Dear LMN,

My husband complains about everything he is paying for, and I mean every single thing including toilet paper, electricity, food, etc. He complains that I am using supplies too much, and I promise you, I do not in anyway consume much of anything. If I ask him for money to make a pot of soup, he starts to complain, asking questions as to how the previous pot got finished. In my head I'd be like "Oga, no be me and you chop am?" 🤷

I feel so uncomfortable using supplies or eating foods in the house, let alone asking him for money to stock up the kitchen. He makes me feel as though I was a homeless beggar whom he picked up from the streets and sheltered, hence I'm at his mercy.

Is this how other men treat their wives or is it just mine? Now I want to get a job so that I can fend for myself without having to ask him for anything. Na wa o.

Dear LMN,

Three months after our wedding, my husband vanished—just like that. No calls, no messages, nothing. At first, I thought something terrible had happened to him. But then the calls started coming in. His clients, his business associates, even some of my own colleagues… all demanding money. That’s when it hit me: my husband was in serious debt. He had borrowed from everyone around him, even went behind my back to ask my own colleagues for loans.

Now, I’m the one left to face the consequences, with calls coming in day and night, people threatening and demanding answers I don’t have. I don’t know where he is or if he ever plans to return, but each ring of my phone is a reminder of the mess he left me in. Should I also run away?

Dear LMN,

I have been in a serious relationship now for two and half years. He beats me sometimes and insults me a lot. Whenever he is angry, he calls me worthless, that nobody can ever love me, and I am lucky he is even considering marrying me. He will tell me to go outside and see whether the grass is greener there, that if I go, he will never take me back.

Let me explain. I am 23 years old, and I am HIV positive. I take my medicine very religiously so I am okay, but even though I think I'm a fine girl, this is my first relationship. He is very aware of my status and when he is angry, he uses it to insult me and my mother. But apart from those times, he is usually loving.

Two weeks ago, he beat me so badly in my mother's house. No one was around, he accused me of receiving a birthday gift from another man, he said the man wants to sleep with me. As he was beating me, he was asking if I had told the guy I am HIV positive. I tried to explain that I and the guy are in the same unit in church, that's why he gave me a gift.

He still beat me till my head was bleeding. He has asked for forgiveness three times now, and I don't know what to do. I'm scared that if I leave the relationship, nobody else will date me again. It's not easy to tell anybody I'm HIV positive, so I feel like I'm safer with him than out there with no one. Does this mean I have low self esteem?

Please I need advice and assurance. Thank you.

Dear LMN,

I just got offered my dream job in another city, but now my head is scattered. My husband is here, and he’s not keen on relocating at all. I’ve worked so hard to reach this point in my career, but now I’m torn between chasing my dreams and staying with the person I love.

He says he’ll support me, but I can tell he’s not happy about the idea of me moving. I don’t even know what to do. Do I go after my career and risk our marriage, or do I stay and maybe regret not taking this chance? This thing is not easy at all.

Dear LMN,

What is wrong with a married couple taking their time before having children?

Ever since my husband and I got married, both our families won’t let us rest. Anytime they see us, it’s the same question: “When are you giving us grandkids na?” It’s not like we don’t want children o; we’re just not ready yet, especially because of the economic hardship, and we’d like to enjoy this phase before jumping into parenthood.

The pressure is sha real and they're making us feel as if we're not doing what is right. What do you people think?

Abeg, I need advice. I’m 19 years old, and my family is pressuring me to go to university, but honestly, I don’t want to go. I’ve been dating an older man who’s 35, and we’re in love. He’s stable and supports me. He even said I don’t need to go to school if I don’t want to.

The problem now is my parents. They don’t know about him yet, and I’m afraid they won’t accept my decision. They’ve always wanted me to focus on my education and get a degree first, but marriage is what I want right now.

Is it wrong to follow my heart and marry him instead of going to university? How do I even tell my parents?

Fact: You absolutely CAN'T! HIV doesn’t show up in someone's physical appearance. The only way to know is through testing!

Don’t let assumptions put you or others at risk. Protect yourself by getting tested regularly and encourage your partner to do the same. Spread the word !
