis should be fished out, says Chukwunwike after emergency meeting

Aniocha South Local Government Area on Wednesday held an emergency meeting with various stakeholders in the council with the aim to finding lasting solutions to issues of insecurity in Ubulu-Uku and other communities.

The major resolution adopted was the criminal elements among the local Fulani community should be identified and apprehended for the mutual co-existence that had always been the hallmark of relations among the various communities to be restored.

At the meeting were Police Divisional Officers, representatives of Department of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Roads Safety Corp, as well as Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corp. Traditional rulers, an Islamic leader popularly known as Imam and delegates from the Fulani and Hausa communities were also in attendance.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the closed door meeting, the council chairman said that it was aimed at charting the way forward.

His words: "I convened this emergency meeting for us to sit down and actually chart the way forward. We invited traditional rulers, security agencies, Fulani community and Hausa community so that we can come together and talk on the same table in respect of the unfortunate incident that happened on Monday.

"We do not want a repeat of it, so we called a meeting to know the remote cause of it and to nip it in the bud. It was a successful one, issues were discussed and a lot of findings too.

"By the grace of God, we believe that with this outcome, there won't be a repeat.", the council chairman declared, adding that "in Aniocha South, Ubulu-Uku in particular, everywhere is calm. We have known the Fulanis while growing up, we have always co-existed until recently when criminal elements infiltrated their camp but it is our primary responsibility to fish out those criminal elements".

Motorists diverted as reconstruction of failed portions of Ogwashi-Uku roads reaches Ogbe-Ogwudei

The reconstruction of failed portions of Ogwashi-Uku roads by the Hon. (Pastor) Jude Chukwunwike-led administration has reached Ogbe-Ogwudie axis as the council's Works Department continues with necessary efforts to ensure that the roads are motorable.

Having to dig six centimetres down for excavation: three of compromises laying of stones, the other three centimetres is for casting.

The Head of Department, Engineer (Mrs) Joan Oriahi, explained that such feat is to stabilise the road to the extent that it can withstand pressures from heavy duty vehicles.

As at the time of filing this report, the project team was still on site, vehicular movement is currently modified as motorists coming from Ubulu-Uku are being diverted to Ikelike quarters while those from Asaba will have to pass through Agidiesei junction.

Israel Adesanya defeats his long-time nemesis Alex Pereira

Adesanya suffered a controversial points loss to Pereira in their first fight, a kickboxing match. In their rematch, also in kickboxing, Adesanya was leading but was knocked out. In November 2022, in their first MMA clash, again Adesanya was ahead, but he was beaten in the final round.

On Sunday, on his fourth attempt, The Last Stylebender finally got his win over Pereira, and in stunning fashion.

At the end of the fight, Adesanya said he was “playing possum” against the fence, waiting for a moment to strike.

And when he struck, did he strike. It was a clean right hook from nowhere, and it stunned Pereira still. The next shot was another right hook to put down Pereira.

One hammer fist, and the fight was waved off, but Pereira was already out cold after the second hook.

German researchers say that brass used to make the famous Benin Bronzes in West Africa came from Germany's Rhineland region.

The 3,000 statues were stolen by British colonial officers during the invasion of the Kingdom of Benin (Nigeria today).

The bulk of the bronzes are still held in European and American museums. Several countries, including Germany and Scotland, have been in talks with Nigerian officials over the return of statues and other artifacts that once decorated the palace of the Oba, the ruler of Benin. Should the involved nations merely return the artifacts or should they also offer an apology for what they did?

The Rwandan government announced that imprisoned political activist Paul Rusesabagina, whose story inspired the Oscar-nominated film Hotel Rwanda, will be released from Kigali jail on Saturday.

Two years ago, he was sentenced to 25 years for terrorism in what his supporters called a sham trial. A government spokesperson said Rusesabagina's sentence had been "commuted by presidential order" after a request for clemency. Why do you think the Rwandan government chose to free Rusesabagina despite the charges it brought against him?

'It's My Turn Actually!' Tinubu Says In Acceptance Speech

"It's my turn actually!" An elated Bola Tinubu enthused an hour after he was declared the President-Elect of Nigeria by the Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) on Wednesday morning.
"I am profoundly humbled to serve as the 16th President of our beloved country. This is a shining moment in the life of any man and an affirmation of our democratic
existence," he added.

The former Lagos State Governor and presidential candidate of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) thanked all those who participated in the February 25 election with particular mention of ‘Articulated', 'Obidients', "Batified' and
'Kwankwasiyya' supporters.
"I take this opportunity to appeal to my fellow contestants to let us team up together. It is the only nation we have. It is one country and we must build together," he said.

Tinubu. 70, came out tops in 12 of Nigerias 36 states, and secured significant numbers in several other states to claim the highest number of votes 8,794,726, almost two million votes more than his closest rival former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Abubakar, 76, who has now run for
president six times, got 6,984,520 votes, while the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, who, in less than a year, galvanised young voters in a manner some have described as unprecedented finished the race with 6,101,533
Tinubus road to victory was far from being smooth. To earn his partys ticket for the race. he had to contend with heavyweights and partymen such as Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmad Lawan and former Transportation Minister. Rotimi Amaechi, among others to win his partys ticket.

Frustrated with the seeming lack of support from the President and reported opposition by key members of the Presidency, he would go on to make his now famous Emilokan (It is my turn) speech on June 2,
2022.
It is the turn of Yoruba, it is my turn, he said while addressing party delegates at the Government lodge in Abeokuta.

Remains of footballer Atsu found in Turkey quake rubble – Report

The body of former Ghana international Christian Atsu has been found after a huge earthquake in Turkey, local media reported Saturday, quoting his manager.

Atsu, 31, was caught up in a 7.8-magnitude quake that rocked Turkey and Syria on February 6, killing more than 43,000 people in both countries.

There were initial reports he had been rescued a day after the quake, but these turned out to be false.

His manager in Turkey, Murat Uzunmehmet, told DHA news agency on Saturday that his body had been found under the rubble in the Turkish southern province of Hatay.

“We have reached his lifeless body. His belongings are still being removed. His phone was also found,” Uzunmehmet told DHA.

Midfielder Atsu spent four seasons at Chelsea before a permanent transfer to Newcastle in 2017.
He signed in September for Turkish Super Lig side Hatayspor.

Search and rescue workers found Atsu’s body where he was staying at Ronesans Residence, a block of high-rise luxury flats that toppled over in Antakya city in Hatay.

Turkish police arrested the building’s contractor at Istanbul airport last week as he appeared to be heading to Montenegro, according to state news agency Anadolu.

*Sponsors 100 pupils for Primary Six exam in Aniocha-South L.G.A

The Vice Chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, Hon. Amaka Raechel Adigwe, today took her “Basic Education for All Outreach” to primary schools in the council.

The outreach was flagged off by sponsoring the registration of First School Leaving Certificate Examination (F.S.L.C.E) for 100 pupils drawn from over ten primary schools.

Hon. Adigwe, who graduated with a First Class in Information Technology from the prestigious Kwame Nkrumah University of Ghana 🇬🇭, took up the initiative after noting that most brilliant students especially the girl-child drop out of school due to lack of support and motivation during basic education.

Addressing journalists who accompanied her to cover the epoch making event, Hon. Adigwe said:

“I believe that students especially the girl-child will excel more if there is enough motivation during their foundational education.

“My journey towards academic success stems from the solid foundation I got from my primary school day."

She also took time to express her gratitude to her boss, the executive chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Area, Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike, for his continued support and guidance through her political journey.

Speaking to headmasters and headmistresses of the various schools she visited, the Vice Chairman hinted that the programme which benefited 100 pupils is just a pilot scheme and will be replicated in secondary and tertiary institutions with time.

The beneficiaries include pupils from Umomi Primary School, Ewulu; Isikiti Primary School, Isheagu; Mgbalamgba Primary School, Isheagu and Enede Primary School, Nsukwa.

Others are Obiezeamaka Primary School, Nsukwa; Ekelieke Primary School Ashama; Aniga Primary School, Adonte; Igwe Primary School, Ukwu-Oba, Ulogwe Primary School, Umute, ILLOH Primary School, Egbudu Akah, Ejeme Aniogor Primary School, Ejeme Unor Primary School and Dugbo Primary School Obidugbo.
