"John" Monday Onyeme ,
The Deputy Governor,
Delta State,

Dear Sir,

Re: Light Up Ndokwa Nation Protest

We appreciate your interest in the ongoing Light Up Ndokwa Nation protest. However, we wish to clarify and correct your negative narrative that seems to be emerging from your deliberate act to label Ndokwa Nation as bad debtors to BEDC. Reconnecting us to BEDC is not the solution Ndokwa Nation is seeking with the proposed June 16 (tomorrow's) peaceful protest.

The crux of tomorrow's peaceful protest is centered on being connected to the Okpai Independent Power Plant (IPP), which is located in our backyard. It's ironic that the Okpai IPP, which has increased electric power production in Nigeria by 15 percent, has not benefited its host nation, Ndokwa Nation. The plant, which was commissioned on April 1, 2005, and began commercial operation seven months later, consists of an integrated combined cycle electric power generation plant producing 480 MW of electricity. Yet, we are still wallowing in abject darkness.

The Okpai project includes an overhead 130kv transmission line that crosses the River Niger to connect the plant to the national grid at Obosi/Onitsha in Anambra State and subsequently serving other parts of the Nation. Meanwhile, Ndokwa Nation, the host nation, is denied access to this electricity. As the saying goes, "when the roof is leaking, you don't start by patching the wall." We need to address the fundamental issue of electricity generation in our community before first serving others.

We find it perplexing that you are trying to divert attention by saying you are working to reconnect some parts of Ndokwa Nation to BEDC, whereas our main call is for Ndokwa Nation to be connected to the Okpai IPP. The fish does not ask for water from the river that is its own home. We are not asking for charity, but for what is rightfully ours.

It's quite shameful that as a supposed Ndokwa man, you're calling fellow indigenes seeking the betterment of Ndokwa

Information gathered from the public indicates that some of our Ndokwa brothers and leaders, who are attempting to halt the upcoming protest, have held various positions in government. Yet, despite their access to power, they have never leveraged their offices to advocate for the rights and needs of their people in the Ndokwa Nation, particularly concerning the issue of stepping down the Independent Power Plant (IPP) lights in our communities.

Reports also reveal that the current electricity being enjoyed in areas like Aboh, Okapi, Beneku, and Abalagada is largely the result of the struggles and efforts of a few dedicated individuals. This raises important questions about the accountability of our leaders and the sincerity of their commitment to the well-being of the Ndokwa people.

It is imperative for our people to reflect on these disparities and ensure that our leaders prioritize the needs of the people they represent. The call for justice and equitable access to resources must be at the forefront as we prepare for this crucial protest.

It is evident that those who hold positions of authority or reside in the corridors of power are often disconnected from the struggles of the common people. Our pressing question now is whether these individuals are afraid that the youth and ordinary citizens are taking the initiative to do what they either could not accomplish or failed to pursue. What exactly are their motivations for opposing this movement?

The answers to these questions are as unclear to us as they are to everyone else.

The protest we are organizing is not merely a call for change; it is a divine mandate from God Almighty for the federal government to truly hear and respond to the cries of the Ndokwa Nation. We urge everyone to recognize the significance of this movement and refrain from being used as tools to suppress it.

Let us stand united in our quest for justice, equitable representation, and the rightful access to resources in our communities.

Ndokwa ethnic youths have united to voice their concerns about the lack of electricity in the region, despite the fact that their area generates and supplies power to over nine states in the federation through power plants in Obosi, Asaba, Benin, Abuja, and others. Shockingly, they have been without reliable electricity for more than 15 years.

As preparations intensify for the peaceful protest scheduled for June 16 against the federal government, aimed at demanding the step down of the Independent Power Plant in their homeland ( Ndokwa Nation ), the urgency of their call for justice and equity in electricity supply becomes even more apparent. The youth are determined to stand together, ready to advocate for their rightful access to the resources that their region has contributed to the nation.

But it seems that the state government and its allies are working tirelessly to intimidate, threaten, and undermine the youths. However, one question lingers on everyone's lips: Will the electricity be stepped down only in the homes and communities of the protesters, or including the homes and communities of their politicians?

The answer to this question is as clear as the day. It raises serious concerns about fairness and equity in how resources are distributed. The disparity between those fighting for their rights and those in positions of power can no longer be ignored.

We encourage the Government of Delta and everyone to share their thoughts and ideas on this pressing issue. It's crucial that we come together to address the inequalities that exist in our communities and ensure that the voices of all citizens are heard. Let's unite to advocate for a solution that benefits everyone, not just a select few.
